Chapter 116
His promise.
Megan’s POV:
“What have you found out?” I ask her, my mind racing with questions.
Jane hesitates as she glanced around the room nervously.
“I did some digging before coming here, but I need to be careful. I do not want to tip off the police or whoever is behind this.” Jane revealed as she whispered silently.
I lean in, my heart pounding.
“What do you know, Jane? Please, you have to tell me.” I asked her.
Jane takes a deep breath, her voice barely above a whisper.
“I think it’s connected to Hailey. I think she is involved in this somehow.” Jane said as I was taken aback.
My eyes widen in shock.
“Hailey? Involved in Kayla’s murder?” I asked her.
“But she has been missing for some time now!” I told her.
“I guess they have been preparing for this behind the scenes!” Jane said.
“And with that, our visitation time is up,” I say, standing up from my chair.
But before I can leave, the guard speaks up. “Actually, Megan, you’ve got another visitor. You’ll need to stay here for a bit longer.”
I raise an eyebrow, surprised. “Who is it?” I ask, curiosity piqued.
“And with that, our visitation time is up,” I say, standing up from my chair.
But before I can leave, the guard speaks up.
“Actually, Megan, you have got another visitor. You will need to stay here for a bit longer.” She said.
I raise an eyebrow, surprised.
“Who is it?” I ask, curiosity piqued.
The guard checks her clipboard.
“Says here it is a… Miles?” She said.
My face lights up with a smile. Miles! My heart skips a beat as I feel a rush of happiness.
I had not expected to see him here, but I’m so glad he has come to visit me.
“That is great!” I exclaim, my spirits lifting.
“I would love to see him.” I said.
The guard nods and leads me back to the visitation room.
I take a deep breath, feeling a sense of calmness.
Miles is here, and everything is going to be okay.
As I enter the room, I see Miles waiting for me, a warm smile on his face. We embrace, and I feel a sense of comfort and security in his arms.
“Hey, Megan,” he says, his voice soft.
“I have been worried sick about you.” He told me.
I pull back, looking up at him. “I’m so glad you’re here,” I say, my voice filled with emotion.
“I really need your support right now.” I told him.
Miles smiles and takes my hand in his.
“Don’t even worry about that, Megan,” he says.
“You have got my support, no matter what. You don’t even have to ask.” Miles said.
I feel a lump form in my throat as I look at him, his eyes filled with kindness and concern.
“Thanks, Miles,” I say, my voice barely above a whisper.
“That means a lot to me.” I added.
Miles squeezes my hand.
“We’ll get through this together, okay? We’ll figure out what’s going on and we’ll clear your name.” He told me.
I nod, feeling a sense of gratitude towards him.
“Okay,” I answered, smiling slightly.
“I know we will.” He said
We sit down, and Miles asks me about my situation, listening intently as I fill him in on all the details. I can tell he is trying to process everything, trying to make sense of it all.
As we talk, Miles pulls out a piece of paper from his pocket and hands it to me.
“I have been working on getting your bail processed,” he replied.
“I think I can help you get out of here sooner rather than later.” Miles said.
My eyes widen in surprise as I take the paper from him.
“Really?” I ask, my heart racing with excitement.
Miles nods.
“Yeah. I have been talking to a lawyer and we think we can get you out on bail pretty quickly. We just need to finalize a few things.” He said.
I feel a wave of relief wash over me as I look at the paper, my mind racing with the possibilities.
“Freedom. It’s within reach.” I said smiling staring into space.
“Thank you, Miles,” I say, my voice filled with gratitude.
“Thank you so much.” I added.
Miles smiles and puts a hand on my shoulder.
“Do not thank me yet,” he says.
“We still have to get you out of here. But we will get it done, I promise.” Miles said smiling.
Just as Miles handed me the paper, Detective James bursts into the visitation room, a look of anger on his face.
“What’s going on here?” he demands with his eyes fixed on Miles.
Miles stands up, a calm look on his face.
“Just trying to Megan, Detective,” he says.
But Detective James is having none of it.
“I know what you’re trying to do, Miles,” he says, his voice low and menacing.
“You are trying to interfere with a criminal investigation. And I won’t let you do it.”
I feel a surge of fear as the detective’s eyes narrow.
“What are you talking about?” I ask, trying to stay calm.
Detective James turns to me. “You are not going anywhere, Megan. You are going to stay right here until we figure out what’s going on. And Miles here is going to stay out of it.” He said to my face.
Miles takes a step forward.
“I am just trying to help,” he told the detective.
“I’m not trying to interfere with anything.” He replied.
But Detective James is unmoved by all he is saying.
“I don’t care what you’re trying to do,” he says.
“You’re not going to mess with this investigation. Now, leave. Before I arrest you for obstruction of justice.” He ordered him.
I sit in stunned silence, my eyes wide with shock. I can’t believe the detective’s outburst. Miles takes a step back, his face calm, but his eyes flashing with anger.
“Detective, I understand that you’re trying to do your job, but there is no need to be hostile,” Miles said.
But Detective James is beyond reason.
“Hostile?” he repeats as his voice rises.
“You have no idea what’s at stake here. You’re just a meddling amateur who thinks he can swoop in and save the day. Well, let me tell you something, Miles. You’re not a hero. You’re just a nuisance.” He spat.
I feel a surge of fear as the detective’s words hang in the air. I’ve never seen him like this before. He’s always been stern, but this is something different. This is personal.
“Miles, I think you should go,” I say, my voice barely above a whisper.
Miles nods, his eyes never leaving the detective’s face.
“Yeah. I think you’re right.” He agreed.
“But I will make sure you get out of here soon!” Miles said and left.
