MALIA’S POV
After skimming through the pages of about five books, we were able to learn a few things about the witches of the Alfea tribe.
Like Alice had told us, there could only be one Alfea witch in a lineage and I was the chosen one in mine.
The age at which the witch may discover her powers is different for everyone. But this discovery would be at a period in her life when she was going to need it.
We were the most powerful of all the witches and were never supposed to act in rage because it could lead to the loss of many lives.
Penelope and I had read open-mouthed, the story of an Alfea witch who had set a whole village on fire with her mind just because she had thought the King had something to do with the death of her only child. But she found out at the end of the day that her child had been killed by her best friend.
“Well, now we have to get you to an anger management class,” Penelope said.
I rolled my eyes. “I do not need it. I know how to control my emotions,” I replied.
She snorted. “But from what you told me happened between you and the Alpha the other night, I have to disagree with you.”
I sighed. “That wasn’t my fault. My wolf took over because Ryder was being so mean. I do not have anger issues.”
She gave me a sweet smile. “Okay dearest friend, let’s see how your powers work. Try to move this book with your mind.”
I arched an eyebrow at her. “I don’t think I can. I’m not sure it just works like that.”
“Can you at least give it a try?” she pressed.
I sighed. “Okay. Fine. Here goes nothing,” I murmured and focused on the book.
I didn’t know exactly what I was supposed to do. I willed the book to move with my mind but nothing happened.
I gave up after a few minutes. “This is ridiculous,” I said.
“Let’s just try again,” she urged.
I shook my head. “I am not doing this anymore. Maybe Alice was mistaken. I can’t be a witch.”
She rolled her eyes. “You know she was right. Your hair is a proof.”
“Well, I am tired and hungry. I’m not going to bother myself with trying to use my non-existent powers. I didn’t use my mind or anything to cause the colour change of my hair. Maybe the Moon Goddess is just messing with me.”
“Don’t speak of the Moon Goddess like that. You know she doesn’t play games,” she scolded.
“Whatever,” I said, getting up from my seat. “Let’s put these back on the shelf and get the hell out of here.”
We returned to my room and promptly rang the kitchen to bring our meals.
“Do you know that the Alpha sneaks out of this palace every night?” Penelope queried.
We were already halfway through our food and I had been thinking about requesting more.
I set my fork down on my plate and finished chewing what was in my mouth before replying.
“I have heard him going out of his chambers a couple of times at night. But I had always assumed that he was going to his study to work on something.”
“Well, perhaps he is working on something but I am very sure that it is not within the palace. I have seen him through my window going towards the direction of the forest,” she said.
I shrugged. “Maybe he had been going for runs.”
She rolled her eyes. “In the dead of the night?” she wondered. “Don’t you find it strange?”
I gave her a look. Truthfully, I found it a little strange but I had other things to worry about besides my husband sneaking out of the palace at night.
“What I find strange is you looking out your window in the dead of the night when you are supposed to be sleeping,” I replied and became suspicious at how she suddenly wouldn’t meet my eyes.
“Penelope, is there something going on that I should know?” I queried.
“No, there isn’t,” she replied and focused on her meal.
I stared at her for a while until it was clear that she wasn’t going to tell me whatever it was that was going on with her. I thought we were best friends and were supposed to tell each other everything.
I decided not to press her further and also continued with my meal.
I went to Ryder’s chambers that evening to see if he had forgiven me for something that was totally his fault.
He was neither in the living room nor the dining room but I knew he was in his chambers. I mentally groaned. I didn’t want to go into that bedroom.
I inhaled deeply and with determination, opened the room door without knocking.
He grinned immediately when he saw me. “Just the person I wanted to see.”
I mentally rolled my eyes. “If you wanted to see me why didn’t you just come to my room?” I asked.
“I guess it’s because I wanted you to come to me instead,” he replied.
“Well, here I am,” I said, moving closer to him. “Are you still mad at me?” I had to know.
His eyes danced with mischief. “Just come a little closer and I’ll let you know,” he replied.
I suddenly felt nauseous. The thought of him touching my body didn’t appeal to me anymore. My wolf was really standing on business.
I joined him on the bed anyway. After all, he was my husband.
His arms went around my waist and I tried not to stiffen. I wondered how I was going to go through the next hour without throwing up or pushing him away. He clearly wanted sex and unfortunately for me, I didn’t feel desire for him. My wolf’s doing, I was very certain.
I was going to have to fake my moans and orgasm this time.
When he slid inside me, I felt he was a stranger. I had lost all emotional connection to him overnight and at that moment, I feared having a baby with this man.
As he moved rhythmically in and out of me, I pictured Zade’s face. It was the only way I was able to get wet enough for my husband to be convinced that I was enjoying it.
After what felt like an eternity, he climaxed and nearly let out a sigh of relief. I hoped whatever it was that had been preventing me from conceiving also worked that night. I couldn’t get pregnant for a man I didn’t feel connected to. He rolled off me and I resisted the urge to rush into the bathroom to take a bath.
“I would have asked you to spend the night with me but I’m not sure you’d want to. You know we are still trying to fix this monster that has somehow reared its ugly head between us,” he murmured.
I absolutely didn’t want to spend any extra minute on the same bed with him so I didn’t say anything to make him think otherwise.
“I should leave now,” I said, sitting upright. “I am already starting to feel sleepy.”
I couldn’t help but notice the look of relief on his face and I wondered if there was no other reason he had asked us to be in different chambers.
That night, I heard him leave his room again and this time, I followed. I tried to be as discreet as I could.
As Penelope had said, he made his way out of the palace and headed towards the direction of the forest.
He walked deeper into the forest with determined steps and my curiosity grew when he didn’t change into his wolf form.
He took a secret path that I had never noticed in all the time I had gone for a run in the forest.
The path suddenly opened into a clearing that contained a house that looked abandoned. It was dark except for a dim light that I could see through one of its windows.
I crouched in the shadows to avoid notice and waited until he opened the door and let himself in.
My first thought was that he was keeping a mistress because he needed a child.
But that didn’t explain sneaking out of the palace at night and coming to a house that looked haunted.
He could easily meet with his mistress during the day and I wouldn’t find out. After all, he sometimes had to leave the pack for meetings. He could easily use that as an opportunity.
This was something deeper, I could tell.
I took a deep breath and made my way quietly to the door.
I froze in shock when I heard a voice I would be able to identify at any time.
Victoria.
What the hell was she doing here and why was Ryder meeting her?
“When are we going to stop meeting like this?” she queried. “And when are we going to get our son from Zade?”
“I should have just tried to get him from the palace when I escaped from the prison that that son of a bitch had locked me in but I wasn’t even sure of where I was headed yet.”
I slapped a hand over my mouth to stifle a gasp. To say I was shocked was an understatement.
“Don’t worry, Love. This will all be over soon. We will be reunited with our son and destroy Zade. He’s already halfway gone as it stands. If I had known that he would have fallen for your lies so easily, I would have asked you to do that a long time ago. His pack will be ours soon and you’ll rule beside me as my Luna,” Ryder said.
It was when I started to taste the salt of my tears that I realized I was crying.
I heard her scoff. “For a while, I thought you had fallen for that wench. You have no idea how mad I was when I heard you had made her Luna.”
Ryder chuckled. “She is just too easy to deceive. But I guess she trusted me more because I saved her from those rogues that you sent after her. You and your sister are really Masters of the game.” I made her Luna because my pack members were already clamouring for a Luna and there was no way I was going to crown Lila as Luna even if it was for a short period. I totally despised that one.”
I backed away from the door in shock and anger as my brain tried to process all that I had heard.
Because I wasn’t paying attention, I tripped over a log of wood and let out a yelp of surprise.
It all suddenly became too quiet. With my heart pounding in my ears, I quickly got up and started to run.
I heard the door open and Ryder called my name as he came after me in hot pursuit. For the first time in a long while, I feared for my life. Had he really been pretending to love me or was he just using Victoria to get what he wanted?
I ran as fast as I could. I had to get to Zade. He had to know.
I was nearly at the entrance of the forest when I couldn’t feel my legs anymore. I instantly fell to the ground. I tried to crawl my way out and immediately also lost the ability to use my arms.
I just lay helplessly on the ground and prayed to the Moon Goddess for help.
Victoria and Ryder got to where I was lying and I gasped in shock as I saw that the whites in Victoria’s eyes had disappeared and it was all pitch black.
I quickly deduced that she was also a witch, thanks to those books that Penelope and I had gone through at the library the other day. And that was how she had been able to paralyze me.
“What happened to her hair?” She asked Ryder.
He sneered at me. “She said she felt like doing something new with her hair and then went on to do this rubbish,” he answered.
She scoffed. “Just carry her and let’s return to the house,” she said.
Ryder bent to lift me off the ground into his arms and I nearly threw up in irritation.
How had I not seen through this deceit? Was I really too trusting?
I couldn’t believe that I had actually loved him and given him my body without second thoughts.
It suddenly occurred to me that he might have actually been the one preventing me from conceiving somehow, and had decided to lay the blame on me just to mess with my mind and make me feel miserable.
I swore that if I somehow managed to get out of the situation, I was really going to enjoy killing both him and Victoria. They could continue their love in hell.
We arrived at the house and I watched in anger as Victoria used her magic to bind me with supernatural chains.
“Is that really necessary?” Ryder queried. “She is already paralyzed.”
“The paralysis is temporary but these chains are not. They will remain on her until I decide to take them off,” she replied.
“Why are you doing this?” I asked.
She squatted before me and gave me a sweet smile.
“You are not the problem, Malia. Your situation is just a case of bad luck. It is Zade that we are after, but unfortunately for you, you are his mate and we can easily use you to get to him.”
“Ryder,” I whispered and he gave a harsh laugh.
“It was so easy to make you fall in love with me. I enjoyed every bit of it,” he said.
“If you really did not love me then why did you help me get my wolf back? Why did you ask the witch to put a cloaking spell on me?” I queried.
It was Victoria who answered for him.
“Let’s just call it some sort of compensation for your troubles, because it is actually not your fault that all of this is happening. When all of this is over, you’re going to serve us as one of our servants. And we might even make you the head of the servants if you prove to be loyal to us.”
She tucked a lock of my hair behind one ear and straightened. “And as for the cloaking spell, I just didn’t want Zade to find you sooner than he was supposed to. I didn’t want any part of the plan to be ruined because of that damn mate bond.”
I smiled bitterly. “So what’s the next step in your so-called plans?” I asked.
She grinned. “It wasn’t really part of the plan for you to discover us in the forest but I’m kinda glad that you did. It makes things a lot more easy,” she replied and then turned to face Ryder.
“We are going to use her as bait and I’m very sure that Zade is going to bite.”
He smiled a sinister smile. ” I’m going to have him destroyed at last.”
