Chapter 948: Awake

Wesley rarely lectured Henry.
“Alright, I get it. I was speaking with my back turned, not directly to the boss.”
“Now, think about what to say when Winifred Dawson wakes up. We don’t know if she was fully unconscious at the time. If she remembers anything, it could be bad news given her hatred for the boss…” Henry mumbled. “The boss’s name stands for caution and prudence, and he usually lives up to it. But when Winifred Dawson is involved, he loses his mind. I thought he’d learned his lesson this time, but as soon as he heard something happened to her, he rushed over without hesitation, even wearing a mask. If Liam Burkhart recognizes him, it’ll be a huge problem.”
Wesley didn’t show much reaction outwardly, but he agreed with Henry internally. In his view, Leland Burns was destined for great things and shouldn’t be held back by romantic entanglements. If he needed a woman, it should be someone obedient who wouldn’t hinder his career.
Look at what Winifred Dawson had done. Despite everything, Leland Burns couldn’t let her go. A man usually so cold-hearted seemed bewitched when it came to her.
“Liam Burkhart probably already knows it’s Mr. Burns.”
“So what if he does?” Leland Burns was highly capable. Did Winifred Dawson really think she could bring him down? She should think twice.
If it wasn’t voluntary, Winifred Dawson couldn’t touch a hair on him. But she was smart in some ways; if she truly liked Leland Burns and they were together, they’d be quite a match.
Henry said, “He has no evidence. The boss must have had the club people erase any information. Someone like Liam Burkhart won’t find anything.”
With nothing to do in the hospital room and tired of standing, Henry pulled two chairs by the window and sat down to chat. Usually, Henry talked while Wesley listened.
Henry sprawled lazily in his chair with his long legs stretched out. His hair had grown longer and naturally curly, making his head look fluffy and soft to the touch.
“When the boss kicked him, I felt it too. Did you hear that crisp sound?”
Wesley nodded.
“He’s probably ruined now, a eunuch. Liam Burkhart was such a womanizer; it’s good he’s been cut off. Winifred Dawson is funny-smart enough to fool the boss but dumb enough to trust Liam Burkhart. And Liam Burkhart dared to mess with the boss’s woman; he’s lucky he wasn’t killed.”
Henry rambled on endlessly, and only Wesley could tolerate him at times like this. Wesley would listen quietly and even fetch him hot water when he got thirsty from talking too much. If Henry got too loud, Wesley would remind him to keep his voice down so Winifred Dawson wouldn’t hear.
“What’s there to worry about? She’s still unconscious,” Henry said, stretching his neck to look over at Winifred Dawson, who was still asleep with a troubled expression on her face.
With Mrs. Protich taking care of her meticulously, there was no need to worry about Winifred Dawson’s condition.
“Sigh…” Henry inexplicably sighed.
Wesley asked with concern, “What’s wrong?”
“I’m just upset that the boss’s first child is gone like this. Winifred Dawson came to the hospital wanting an abortion; just thinking about it makes me angry.”
Wesley found Henry’s dog-like grimace amusing: “Why are you angry? It’s not your business.”
“How is it not? The boss’s business is my business. If it weren’t for him helping us back then, who knows where we’d be suffering now? Luckily nothing happened this time; otherwise, that child would be his heir and should be kept alive no matter what.”
Wesley didn’t like hearing Henry talk about this and frowned.
Seeing Wesley’s displeasure, Henry stopped talking.
“Don’t overthink it; the boss is fine and will have more children in the future. They don’t necessarily have to be from Winifred Dawson.”
“True…” Henry quickly accepted this logic. The room was too quiet and boring; without fresh air or anything to do, even his brain felt numb.
Henry stared outside and gradually grew sleepy and irritable. He stood up and called Wesley: “Let’s go outside for a smoke.”
“You go ahead; I’ll stay here and watch her.”
Henry pulled at his arm: “It’s no fun smoking alone. We’ve been sitting here all day; let’s go get some fresh air and have dinner.”
“Don’t forget…” Wesley lowered his voice, “Mr. Burns ordered us to stay until Winifred Dawson wakes up and ensure she’s safe before leaving.”
“The surgery went well; she’s fine now. Look at those monitors-they show she’s stable…”
Their conversation was overheard by Mrs. Protich: “Wesley, Henry, you can go eat or take a walk if you want. You’ve been here all day; I’ll watch over her and call you if anything happens.”
Henry pulled Wesley up from his chair: “Come on, didn’t you hear Mrs. Protich? We’ve been here long enough; let’s go eat something and have a smoke.”
Wesley had no choice but to follow Henry’s lead most of the time since he valued their friendship deeply.
Just as they were about to leave, Winifred Dawson opened her eyes.
“Miss Dawson, you’re awake?” Mrs. Protich had been watching closely and couldn’t believe her eyes when she saw Winifred wake up.
Winifred was awake but still dazed as if trapped in a whirlpool unable to focus her mind.
