the nurse

A man emerged from the group and stood in front of us. “Who let you in?” he asked, frowning with annoyance.
I glanced at the nurse, who remained silent, her forehead slightly creased as she stared at the man who had spoken. My own brow furrowed as I looked back at him. “Who are you?” I asked.
Some of the men smirked at my question. The man in the center, whom I assumed was their leader, was the first to step closer to us.
The two security guards quickly stepped forward to stand in front of me. One of them was about to call for backup when the newcomer leader suddenly grabbed him by the collar.
The man was dressed in a luxurious tuxedo, typical attire for private security, and he moved with impressive speed. Dad’s man stood no chance against him; he was easily overpowered.
I pursed my lips and looked at the nurse beside me. “Well, why don’t you explain to them?” I said.
The nurse’s forehead creased even more at my words, and I restrained myself from scoffing at her. Wasn’t she supposed to explain to the newcomer? She had been confident earlier when she led me into that hall of frames. Now she was quiet when caught? Uh-huh. People like her weren’t trustworthy, plus they were cowards.
I crossed my arms. I gave the leader a sharp look. He stood a few meters away, speaking on his phone while keeping an eye on all of us. I rolled my eyes in annoyance.
I was about to speak when the nurse beat me to it. “Stay back. We’re not here to steal anything.”
The leader looked at her, furrowing his brow when he saw her. Shortly after, he lowered his phone and scowled at the nurse. “Who are you?”
The nurse pressed her lips together. She pulled something out of her pocket and stepped towards the newcomer leader. His companions tensed, aiming their guns at her. I saw laser sights trained on her forehead. My breath caught at the sight-any pull of the trigger and the nurse would be gone. I swallowed hard where I stood.
Who were these men?
The nurse stopped in front of the leader and pulled out a card from her pocket. I assumed it was an ID card, and I was likely right, judging by the way the man scrutinized it with a furrowed brow.
“Stay back,” the nurse ordered again.
The man stared into the nurse’s eyes. They held their gaze for a few moments before the leader signaled to his men. His companions lowered their guns, and I breathed a sigh of relief.
I glanced at the man, and he was already assessing me. The nurse must have said something to him because he stepped closer to me. My other security guard, who hadn’t been roughed up earlier, was on alert and quickly stood in front of me.
“Stay away from the VIP,” my security warned. “Her safety is my top priority.”
I smirked at Dad’s security’s remark. Well, at least someone knew how to stand tall without shaking.
The newcomer leader stopped advancing. The two men locked eyes, and my muscles tensed as the leader suddenly lunged forward. He punched the security guard in front of me, nearly involving me in the scuffle as the guard stumbled back. Fortunately, he managed to stay on his feet, preventing me from getting caught behind him.
I quickly sidestepped and watched as the two men exchanged blows in the middle. There was no indication that the leader’s companion would step in to help, so I breathed a little easier. That security guard was my last defense against whatever the man intended to do to me.
The first security guard didn’t call for backup, and the other was too busy throwing punches. I didn’t have a phone, so I couldn’t call Dad for help.
The fight needed to stop so I could get back to my room, but it looked like the show between the two would last a while. I scanned the area. Camera. I glanced over at the corner of the hall and smiled when I spotted a CCTV camera focused on the angle where the two men were fighting.
Hopefully, someone would see the commotion and intervene before Dad and the De Lapaz family found out. If they learned I had gone to the hall of frames and caused trouble, Dad’s name would surely be dragged into it.
“Hey,” I called out to the two.
I gasped when the leader was knocked down first. The man quickly threw punches at the security guard while the latter lay on the floor. The leader only managed to avoid the security’s blows. I glanced at his companion. None of them even wanted to stop the fight. I also noticed that they weren’t even looking at each other directly, as if they were robots on the side waiting for orders.
Awful. I remember now that in their industry, they can’t take a move without orders.
I looked at the nurse. Her forehead was furrowed as she watched the two men. I huffed. “Hey you!” I called out to her.
She looked at me. “Miss?” she asked sharply, but I ignored the tone of her words.
“Stop them,” I ordered and shrugged. “You don’t want them to die here inside the hall of frames, right?”
The nurse’s face twisted. It was as if she was pondering what I said, and seemed hesitant about whether to intervene or not. I scoffed again. “Come on, stop them!” I said, a hint of annoyance in my voice.
I didn’t want to play hero and break up a fight between two fierce lions. I had just recovered from Simmy’s poisoning, and I knew I was too weak to intervene. The leader’s subordinates wouldn’t take action without their leader’s command, but the leader was too busy grappling. The only option left was the nurse.
