“Do I really need to leave?” he asked.
I looked at him. He was staring back at me. I shrugged and glanced down at my plate. “Yes, you should,” I replied.
He grunted in response. I blinked, surprised. “What was that?” I asked.
He shook his head and looked away. “I’m not leaving.”
“Come on.” I set my spoon and fork down. “You have to go,” I said, raising an eyebrow at him.
He snorted and leaned back in his chair. “No. I’m not leaving.”
“Stubborn,” I muttered, irritation creeping into my voice. “You will leave whether you like it or not.” I narrowed my eyes at him.
He squinted back at me. We glared at each other, but he was the first to break eye contact. He looked down at his plate and then glanced up at me again. “I’ll go with you.”
My lips pressed into a thin line. “Anya and I planned this for days, don’t ruin this opportunity!”
“It’s not my fault. You didn’t ask if I wanted to leave.”
“Come on, Japen!” I exclaimed in annoyance. “Just leave!”
“I’m not leaving unless I’m with you, Azora!” He took a deep breath and gazed at me. “I’ve been away from you for years, wanting to stay by your side, but I couldn’t fight them off. Now I can, so I won’t give up on you, Azora.”
I shook my head. “You can’t be serious. How will you stand up to Dad?” I clenched my fist. “You don’t know him, Japen. You don’t know who you’re dealing with!”
“I’m not afraid of your father.”
I bit my lip, my heart racing at his words. I stood up and shook his shoulders. He grabbed my hands to stop me. I took a deep breath as he stared at me, then withdrew my hands. “You’re leaving tonight,” I said, turning away from him.
I looked up at the ceiling and then sat back down, but an arm snaked around my waist and pulled me back.
Suddenly, I was sitting on Japen’s lap. I blinked twice and looked over my shoulder, meeting his gaze.
“I’ll leave with you, or I’ll stay here with you,” he said, a mischievous grin on his lips. He was clearly teasing me.
I closed my eyes tightly. “Japen-”
I stopped speaking when I felt his lips touch my cheek. He pulled me closer. My arm pressed against his chest.
“I’ll ask Don for your hand,” he said.
My brow furrowed. “No.” I looked away. “He’ll never agree, and you’ll only get yourself in trouble.”
“Don’t you believe I can fight for you, Azora?”
I sighed and shifted to sit on his thigh, facing Japen. I looked straight into his eyes. “You can’t fight Dad.”
“What if I can?”
My expression softened at his determination. “You don’t have to prove your love to me, Japen. I know it’s genuine. I’ve seen it. Please… don’t be difficult. Please, just leave.”
He moved his hand to hold my waist, his eyes fixed on my face. “Won’t you give me a chance?” he asked.
My eyes narrowed at his words. “A chance?”
But he looked away. “Let’s slip out.”
“You’re joking.”
“No.” He met my eyes. “Once I leave here, I’m taking you with me.”
I sighed. I didn’t realize he was this stubborn. He used to follow whatever I wanted. I didn’t know why he was opposing me tonight. If I had known he would be so stubborn, I would have changed the plan. I should have let him sleep first before pushing him out of the mansion. But that would complicate things. I sighed again.
How could I convince him to sneak out?
My thoughts were interrupted when Japen placed a soft kiss on my bare shoulder. My dress strap had slipped off. I adjusted it and glared at Japen, but he kissed my cheek and then nuzzled my neck. I felt his warm breath on my skin.
“W-What are you doing?” I whispered.
“Nothing.” He stopped and sighed. “I’ll wait for you.”
My ears perked up at his words. I blinked several times and stared at him in disbelief. “You’ll… leave?”
“Don’t look at me like that or I might change my mind.”
I smiled at him and closed the distance between us, hugging Japen. “Thank you.”
He grunted and tapped my shoulder. “Don’t thank me. It’s against my will to leave.”
I nodded and closed my eyes. “Just three more years. Wait for me, and I’ll find you after three years.”
“So long.”
I chuckled at what he said. “Don’t worry. I’ll marry you as soon as I graduate from college. So don’t surround yourself with other girls. I’ll get jealous.”
He wrapped his arms around me and pulled me closer. “I’ll miss you.”
A warm feeling filled my chest as I shook his hands. Tears welled in my eyes as I looked up at him. “I love you,” I whispered, giving him a soft kiss on the cheek. “I won’t marry any man but you.”
He wiped the tears from my cheek and smiled at me. “You’re the only woman I’ll marry, Azora.”
I caressed his cheek, and he did the same. But our moment was interrupted when I heard someone trying to unlock the door hurriedly from outside. Then the door opened, and Anya came into view. She paused when she saw Japen and me.
She immediately looked down at the floor. “Miss, Japen needs to leave now.”
I nodded. I got up from sitting on Japen’s thigh, but I was surprised when he suddenly grabbed my neck and kissed me passionately on the lips. After a moment, he pulled away as we both tried to catch our breath.
“I’ll wait for you,” he whispered. “I’ll wait for you, Azora.”
I nodded quickly and smiled at him. He let go of me and followed Anya out the door. I watched as they disappeared from sight.
My knees buckled, and I sank to the floor. Tears began streaming down my cheeks. I closed my eyes tightly and bit my lip to stifle my sobs.
I should be happy. Japen was free now, and he promised to wait for me. I should be grateful that he was out of there, away from the trouble I was facing.
But suddenly, I heard a gunshot. My body froze as I blinked repeatedly. It came from outside the mansion, and my heart started racing.
Who pulled the trigger? Did someone get hurt?
