Chapter 97
Betrayal
Detective James’ POV:
I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. Sergeant Sarah, a colleague I had trusted and worked with for years, was rummaging through the evidence room, her eyes scanning the shelves frantically.
I had never been suspicious of her for a while, but I had never thought she would stoop to this.
I watched how she tried the spare keys on the doors and tried severally to open the doors forcefully.
I moved closer without her knowledge until the door was opened.
As I watched, she pulled out a file and began to rip it apart, the papers scattering across the floor.
My heart raced as I realized what she was doing… she was trying to destroy evidence. Evidence that could bring down the Syndicate, evidence that could put an end to the violence and corruption that had plagued our city for so long.
I couldn’t let her do it. I had to act fast. I drew my gun and burst into the room, my heart pounding in my chest.
“Sergeant Sarah, you need to stop! Now!” I ordered her.
“What are you even doing?” I asked her.
“James, I… I can explain.” She spun around, her eyes wide with fear.
“Explain what?” I demanded, my anger rising.
“Why you’re trying to destroy evidence? Why you’re working with the Syndicate?” I asked her as her eyes widened.
“I didn’t have a choice, James. They promised me money, a lot of money. And they threatened to hurt my family if I didn’t cooperate.” Sarah took a step back, her eyes darting around the room.
I felt a wave of disgust go through my body.
“You sold out for money? After everything we’ve been through together. After all the times we’ve put our lives on the line to protect this city?” I asked in disgust.
“I know it was wrong, James. But I did not know what else to do. I was in debt, and I couldn’t see a way out.” Sarah confessed.
“And then they offered me a way out, a way to pay off my debts and start fresh.” She shook her head, tears streaming down her face.
“You should have come to me, Sarah. I would have helped you. We could have worked together to find a way out of your debt.” I holstered my gun and approached her, my heart heavy with disappointment.
“Don’t you dare step any foot close by!” I told her as she moved closer.
“You are a culprit, and you were caught right in the act!” I informed as her eyes went straight to the handcuffs with fear and regret in her eyes.
I know, James. I’m sorry. I was so stupid. I didn’t think about the consequences, I didn’t think about the harm I could cause.” She looked up at me, her eyes filled with regret.
“I’m afraid it’s too late for apologies, Sarah. You’re under arrest.” I sighed and pulled out my handcuffs.
“And mind you, whatever you say or do will be used against you in the court of law!” I read Sarah her rights.
As I led her away, I couldn’t help but wonder how many other colleagues might be working with the Syndicate. How many other betrayals had I missed? How many other lives had been ruined by the Syndicate’s corruption and violence?
I knew I had to keep pushing forward, no matter how hard it got. I had to bring down the Syndicate, no matter what it took. I had to make sure that justice was served, and that those responsible for the violence and corruption were held accountable.
But for now, I had to deal with the betrayal of a colleague I had trusted. And that was a hard pill to swallow.
As I booked Sarah into custody, I couldn’t help but think about all the times we had worked together, all the cases we had solved. I had considered her a friend, a colleague I could trust. And now, it was all gone, destroyed by her betrayal.
I knew I had to move on, to focus on the task at hand. But it was hard, hard to see someone I had trusted fall so far. Hard to see the damage that the Syndicate had done, the lives they had ruined.
But I knew I couldn’t give up. I had to keep fighting, no matter what. For justice, for the truth, and for the people of this city who deserved better.
“Now, I need you to start talking!” I told Sarah as we settled in.
“Tell me everything, I need to know!” He said.
“Who knows, this will fasten your freedom and probably lessen your jail term!” I said.
“I know nothing, James!” Sarah said as she avoided eye contact with me.
“I only did this for the money!” She lied.
“Okay!” I said as I got up from my seat.
“If you know nothing, that is fine, and I hope to see spend your whole life in jail for trying to fight the law!” I said and turned to leave.
“No, no!” She said.
“Wait!” Sarah asked me to stay.
“I can only give you a name.” She said as I got back to my seat.
“Okay!” I said.
“What’s the name?” I asked her.
“Lena… Lena Lee!” Sarah whispered.
“She is not the boss there, but she has direct Access to him!” She revealed.
“I heard that they will be having a product lunch, so they will all be present!” She told me.
“I will not be telling you where it is, you will figure that out yourself!” Sarah told me.
“And why is that?” I asked her.
“Because no one knows the exact location ever… like I said… they are a highly secretive gang!” Sarah explained.
“And you should be careful. Lena Lee isn’t a nice woman!” She said rolling her eyes.
“But you know too much for someone who was just promised money!” I noticed.
“Are you sure that you are not a part of the Syndicate?” I asked her.
“How will you say such thing?” She asked me.
“I can never be a part of that terrible gang!” Sarah said.
“But you love their terrible money!” I said and I left the interrogation room.
I went back to the office to strategize and make sure that I End the existence of the syndicate.
I am more than determined that I will be able to bring them. All down and get justice and make them. pay for all the crime they have committed.
I walked out knowing that this is just the beginning of another chapter.
