Chapter 92
The threat.
Megan’s POV:
I guess it was time for healing from the whole conversation. It was all silence when I rode back how with Jane who will steal few glances at me, from time to time.
“Are you okay?” She will ask from time to time.
“Yes!” I replied.
“I will see you tomorrow!” I said and I got out of the vehicle.
“You can talk to me if you need anything!” Jane said and I got into the house.
I threw myself into the bed and I was still reeling from the revelation that my parents were alive. I had so many questions, so many emotions. But before I could even begin to process it all, I received a chilling message.
“You’re next,” it read.
At first, I thought it was just a prank or meant for someone else. But then I saw the symbol at the bottom of the page. The same symbol that my parents had everywhere around their room and asked me to look out for.
My heart racing, I realized that I was in danger. The people who had been chasing my parents all these years had finally found me.
I tried to stay calm, to think clearly. But my mind was racing. What did they want from me? Why were they threatening me?
I knew I had to act fast. I could not just sit around and wait for them to come after me. So, I did the only thing I could think of was to go to the police.
But when I got to the station, I realized that I did not know where to start. Who could I trust? Who would believe me?
“I need to speak to someone,” I said.
“It is an emergency.” I walked up to the front desk, trying to compose myself.
“What is going on?” The officer behind the desk looked up at me, his expression skeptical.
“Oh, my goodness!” I thought.
“He does not even look approachable!” I thought.
“I wished detective James was around here, it would have been best speaking to him!” I thought.
“My parents are in witness protection,” I said.
“And now someone is threatening me.” I hesitated, unsure of how much to reveal. But something about his expression told me that I could trust him.
“Let me get someone to help you,” he said as his expression changed, from skepticism to concern.
“Detective James,” the officer called.
“Detective James!” I thought.
“I am so lucky!” I thought.
“I understand you are in a situation.”He led me to a small room in the back, where a detective was waiting for me.
“My parents are alive,” I said comfortably on seeing him.
“But someone is threatening me. They are the same people who have been chasing my parents all these years.”I nodded, trying to keep my tears at bay.
“We will do everything we can to protect you,” he said.
“But you have to be careful. These people are dangerous.” Detective James’ expression was serious.
“You know them?” I asked him.
“Yes, and I know about your parents’ case but I never knew that they were still alive till now!” He explained.
I nodded, feeling a sense of relief wash over me. I knew that I was not alone, that I had someone on my side.
But as I left the station, I could not shake off the feeling that I was being watched. That unblinking gaze was still on me, waiting for its moment to strike.
I knew that I had to be careful, that I could not let my guard down for a moment. But it was hard, when all I wanted to do was feel safe again.
Over the next few days, I was on edge. I looked over my shoulder constantly, expecting to see someone lurking in the shadows. I barely slept, my mind racing with worst case scenarios.
And then, one night, I was coming back from seeing Chris after we spoke about my newly found family when I got another message, immediately I turned my doorknob.
“We are closing in,” it read.
I knew that I had to act fast. I could mot just sit around and wait for them to come after me. So, I did the only thing I could think of… I went to my parents.
They were living in a small town a few hours away, under assumed identities. I had only visited them a few times, but I knew that they would be able to help me.
As I drove to their house, my heart was racing. What if they were already there, waiting for me?
But when I arrived, everything seemed normal. My mother was sitting in the living room, watching TV.
“Mom,” I said, trying to keep my voice steady.
“I need your help.” I revealed.
“What’s going on?” She looked up at me, concerned.
I took a deep breath and told her everything. About the messages, about the symbol, about the feeling of being watched.
She listened intently, her expressions growing more and more serious. When I finished, she nodded.
“I will do everything we can to protect you,” my mother said.
“But you have to be careful. These people are dangerous.” These words made me remember what detective James said but I simply nodded.
However, I knew that I was not alone, that I had my parents on my side.
But as we sat there, watching the sun set through the window, I could shake the feeling that we were all in grave danger. That unblinking gaze was still on us, waiting for its moment to strike.
And I knew that we had to be ready.
But where is Dad? I have not seen him around here since I stepped foot here.
“Mom, can I ask you something?” I said, my curiosity getting the better of me.
“Of course, sweetie,” she replied, looking at me with a hint of concern.
“What’s on your mind?” She asked me.
“Well, I have noticed that I only see you around,” I said, trying to choose my words carefully.
“Where is Dad? I mean, I know you’re both in witness protection and all, but shouldn’t he be here with us too?” I continued.
“Your father is… away,” she said finally, her voice barely above a whisper. My mother’s expression changed, a mix of sadness and worry crossing her face.
“Away?” I repeated, feeling a sense of unease.
“What do you mean? Is he in danger?”
My mother sighed, her eyes gazing off into the distance. “He’s in a safe place, Megan. But he can’t be here with us right now. It’s too risky.”
I felt a surge of frustration and fear. “What’s going on, Mom? You’re not telling me something. Is Dad in trouble?”
My mother’s eyes snapped back to mine, a fierce determination in them. “Your father is fine, Megan. But he’s involved in something that could put us all in danger. That’s why he can’t be here right now.”
I felt a chill run down my spine. What was my father involved in? And why was it so dangerous? I knew that my parents were hiding something from me, something big. And I was determined to find out what it was.
