Why You?

Book:Their Human Mate Published:2024-6-22

Seth
Fuck my life. Was I being punished? Did Selene really hate me enough to not only give me a human mate, but to make sure the bond wouldn’t be rejected because it was Carter’s bond as well? I had always suspected we would share a mate, and I was even willing to be okay with that, but a fucking human. A HUMAN. She invaded my thoughts like a fucking tidal wave. Stupid fucking mate bond. Everything about her was so vivid. She was different in looks, not your usual skinny Malibu Barbie with huge silicone booties, as was common here in Miami.
She has all the natural thickness to her that I appreciate. I didn’t care for skinny women, or women who injected so many silicones into their asses or tits to fit in. Instant turn off. Her hair was so red. So beautiful. It definitely matched her name. Ember, such a beautiful name, with a killer fucking body that I just wanted to…
Fuck, I growled. My lust was clouding my judgment and I shook my head. I hated her kind. There was no reason for me to even be thinking that way about her. I tried my best to think of something else. I changed it to the top of the coming trouble I felt was coming. I have always had a great sense of danger, and in my bones. I knew something was coming. We had reports of increased wolf activity from our enemy pack in Tallahassee.
Ryder was stirring up trouble, always trying to find information that could help him invade our pack. He had been stalking our borders, sending spies to abduct and torture our men. I decided to fight fire with fire. Some of his men are now working for our side, giving information about him and his activities. I wanted to invade as soon as possible and take over, but a wolf is only as strong as a human, and Ryder is a cocky fucking bastard. He was smart though, and played dirty, but he should never underestimate me. I had a plan. Find a way to get to this human he was so obsessed with and eat her fucking heart right in front of him.
My beastly side loved the idea. She was not his mate, just his muse. What did I care about anyway? One less dead ass fucking human. My thoughts reverted to Ember. Fucking humans. It took a lot just for me to sign on for her employment. I took a few days before I did, weighing the pros and cons. I decided I would though. What better than having her close to me, so I can show her just how much I was repulsed by her. My plan was to make her leave on her own free will. That way, Carter could not blame me for her choosing to leave. She would be leaving voluntarily. She was only human, and humans were weak. Always crying over a few choice words. She would succumb. I just knew it.
That very same night, I came back to the packhouse, but Carter was not there. I didn’t look for him. He would come when he chose to. I shifted and went for a run, allowing my wolf instincts to take over. I closed my eyes and just ran. Ran free and wild through the forest. I heard some cars, but I didn’t want to stop. It was nighttime, and my wolf blended in with the night. He stuck to the trees and the cover of darkness. We ran too fast for any human eye to see.
When I opened my eyes, I was somehow back in the inner city. I took a sniff on instinct, and I smelled her. I looked up at the apartment I was in. She was there. I shifted back. Why the fuck did my wolf lead me here? I jumped up to her window. Instinct told me where she was. I saw her through the window, asleep. Her hair was tangled in a mess around her face and the covers were off her. My animal felt a need to be next to her. Fine you fucker, I said to it.
I slid the window open, careful enough not to wake her. I could smell Jax, and I knew he knew I was here. He was no longer in her room though. I looked around her apartment at a glance. It was actually nice and clean. A value I always wanted my mate to have.
” Alpha”, He greeted me through the link. I stood next to her bed. She looked so beautiful, for a fucking human. So fragile. Her apartment was cold. Is she trying to fucking freeze herself? On instinct, I covered her body with covers. She half woke up and looked at me.
” Seth”, She said, still sleepy. I smiled a bit at hearing her say my name. It was like she was the only person from now on that I wanted to say my name. Fuck this. She was getting in my head. I sent her back to sleep, having her think it was just a dream before I gave her one last look and jumped out the window, landing on my feet. I shifted back and ran back to the packhouse. This whole plan was going to be way harder than I thought if just her mere presence could make me feel soft towards her. I was thinking back to her interview. She was professional. Very much. I could tell she had leadership experience already. Something in the eyes that made you want to look at her and listen. It was the same reaction many people had when they looked at me.
She didn’t back down. Not even once when I attempted to get under her skin. Why I felt the need to do that, I will never know. Again, humans are weak, so no matter how tough of an exterior, I know I will pierce it. She will never be good enough to be the Luna of Woodstone pack. I’ll see to it, if that’s the last thing I do. I arrived back at the packhouse and went to the room to shower and put on clothes.
Carter looked at me, taking a sniff. I knew his alpha nose would smell her scent on me, just like I smelled her on him. Jax had already told me what happened with them earlier. He just smiled at me knowingly, and went back to watching tv on the couch, not saying anything. I probably should have admitted this to myself, but I refused to. Admitted the fact that ever since Ember walked into Moonlight, I was hers and hers alone, but I couldn’t let myself go through it. Not again. Never fucking again.
