Candice turned to look at Robert smile, and it was very uncomfortable, so she lowered her head.
Robert sighed, “Still can’t let go of what happened? I’ve already let things go. Looking at you so happy with my brother, I knew that divorcing you was the one thing that I decided correctly in my whole life.”
Candice’s head sunk lower, “Robert, it was your brother and I being too selfish…”
Robert shook his head, “You and my brother were never selfish, it was I who was the selfish one. Years ago if it weren’t for me trying to hide my homosexual identity, I wouldn’t have approached you with aim, and married you. After marrying you, I was worried that you might catch on to something after a long time of not consummating the marriage, so I went selfishly and asked my brother to do it for me. I had selfishly done all these, and yet I did not think of the pain it would cause to my brother and the harm to you. Human beings are not without feelings, so it’s natural that my brother and you would fall for each other. It was my immaturity hat cause you two all this pain, the only thing I could do was to let you two be together, to lessen my guiltiness.
Candice looked at Robert, her head leaned towards one side, “Could you really let it go?”
Robert heaved a sigh into the air, “When I signed on the divorce settlement, I already let go. That month you and my brother suddenly disappeared, I thought about a lot. I told God that as long as you two are alive, I would let go and let you two be together. My brother has had a hard time for the first part of his life, managing the company and worrying about me. He could even promise to marry Lily, that nasty woman for me. My brother had not lived for himself before, and you’re a great woman, so kind that it was saddening, even forgave me for all the wrongs I made. I couldn’t be on the receiving end of you both any longer, it’s time that I should do something in return.”
The uncomfortableness slowly loosened from Candice’s heart, and she reached to hold Robert’s hand, “Robert, thank you so much for your sacrifice.”
Robert smiled, although he was matured and attractive, he still smiled as bright as the sun, “You don’t have to thank me for anything, my let go was as much as a closure for me as it was for you.”
Candice smiled. “Now that you’re the mighty CEO, and looked like your brother then, were there many women that went after you?”
Robert shrugged, “Those aggressive women are unsuitable to be my wife.”
“Don’t you have any targets?”
“The new intern in office looks fun. She’s so young, yet she wears a very old-fashioned black-rimmed glasses. She didn’t even take a fancy to me or get aggressive when she saw my attractive self, but instead avoided me like the plague.”
“So you should find out why she avoided you.”
“Is that necessary?”
“Of course it is!”
“… I’ll ask her tomorrow.”
“Alright, remember to be friendly.”
Under the setting sun, the two chatted like old friends. When everything was let go and released, the sky was bluer and even breathing felt easier.
Months later, outside the operating theatre, Emerson and Robert waited anxiously outside. Edward who was now six years old had grew up a lot, yet the immatureness in his features were still there. He waited anxiously along with his two fathers, so anxious to see his sister to see if she was as pretty and cute as his father told him.
The doors of the theatre opened, and the nurse walked out carrying the baby, “It’s a girl weighing six pounds and three ounces.”
Emerson asked anxiously, “What about the mother?”
The nurse replied, “The mother is undergoing the finishing procedures, her condition is looking fine now.”
The nurse went into the theatre again, Emerson looked at his daughter in his arms, he was happy but still worried about Candice’s procedure after.
Edward sat around his big father impatiently and moved closer to take a look, and he was shocked, “My god, so this monkey is supposed to be my pretty and cute sister?”
Emerson bent down curiously and looked closely as well, “Maybe all babies look like that when they are newborns.”
Emerson passed his daughter to Robert and told him to bring her into the room. He continued to wait for his woman outside. His heart was pumping at his throat, every minute felt like a century.
After another hour, the door of the operation theatre opened again.
The main doctor walked out and heaved a long breath, “Congratulations, Mr. Emerson, the tumour in your wife’s left ovary was actually an endometrioma, it’s often misdiagnosed as a pernicious tumour. It’s successfully removed now, the nurse will push her out later.
Emerson grabbed the doctor’s hand excitedly, “Doctor, so you mean that she won’t get sick anytime, and her body is completely fine?
The doctor nodded. “Yes, your wife would be perfectly fine after the surgery. In the future, she’ll live until riper old age with you.”
Sunlight shone on Emerson’s smiling face through the window. The end of the world did not come, the best type of luck was indeed a miracle.
Candice, it was so good to have you accompany me for the rest of my life.
