Harold shook her body, but she showed no reaction at all.
He was checking her injuries on the body, but they were not too deep, and yet she had lost a lot of blood. Her face was getting paler with every passing minute, and her breathing also heavier, it was as if her life was fading from her. It gave Harold no time to think.
He picked her up from the ground and ran towards the parking lot, got into the car and raced to the hospital.
When they arrived, the doctors and nurses took one look at the situation and immediately put her on a bed, and started to roll her to the OR.
Harold was standing at the same place, watching the nurses and doctors in a big chaos, the white coats of the nurses almost made him sick.
The flashy lights of the emergency room started to hurt his eyes, and Harold was waiting in front of the OR door impatiently.
When the light on top of the OR turned off, Harold waited in front of it for the doctors to come out and tell him about the situation. He was sitting quietly on the bench in the hall, the head bowed down, his hands made into fists.
When he watched Jenny being pushed into the OR, he felt so helpless like he has never felt before.
Harold’s figure looked even colder than usually, as if he has just gone through war, the usual strong tall man did not exist anymore.
He was hating himself for not appearing sooner, maybe she wouldn’t have gotten injured, or maybe if he was just watching over her everyday, this would have never happened at all. He was feeling so tired, he could not bear Jenny to get hurt anymore.
It was as if half a century passed when Jenny was finally pushed out of surgery.
She looked as if she has made it out of danger, and Harold watched her weak face with pain.
Jenny was laying on the hospital bed, the feeling of anesthetic was not completely faded yet, and she felt as if in a dream.
Was she dead?
Where was here?
Jenny felt as if she was floating in a completely white world, everything around her was white, the sky, the ground, even the flowers and the grass, and the gown she was wearing was also white.
Was this the place where people went after death?
Jenny turned around and looked at the world in front of her.
Then, suddenly, all the white turned into black.
She watched the white world crash, and there was no where to hide for her.
Just as she was looking around for a place to go, the drunk guy appeared in front of her, getting closer step by step. Jenny panicked when she saw him, trying to back away, but there was a deep cliff right behind her.
When she backed as far as possible, there was only one way she could go, and that was to jump off the cliff, and she would vanish into nothing.
Are dead people going to experience death one more time?
Jenny accepted what was coming, turned around and was going to jump off, when there were a pair of hands grabbing her…
“Don’t be afraid, I am here.”
Harold was right beside her bed, he noticed that her expression was pure panic, as if she was trying to fight something.
He guessed that she was having a nightmare, and tried to wake her from the dream.
“Doc, how is her condition now?” Harold looked around for a doctor and asked the next best one he saw, his eyes were filled with worries.
The doctor sighed, “She is not in any life danger right now, but we will need to keep her here a few days to check up on her, it could be possible that her wound is going to infect, so we cannot say anything for sure right now.”
Harold nodded, “Use the best medication for your treatments, anything that is going to help her.”
“That is not a problem.”
When everything was clarified, the nurse found a room for Jenny.
“Her body is very weak right now, she cannot eat, so we will have to give her IV nutrition for now. If you are staying with her, you can massage her muscles, but be careful of the wound.”
The nurse was putting on the IV and explaining everything to Harold.
Harold looked at her, “How long will it take for her to wake up?”
“I don’t know about that, it could be a few hours, it could also be a few days.”
When he heard that, his heart was aching.
He wished that he arrived just a little earlier, then she would not be laying here, he was wondering how helpless she was feeling when she was being attacked.
The more he thought about it, the more he blamed himself. He knew this was not helpful, she was already laying here, now all he could do was to try and help her recover.
When the nurse left, he sat beside Jenny, reached out and stroke her pale face, he felt like someone was squeezing his heart.
If he could only be with her all the time, maybe she wouldn’t have suffered so much these months. That James was saying that he loved her, but where was he when she was in trouble?
When he thought of that, his eyes went dark.
No wonder he couldn’t feel assured, it was because the people around her weren’t taking care of her well enough.
Now all Jenny had was Harold, so no matter what, he would be there for her until she woke up.
Fortunately, his company and work in China was not too demanding, and he didn’t need to take care of all that, so he could put all of his focus on Jenny now.
Jenny was shaking her head in the dream, “No, don’t come closer!”
The scene in her dream had already changed, the big strong guy was just beside her, when a shadow came to pull her away.
She wanted to see who that shadow was, but she couldn’t, maybe it was because the sky was too dark, and the lights were not good enough.
She felt a good squeeze on her hand, and someone saying, “Don’t be scared.”
She didn’t know why, but that voice was so familiar, as if it was a long time friend, someone who came for her when she needed it most.
She saw the drunk guy starting to come for her from behind.
His speed was so fast it was impossible to run away, she knew she was going to get hurt, but then the shadow threw himself in front of her and took the hit for her.
“NO!”
Jenny yelled in her sleep, her voice cracking.
Harold frowned, he stretched out his hand to hold hers, and said softly, “Don’t be afraid, I am here.”
Whatever magical force was in his voice, he managed to calm down Jenny in her sleep, and her expression relaxed.
Harold watched her, he felt his throat tighten up, on his face, the usual cold and arrogant expression has faded, as if he was not the president of a big company anymore.
His hands were warming up, the temperature was coming from Jenny’s hand. Her chest lifting with her breath, and her lashes moving with her breath, as if they were stroking Harold’s heart too.
Time was passing, it was already the next day. Harold has not slept the whole night, he was afraid he was going to miss Jenny wake up.
There was a knock on the door, and a nurse came in to change the IV medication for Jenny. She turned to Harold and asked, “Are you her only family here?”
