They slept at the restaurant at night. James was worried that Kara would catch a cold, so he flipped through the window, ran upstairs, found two quilts and a sweater, and put the sweater on Kara.
The two of them were in a quilt. Seeing her sleeping soundly like a piggy, James smiled helplessly.
It was only at this time that he dared to touch her lower abdomen and tried to get close to the baby.
Perhaps it was still early. Her lower abdomen was flat, and there were no abnormalities. Yet he couldn’t calm down.
If he made up his mind to get rid of the baby, he absolutely could not tell her, or she would cry miserably.
Suddenly, he saw a flash of light outside the window. James didn’t pay attention to it. Then he heard footsteps and the sound of chasing. He looked up and glanced through the window.
He saw two men with their faces covered. They seemed to have stolen something and were escaping.
Obviously, the town was not very well policed, but it had nothing to do with him.
Suddenly, he thought of something. He got up, put on his clothes, and nimbly jumped out of the window to capture the two thieves.
The next day, the owner went downstairs to ask James to get up and work just after dawn.
He saw Kara being wrapped in two fine quilts. Yesterday, she was wearing a mask and a hat, and he didn’t get to see her face.
Now that she was in a deep sleep, her shoulder-length hair was messy and scattered, revealing a hint of laziness. Her face was fair and delicate, and her cheeks were so rosy that it made one want to pinch them.
The thought appeared in the owner’s mind, and his body acted quicker than his mind. He reached out to pinch her face, but someone grabbed his wrist.
The man had strong hands. The owner widened his eyes in pain, and his face was a bit fierce.
“We will get up soon. No need to trouble you.”
The owner was terrified by James’ cold voice. Yet it soon came to the owner that the two people in front of him were just a pair of homeless poor people. Who gave the man the nerve to throw a tantrum in front of him?
“Where did you get these quilts?”
They were so poor that they couldn’t afford food. How come they had such fine quilts?
“I found them on the street.”
The owner was speechless.
James glanced at the owner coldly with his brown eyes and shook off the owner’s hand.
Kara heard the noise and opened her sleepy eyes in confusion slowly. Then she saw the owner with a fierce face. She sat up in shock.
James went forward to help her put on her clothes. Their bed was made up of several dining tables, and it was a bit high. When she was putting on her shoes, he held her in his arms to support her.
He was worried that she might fall.
The man protected his wife tentatively. Although the man was in a sorry state, he didn’t look like someone from the slums at all.
After his wife’s feet landed on the ground, he gently used his fingers to help her comb her hair, and then he helped her put her hat and mask on.
Seeing that, the owner rubbed his wrist, which was red from being pinched, and was furious. He shouted coldly and told them to hurry up. If the man didn’t finish today’s work, he wouldn’t be paid.
James glanced at the owner from the corner of his eyes, his lips curling into a cold sneer.
Whether or not he would stay here today remained in doubt!
The owner wanted to say something, but when he met the man’s malicious gaze, he moved his mouth and didn’t say a word in the end. He was even more annoyed.
After Kara and James got up, Kara helped to roll up the quilts, and James returned the tables to their original positions.
Then, in front of the owner, he threw the two quilts into the trash.
The owner was so pissed off, and in his eyes, James was just an eyesore. The owner secretly decided to teach James a lesson when James got down to work.
The owner thought, ‘I took them in with generosity. How dare he act out?’
Just as the owner was thinking about how to mess with James, James did not go to the kitchen at all. Instead, he held Kara’s hand and walked out.
“Where are you going?”
“We’re having breakfast. What is it? Are you paying?” James sneered.
The owner didn’t say anything.
His face turned livid, and he went to the kitchen angrily.
Kara followed James to have breakfast. They went to a place that looked expensive.
“James, the food here must be expensive. Let’s go somewhere cheaper. Maybe the taste will be the same.”
James held her hand and did not let go. He did not stop. When he walked to the waiter who took the orders, he spoke with a strong local accent.
He ordered three pieces of bread with different flavors, a cup of milk, a cup of coffee, and some desserts.
Kara looked at him with a frown. He ordered so many things. They would cost him at least two hundred.
To her surprise, he paid with a wad of cash from his pocket.
While having breakfast, Kara had a strange expression on her face. She glanced at him a few times and then picked her fingers.
Her hesitance was seen by James. He pinched her face.
“What’s on your mind?”
“James, the money… Did you…”
Her voice was very small, and when she asked, she looked guilty.
Stealing some food was justifiable because the owner was so stingy. He deliberately deducted James’ salary. But stealing money was a different thing. She felt weird.
James knew what she meant. But it wasn’t what she thought. Although the money came from an unknown source, he didn’t steal it.
“No.”
He denied it and then closed his mouth.
Kara frowned and stared at the breakfast on the table, but she had no appetite at all. She was still worried.
Just because they were in trouble didn’t mean they could do something against their principles.
“You ate happily last night. Why are you different today?” James frowned when he saw that she did not eat anything.
Kara bit her lower lip. “James, I’m not that delicate. I can work. We can earn money ourselves.”
Only then did James realize that she was worried that he stole the money, and she would have a guilty conscience while eating.
They were in a dilemma, yet she didn’t lose her principles.
However, sticking to her principles had nothing to do with the situation she was in.
His heart softened, and he rubbed her head. “I didn’t steal the money. And you don’t have to worry about where it comes from. Just eat. We have more important things to do.”
Kara breathed a sigh of relief after he explained to her patiently. Her trust in him was unconditional. Since he said he didn’t steal the money, then he didn’t steal it.
She quickly picked up the bread, took a bite, and handed another piece of bread to him for him to eat.
As James ate his bread, he took out an old phone. She didn’t know what was on the phone, yet he kept looking at the screen. Suddenly, he frowned.
Kara stared at him worriedly and thought, ‘When did he have a phone? How come I didn’t know?’
“James, what happened?”
James put the phone into his pocket and shook his head, urging her to eat.
He had just contacted Corey and learned that John had been seriously injured and had not found Nolan, whose life and death remained unknown.
James thought of what Nolan had said to him in the end, and he did not have much appetite, but he did not want to affect Kara, so he gritted his teeth and continued to eat with her.
The two had just finished eating when James saw two men pushing open the door and coming in. They asked the waiters something with two photos in their hands.
James narrowed his cold eyes and glanced at the photos in their hands. Those were photos of him and Kara. He immediately lowered Kara’s hat to cover half of her face.
