While Ava and I were in the car, it was as if we were not in ourselves. It also took us almost a couple of hours inside the hospital and we both seemed to float. The result of the test didn’t sink into our brains, but if there was anything else, Ava’s face couldn’t be painted.
—Flashback hours ago—
“We still need to know whether anything else occurred to you, so we’ll scan you. Please be patient. All we’ll do is set up a room for you.” He was going to walk away when Ava jumped up and stopped him.
“Me as well. I’d want to have a check-up.”
We sat at the doctor’s office waiting for them to prepare a room for the two of us. My doctor stated that he would not be the one to examine Ava, so Ava left first and proceeded to the first room because she had been called. Soon after, my doctor arrived, asked me to change into a hospital dress, and then placed me in a bed for an MRI, or magnetic resonance imaging. This is what you used to determine whether you have a brain tumor, a brain injury, an infection, or something else. Your entire body is shown here.
That, too, was long. After I put my clothes back on, I went to the doctor to check the MRI findings since they would be discussed immediately and you will receive a copy in 1-2 days. I leaned up close to the doctor and had a peek around. While he was still staring at the sights on the display. I went over there and couldn’t figure out how to read it. As he talked, I stared at the monitors.
“Well, Mrs. Adams, based on the findings, there were no issues or adverse effects with the medication you’re taking.” The only issue is this.” He pointed to a picture, which showed my belly, and there was a small circle there. I examined attentively, but I couldn’t figure out what it meant. “This is your abdomen’s insides. I can’t tell what it is since it’s so little, but see? The picture moves and becomes fuzzy, resembling a lump or anything trapped in your stomach. This is also the stage during which the fetus develops.”
I nodded in agreement, but I instantly turned to face him because of what he had just said. My eyes dilated as I couldn’t believe what the doctor next to me was saying. When I asked him to repeat what he said, he was still staring at the monitor intently.
“Could you just repeat what you said?”
“The stomach is still too tiny, but you are 70% pregnant, Mrs. Adams, therefore I recommend you discontinue your medication.” The drug I’m giving you is very potent, and it might endanger the kid. If you wish to see the results, they will be available in 1-2 days. If you want to be certain, return here in a week so we can take a closer look.” He then exited the room, leaving me speechless. I was left alone to process. When I was ready, I stepped over to the door and opened it.
The entrance to the room where Ava had previously entered was likewise open. You can’t figure out her face because you don’t know if she’s sad, afraid, or wants to weep. When she saw I was standing next to her, she turned to face me. At the very least, I was inept at what I discovered. I turned to face her.
“I am pregnant.”
I was taken aback since we were speaking at the same moment, but instead of laughing, I held my mouth. Thinking about what she said. Did I assume she didn’t have a boyfriend? What caused her to become pregnant? I was about to question her when my phone rang again in my purse. Turstin was at it again when I took a look, but this time his message was different.
“Ava, where the fuck are you?!?”
I instantly realized that Ava had previously used my phone. Then it dawned on me why she looked like this and how she reacted when she found out she was pregnant. Wait a minute…
“WHAT?!?!?” DON’T TELL ME IT’S TURSTIN’S?”
She swiftly seized my lips in her palm and covered them. I can’t believe it! When did they start meeting in secret?! What I am witnessing now appears to be much hazier than the term hazy!
—End of flashback—
I spoke in the middle of our stillness. “I’d like to eat an apple with ketchup, Ava.” I became salivating, simply thinking about dipping the apple in the ketchup. I gazed out the window as if out of my head, waiting for her to answer so I could buy what I wanted to eat.
She groaned and stamped her foot, clearly annoyed. “I TOLD HIM NOT TO SHOOT INSIDE, BUT YOUR COUSIN-IN-LAW IS VERY HORNY!!” I shielded my ears as she screamed in the vehicle.
“Hey! Your baby!” I softly smacked her arm. I’m worried anything may happen to her kid since she moves so hastily!
I came out when she was having a fit. I want to eat apples with ketchup. I got off her car right away and took a cab so I wouldn’t have to say goodbye to that insane woman. I texted Turstin while I was riding. “We are at the **** Hospital.” I know Ava hasn’t left yet since she’s still toying with her brain, presumably because she hasn’t digested the fact that she’s pregnant yet. I simply want Turstin to be aware.
I went to the market pretty quickly and purchased six apples and ketchup. I just know that Randall came into the office today, and since I can’t do anything else, I’ll just go there. Also, that desperate woman may return.
Once inside the company, I immediately asked the receptionist where Randall was. He said he was in his office, so I immediately pressed the floor number button in the elevator. I met his secretary just after the elevator opened. She smiled at me and greeted me.
“Mrs. Adams, just wait inside Mr. Adams’s office because he is in the board meeting now.” She helped me in and took my bag. Because I was a little in need, I let her. I immediately sat down in Randall’s swivel chair and put the apples and ketchup on his table. The secretary was still wondering about what I was carrying, but I just smiled at her and requested a container.
“Does Randall have a bowl and a knife?”
“Please, Mrs. Adams, give me a second.” She went right away, and I think she returned in less than two minutes with the items I had asked from her. She also said her goodbyes straight away. When I peeled the apple, I sliced it and ate it rapidly; I finished one apple quickly, so I peeled the second. The door swung open as I was doing it. I assumed Randall had entered, but I was mistaken.
When Charlotte noticed who was seated in Randall’s swivel chair, her smile rapidly faded.
