James paid no attention to his loss of sense of taste before.
All these years, his sensitive nose had made up for his loss of sense of taste, and only Will knew his condition.
However, ever since he met Kara, he had unconsciously concealed his defeat. He felt that he was kind of disabled and was afraid that she might find out.
When she asked about this, he was even terrified and asked himself a few questions for the first time.
‘Would she dislike me and treat me differently after knowing that I lost my sense of taste?’
Just when he was worried and finally gathered his courage to tell her, Kara gave him an envious look which made him speechless.
“So, you don’t mind?”
“Mind what?” Kara was confused, with her pure eyes wide open.
“I’m just a little surprised.”
Kara frowned and caressed his throat with her soft fingers.
“Although it’s alright without the sense of taste, it’s still a pity that you wouldn’t know how delicious the food is. Well, from now on, I will describe the taste of food for you whenever I eat something delicious.”
If one was blind, the people who loved him would be his eyes, instead of giving him a cold shoulder.
If one couldn’t fall asleep, the people who cherished him would accompany him, instead of annoying him.
She could do nothing about his loss of sense of taste, but she would try her best to help him.
James looked at her quietly. Kara could always surprise him.
Holding her little hand tightly, he smiled, “Little fool, aren’t you trying to make excuses for being a foodie?”
Feeling somehow guilty, Kara coughed, “Of course not. There is so much delicious food with all kinds of flavors. It’s unfair if you forbid me to try them because you can’t.”
“…” James went speechless.
Because last time he stopped her from eating sweet food, she wanted to punish him.
Kara thought for a while and dragged his hand, “Then why hadn’t you told me about your illness until you came to see my mother?”
He took her to the lawn and sat down. The lawn was trimmed well and the grass was green, surrounded by flowers.
It was summer now, a season when flowers bloom.
James stared at the blooming flowers, his brown eyes turned cold and sharp.
“I lost my sense of taste on the day my mother passed away.”
When Vivian’s death was brought up, Kara frowned and rested her head on his lap, listening to him patiently.
“I still remember when I went to look for my mother, I wanted to give her a surprise with the prize for the exam. But when I got to her apartment, I saw blood was all over the bathroom.”
“Mom was in the bathtub. When I picked her up, I tasted her blood and since then I couldn’t taste anything else.”
He told the stories of the past with a low voice as he softly combed her hair, as if he was sorting out his memories in his mind.
Kara grabbed his big hands and hugged him, not knowing what to say to comfort him.
“James, I’m with you now.”
James looked at her in surprise. Now he felt warm by her words, the memories of the past could not make his heart cold anymore.
He grabbed her collar and pushed her away slightly, “Little fool, don’t always try to take advantage of me. Look at the grasses on your clothes.”
There were some grasses sticking to her clothes for she was lying on the grass just now.
Kara was planning to say something nice to comfort him but now, she was annoyed by him and only wanted to pinch him.
“Yes, I want to take advantage of you, for you are good-looking!”
“So, is it my fault that you are ugly?”
James sneered and held her in his arms by grabbing her little hands. He lowered his head and rested his chin on her head.
Kara rolled his eyes in anger, “How could you look good if I’m beautiful. So, you owe me a great deal for making you look handsome.”
“Hey, can’t you see that we’re together now? So, even if I’m good-looking, it’s only you can enjoy it. What are you mad at?”
Kara blinked and suddenly understood something crucial. She looked at him excitedly.
“That sounds more like it.”
Her brown eyes became darker under the bright light as she raised her head slightly. He smiled and lowered his head to kiss her.
Kara turned around with her arms around his neck and kissed him back.
Since Kara took active, James naturally would seize the chance.
Only when they were both breathless did James let go of her and wipe her lips with his handkerchief.
Kara blushed, snatched his handkerchief and did it by herself. She hesitated and asked.
“Did your mom commit suicide?”
“People said so, but I didn’t believe them. Mom promised me that she would accompany me until I grew up.”
Kara didn’t know the things between them, so she had nothing to comment on.
“So, all these years, you have been investigating the reason for mother’s death?”
“Yes.”
Kara nodded. Although he couldn’t bring back his mother’s life, he needed to know why.
She remembered that when she went to the Hemming’s, James didn’t even look at Quentin and Keely.
But in front of the tombstone, he mourned for Vivian as his beloved mother.
Suddenly, James’s phone rang.
James picked the phone. It was John’s voice
“Sir, the Marshalls went to the hospital and tried to kill Salay.”
James suddenly stood up and walked a few steps.
“How is she now?”
“Salay is fine and I locked those people. Sir, what do you want me to do?”
“Chop off their hands and feet and send them to Jordon. And, keep an eye on the Marshalls.”
“Yes, Sir.”
James had already thought that Jordon would do something, so he let Nolan closely watch him. And knowing Nolan was busy with work, he also let John help.
A mantis was unaware of the oriole behind it when it was trying to catch a cicada.
Salay must know some secrets which made Jordon want to kill her as quickly as possible.
Before Vivian passed away, Salay and Veronica had visited her. He had questioned Veronica whose answer had no need to suspect. So, he spent years looking for Salay.
“James, is something wrong?”
Kara was worried and stared at him.
James hung up the phone and calmed down before he turned around.
He stood in silence in front of Vivian’s tombstone for a few seconds, but in the end, he walked away without saying a word.
Kara knew that James was not good at words, so, she didn’t move when he took her hands to leave.
“Mom, James misses you so much. We will come to see you again.”
“…”
When they returned to the villa, Kara asked Libby to cook a spicy dish for dinner.
James smiled when he saw the dish on the table. He knew that Kara had done it on purpose.
“Wow, I have never tried anything so spicy before. I’d like to try since I don’t have Chinese herb medicine now.”
“Are you quite sure?”
James gazed at her.
He just couldn’t recognize the taste of those dishes, but he could eat them anyway. However, it was hard to say whether she could eat them or not.
