CHAPTER TWENTY TWO
APRIL
“Is it that hard to contact her? Is it that difficult to convince her and get a signature?” Rowan bellowed as soon as I stepped into his house and that almost startled me.
Looking at him, he was seated on the couch frowning at the television and from his look and words, it was apparent he was mad at whoever he was speaking with on the phone. So, I walked in slowly and took my seat on the sofa.
“Goodness! What are you telling me? Are you guys even competent at all? First, you couldn’t get the right animation artist, I did that for you and now, just to convince her to sign our contract is a burden for you!” He shouted and I fluttered my lashes in surprise.
It was my first time seeing him that upset and it seemed like I was seeing another person entirely. I mean, why can’t he just speak to them calmly? Apparently, it was one of his employees and from the look of things, it seemed like he never takes any nonsense from them.
“You have till tomorrow morning. If I don’t get her signature tomorrow morning, then consider yourself jobless.” He ended the call after that and dumped the phone by his side.
He turned to me seconds later with a completely different expression that left me wondering if he was bipolar or something.
“You’re wearing a cat top today again. Do you really think you’re as cute as a cat?” He started in an entirely calm tone and I creased my brows.
“Are you bipolar?” I didn’t know when the words left my mouth until I heard it myself..
“What do you mean?”
“I mean one second your veins are popping and the next, you’re teasing me,” I pointed out and he chuckled.
“You’re not my employee and you don’t upset me. Shouting at someone like you can probably make you go into shock,” he replied with a smirk. Even with his response, he still wouldn’t stop teasing me.
“Do you really think I’m that weak?” I inquired and he huffed.
“Of course, are you strong?”
I eyed him.
“I saved you twice, remember?” I reminded him and he scoffed.
“That’s being brave and thanks for reminding me.”
“You should feel eternally indebted to me,” I pointed out and he smiled.
“If that’s what you want then… sorry,” he jested and I rolled my eyes yet again before getting on my feet.
“I should do what I’m here for.”
“Did it just cross your mind?” He mocked and I frowned at him before squatting down.
“When will my legs heal?” He questioned as soon as I placed my hand on the cast on his left leg.
“It’ll take about six to eight weeks,” I replied and his brows furrowed.
“Wait, what! I thought it’ll be just a month.”
“Well, you got your legs broken. You had to undergo surgery and your casts are still intact, you’re still using crutches and it’s only been slightly over two weeks so yeah, it takes that long for bones to heal. You can’t go to work after a month, if your bones heal fast, then you’ll leave the house after six weeks and if not…” I shrugged before continuing, “Then you’ll need to add one more month to your vacation.”
“Fuck!” He ran his palm across his face like he’d just heard some bad news or something.
“I hired you only for a month with the belief that I’ll start walking without casts or crutches and now you’re dashing my hope?” He sounded accusatory and I squeezed my face.
“Aren’t you trying to blame me? Really?”
“I’m not blaming you but…” He drawled out sounding sincere and I shook my head.
“Anyway, I thought the doctors already told you back when you were in the hospital and also I believed you only wanted me as your attending doctor for a month because you intend to change me or…”
He cut me short.
“And why would I change you?”
I shrugged.
“I don’t know. It could have been your plan all along and…”
“Even if I had that plan, do you think I’ll change you now? Why would I want someone else to take your place?”
I creased my brows. His words made me heart swell in a different way and I think I was reading too much meaning into it. He definitely isn’t attracted to me, right?
“I’m not in your head so I can’t know.”
“I can never change you, I mean, you’re good at your work and it’ll be a hassle getting someone like you,” he replied and that made me feel somehow. Is he trying to tell me…
“It’s hard to find someone to tease,” his words brought me out of my thought and I dashed him a scowl. He smirked at me and I pressed his legs.
“Ow,” he screamed and I batted my lashes.
“Oh, I didn’t know.”
“Of course. See, that that’s why I said it’s hard to find someone as childish as you. It’s fun to spend time with you,” he said and I tried to find those words annoying but instead, I found them exciting.
‘Okay, April, what’s wrong with you? Are you that stupid? What happened to your plan of focusing on work and forgetting about love? Why are you wavering? His little words shouldn’t be enough to touch your heart, he’s definitely a player,’ I told myself and that brought me back to reality.
“You bring out a different side of me. I think you’re an angel,” he teased and I scoffed.
“Just cut the crap, okay?”
“Are you affected by my words?” His lips spread into a wide smile revealing those cute dimples.
“Of course not! I know people like you.”
He lifted his brows.
“You know people like me? I doubt that. Are you sure you’ve interacted with someone as handsome and wealthy as me?” He asked with pride dripping in his tone and I rolled my eyes for the umpteenth time.
“Cocky much.”
He chuckled and silence fell after that. I couldn’t be more grateful as we both focused on playing our roles as doctor and patient.
About an hour later, I made my way out of the house and once I got to the door and placed my hand on the doorknob, his words stopped me.
“To be candid though, I love having you around. You lighten up my mood and I think you’re a very cute lady, fun to be with and exceptional,” he said and that brought a smile on my face.
Once I got to my house, I couldn’t stop thinking about his words.
Really, April? Get a grip of yourself!
