CHAPTER 20
ROWAN
I was bored out of my mind. Staying home all day doesn’t befit me at all. Since I didn’t have much work to do on my laptop that day, I was able to complete it early and remain jobless. I wasn’t a homebody at all so being home isn’t something I’ll get used to and now all that I could do was stare at the TV absentmindedly.
The sound from my phone brought me back to the present and I glanced at it by my side. With the name of my step-mother appearing on the screen or should I just refer her as my dad’s wife as I normally would since she never accepted Ava and I, my first thought was to ignore her call.
Like, why the hell would she call me? To confirm if I’m really alive or what? I picked up my phone and confirmed I’d turned off my location just to ensure she wouldn’t track me as if she never fell off the top of my suspect list, I contemplated on picking up the phone and on the second ring, I eventually did.
“I thought you wouldn’t pick it Rowan,” her elegant voice that always oozed of pride came from the other end and I paused the TV even though I wasn’t really paying any attention to me.
“Why did you call?”
“To confirm your well-being,” she replied and I scoffed. So predictable.
“Well now that you’ve done that, are you satisfied?”
“Maybe. I won’t be satisfied until you promise me you’ll give up your position for the rightful owners,” she replied and I shook my head. Just as expected, her main reason wasn’t to check my well being but to put in words for her children.
“So, does that mean you’re behind what happened to me at the AGM?”
“This isn’t something you should ask on phone. Anyway, you can think whatever but I’m not responsible for that. Speak to your dad, tell him to do the right thing instead of waiting for you to assume the position then I’m sure you won’t have any reason to hide and neither would your life be in danger.”
“Are you threatening me or you’re confessing?”
The guts of her. Her words fuelled in the anger in me and I couldn’t wait to get her convicted.
“Neither of the two. Just focus on your game company that’s doing well and leave what doesn’t belong to you. I believe you’re old enough to comprehend my words and…”
Her voice trailed off as a familiar voice which I instantly recognised as Adrian came from the background.
“Is that Rowan?” He questioned and I scrunched my brows.
“Rowan, how are you faring?” Adrian’s voice took over entirely.
“Good.”
“Edna wants to come check up on you but Alex said you aren’t staying in your place again. Did you move to a cave?”
“I doubt it. There’s no need for her to come visit.”
“Okay then. Take care of yourself so your dead body doesn’t assume the position of the CEO,” he said and I scoffed. Every word from him and his mother points fingers at them since they were the most eager for my death so I made a mental note to inform Bentley to watch their every day moves while investigating the case.
I ended the call after that and as soon as I dropped my phone by my side, the phone vibrated again.
Edna’s message popped up and I sighed. Ever since I returned home, she’d been disturbing me with calls and messages. At first I thought she only wanted to me know she still had my contact details but soon I was able to get into her head.
Just as expected, Edna was trying to get back with me just because she found out I’ll be richer than her husband soon. I’ll be more powerful and her greedy self would surely want to associate with the best one.
Can you just describe your new place? I’ve been going all and about and that makes me more worried. We both know I’m the only one that can take good care of you, just tell me where you are. I promise not to tell anyone and be district about it.
I ignored her message and turned off my phone just like I’ve been doing for the past few days and just as expected, her call came in. Ignoring it too, a knock came from the door and I furrowed my brows.
Could Edna have found this place?
“Who is it?” I asked on top of my voice as I caught sight of Maggie going to the door.
“Your one and only,” Ailey’s uttered a few seconds later as she strolled into the house and I heaved. Edna’s call came in once again and Ailey glanced at my side.
“Won’t you pick up?” She inquired and I shook my head.
“Why not?” She questioned while dropping the plastic bag in her hand on the centre table. I hope it doesn’t contain sweets again.
“It’s Edna.”
Her eyes popped.
“Edna? Why?” She took her seat beside me and glanced at my phone once again.
“I don’t know.”
“Maybe she wants to check up on you or something.”
“That’s not it. I believe she’s trying to get on my good side.”
“Why?”
I went ahead to explain Edna’s new concern to her and Ailey couldn’t help but scoff and boil in furt and as such she picked up Edna’s call and turned it on loudspeaker.
“Why the hell are you calling?” Ailey bellowed.
“And why the hell are you picking his calls? I thought you quit following him around, are you still playing this fake best friend around?” Edna’s voice drip of disdain and hate and Ailey turned blue.
“At least I’m still by his side. You should focus on being a good wife to that sneaky old thing you call your husband instead of looking for a way to get back into Rowan’s life.”
“Well, I was able to be in his life. What of you? All you do is follow him all about, scare his girlfriends off and ruin his life!” Edna bellowed and I tapped Ailey’s shoulders but she shrugged me off.
“You must be so proud of your terrible self. Get this into your dirty thick skull, you chose Adrian the day you agreed to marry him, you can never get back to Rowan. Have so shame and be a good wife. Goodluck enjoying your stupid marriage!” She ended the call immediately and dumped the phone on the centre table before getting up.
“I can’t believe that snake had the guts to call you, who does she think she is?” Edna fumed while pacing here and about. She does it whenever she gets upset.
“Don’t worry about her.”
“Why won’t I? She’s planning to hurt you again.”
I shook my head.
“No need to worry, she can’t get to me.”
“Then why haven’t you gotten in a relationship in the last three years?”
“And you?” I teased and she flipped her hair in annoyance.
“I’m being serious here.”
“Well, I haven’t found the right one. I should be serious with my life now,” I told her and she sighed.
“The right one could be around you but you’re too blind to realise,” she replied.
“What do you mean?”
“I brought doughnuts and chips, you care for it?” She changed the topic quickly and shifted her focus to the plastic bag she came with while I only stared at her in confusion.
