CHAPTER 16
APRIL
The loud screech of the alarm woke me up that morning and in annoyance I struck its head dead. Sophia groaned beside me as she tossed to my side and I pushed her away immediately. I didn’t realise my push had much impact until I heard her groan and found her on the floor.
“Ow, I think I hurt my spine,” Sophia complained and I got out of bed immediately and rushed to her.
“Oh my goodness! I’m so sorry,” I apologized while trying to pull her up.
“Is this your way of waking me up because you know the alarm won’t work on me?” She joked and that made me feel at ease. She wasn’t mad at me and she was just bring dramatic.
“Of course not. Are you okay, though?” I inquired as I helped her sit on the bed side.
She shook her head and I furrowed my brows.
“I’ll only be okay if you prepare tea for me and also help me pick my clothes for the day,” she replied in a mischievous tone and I shook my head.
“Just get out of bed, we need to get to work,” I told her before walking away leaving her all to her dramas.
After my morning hygiene, I walked out of the bathroom and Sophia walked back into the room at that moment. Her eyes went down my body before it widened.
“You’ve taken your bath?”
“Of course. What have you been doing since?”
“Preparing breakfast.”
“That’s great but you need to hurry up or else we’ll get to work late,” I told her and she bobbed her head before rushing to the bathroom. Looking down at the bed, I noticed she’d picked out a brown jumpsuit and that gave me the idea of what to wear that morning. Looking through my closet, I brought out a brown frilled dress.
It was while I was eating the toast that Sophia made that she joined me on the dining table and soon, we made our way out of the house.
“Hi, April,” I heard a familiar voice greet as soon as I stepped out of the house. Turning to the direction of the voice, I came face to face with the lady that visited Rowan the other day.
Wait, did she spend the night in his place? It was just seven in the morning and she didn’t look like someone who was just coming to greet him and neither did she look like she came here to get something. She was still in a comfortable cloth that felt like she wanted to go to the grocery store down there to get something. Why does it even concern me?
“Good morning,” I replied.
“Are you coming here or you’re off to work?” She inquired with a small smile. She seemed like a very pleasant lady.
“Work,” I replied and she bobbed her head.
“See you later,” she said before walking away.
“Is she your neighbour?” Sophia questioned and I shook my head.
“Not really,” I answered before making my way to the elevator. It wasn’t here yet so we had to wait and I stood beside Ailey who seemed busy on her phone but raised her head when she noticed my shadow beside her.
“You’re here,” she started and I nodded.
“I have something to ask you,” she continued and I raised my brows. What could it be?
“Go ahead.”
“Do you know any reliable psychologist? Not the one in a big hospital like yours, maybe something like a clinic but a great one?” She asked and Matilda came to my mind immediately. She was the perfect description of what she wanted.
“Yeah, I do.”
Ailey’s face lit up.
“Oh really?”
“Yes.” The elevator door slid open and we all walked into it. After Sophia pressed the button, Ailey turned to me.
“So, how can I get through this person?”
“I’ll give you her address and contact details then you guys can talk.”
“Okay, thanks a lot.”
*********
“Dr. April,” I heard Dr. Barron call as soon as I got up from my seat. We were the only ones in the common room for the orthopaedic department as others left a few minutes ago for lunch but since I still had some things to look into, I stayed back and now my stomach wouldn’t stop grumbling.
The toast I had in the morning wasn’t enough at all so there was no way I wouldn’t try to get something to eat as I wouldn’t have any other chance to do that and I’ll be getting off work late.
So I wrapped up what I was doing quickly with the intention of going to the cafeteria to get something but Dr. Barron’s voice stopped me.
“Yes,” I replied and his face slipped into a smile.
“You should feed your stomach,” he stated and I nodded.
“I know that.”
“I made some pancakes this morning, would you like some?” He offered as he pointed at the lunch bag beside his chair.
It would be nice to just sit down and eat the waffles while completing the work so I’ll return to my office quickly but then knowing Dr. Barron, he would certainly think I’ve finally opened up to his love antics.
“Oh, thanks but I’m not really a fan of pancakes. I don’t think it’ll even be enough for my stomach,” I replied as politely as I could.
“Don’t tell me this tiny body of yours consumes a lot? How come you’re still this way? Is there any secret behind it?” He jested. To him, it must have been a joke but it was annoying to me.
“I’ll get going,” I replied with a tight-lipped smile before taking the first step but he was quick to grab my hand.
“Why does it seem like you’re avoiding me? Am I too direct?” He inquired and I almost rolled my eyes.
“I’m not avoiding you. We’re in the same department, remember?”
“But we’re not in the same office. We only meet here,” he pointed out and I pursed my lips.
“Of course we can’t be in the same office. Can you let go of my hand now?”
“I heard your boyfriend or should I say ex? Came here with the lady he dumped you for, it’s all over the hospital, don’t you think you should move on by getting together with me?” He proposed and I scoffed.
“I don’t need you to move on,” I concluded before jerking my hand off and then making my way of the common room. How annoying!
