CHAPTER TEN
APRIL
“It’s only been a week and I don’t think I’ll get into a relationship anytime soon,” I told them and they both gave the you-must-be-joking look. Sensing, they’ll want to probe further on the topic, I glanced at my phone and noticed it was twenty minutes until none so, I called their attention to that and Joann jumped on her feet immediately.
She headed to her room while Matilda got on her feet and straightened her green body con gown while I cleared the almost empty table. Joann soon returned with a kimono over her clothes and a small envelope bag. We walked out of the house and got into Joann’s Toyota Highlander car; one her parents had gifted her for her last birthday. She drove us to the fair amidst talks and thirty minutes later, we got to the location.
The first spot we headed to was the animal race which was one of those activities we enjoyed most, it was actually the one Matilda always looked forward to maybe because her parents owned a farm and she’d gotten used to the animals. Horse-racing was just starting when we got there and Matilda’s excitement couldn’t be contained as she screamed her lungs out and bet her money on a white horse even though it was needless. The race started a few minutes later and I could say Matilda’s cheer was the loudest as the horse she’d bet on had started leading the race.
“I have good insight,” Matilda uttered when the white horse was proclaimed as the winner.
“Yeah, we know that,” I replied.
“You can also be likened to an animal, it’s not far-fetched, that brown horse looks like it’s your twin,” Joann joked and I erupted into laughter but Matilda dashed her a glare.
“Let’s get some hotdogs,” Joann suggested as she pointed at a stall amidst several stalls that sold foods.
“Of course you would want that. You glutton!” Matilda fired back while Joann stuck out her tongue at her before hurrying to stall while we followed behind her.
“This is so nice,” I moaned as I chewed on the hotdogs.
“Yeah, it is,” they both uttered in unison.
“Where should we go next?” I questioned as my eyes roamed around the large area.
“There,” I heard Joann say as she pointed at a hut.
“Is it not for traditional stuffs?” Matilda questioned and Joann shrugged.
“I’m not sure, we won’t know until we go there.” And we did, it wasn’t where they sold traditional stuffs but a place for psychic reading, I wanted us to turn back but since Joann wanted us to try it out and Matilda believed it would be fun, we decided to go in.
“You lost the love of your life last year,” the old woman said immediately we took our seat in front of her. We all exchanged surprising looks and that made me believe it could actually be fun. I mean, how did she know Joann lost her fiance over a year ago? He’d died just a few days after their engagement and it had really taken God’s intervention for Joann not to end up in a psychiatric hospital. Joann wasn’t herself until a few months ago when her excitement returned and she came out of grief.
“Wow, she’s good,” Matilda whispered but it was audible enough for us to hear her.
The old woman with grey hair turned to me but I avoided her gaze.
“Your love left you last week and you’ve decided to close your heart,” she said and my mouth opened in surprise while Matilda quickly adjusting her sitting position beside me while waiting for the woman to talk about her but unfortunately, she didn’t.
When our session with the woman started, Matilda was actually the first person to ask her a question.
“What should I know about my love life?” she asked and I shared a look with Joann. What else did she want to know about her love life? She was basically the luckiest person in love.
The woman stared at her for some seconds before telling her to open her right palm and Matilda did just as told.
“Nothing,” the woman replied and Matilda raised her brows.
“What do you mean nothing?”
“Your love life is filled with sweetness and you know everything you need to know about it.”
“But…” Matilda protested.
“You’ll be sealing your relationship soon,” the woman cut her short and Matilda retracted her hand from hers.
“You mean we’ll end things?”
The woman shook her head.
“The opposite,” she concluded before turning to Joann.
“Will I be able to love someone again?” Joann questioned.
“Yes, it’ll happen soon,” the woman replied without giving it much thought and a small smile slipped out of Joann’s face. I do hope it could be possible too because Joann already stated she would remain single forever.
“What is my path to a happy and successful relationship?” I questioned since that was actually my problem. I’d never experienced both, it was either the relationship lasted for a short while or I wasn’t happy in it. The woman stared at me, her gaze was so intense that I felt she was seeing my soul.
“You’re already on that path,” she finally said and I raised my brows.
“What do you mean?” I asked in a confused tone.
“You’ve met that person,” she replied and I creased my brows. What does that mean?
