Amelia POV
I sluggishly shred the steak in my plate, “Are you okay?” asked Mr. Samuel, I lifted my head to look at him and breathe out deeply. “Do you think granny would grant my request if I should ask her?” He stared at my face for a moment, then he raised his glass of water and drank from it. “Let’s just hope for the best Amelia, granny has done enough for us already” He reminded calmly. I nodded honestly, “Of course I’m aware of all what granny has done for us, me particularly. But you should also know I’m not ready for marriage, I firmly wish to go to college, is it too much to ask?” Tears rushed to my eyes while I talked, Mr. Samuel dropped his cutlery, he scampered his seat backward and got on his feet. “Let me ask this question” He says while he swiveled around to seat next to me at the table. “Which would you prefer, get married to granny only grandson, or you go back to your mom’s house?” He flung the question to me, I slowly transferred my gaze from the jar on the table to his not-too-old face. He put up his brows as he watches my face, I willingly let the tears roll down my cheeks, “I’ll be in my room” I managed to utter before getting on my feet, “Amelia” He called after me, but I was already out of the dining room.
As soon as I entered my room, I sprawled to the bed, leaving the door wide open. “God why, this is not favorable. I really want to go to college” My voice throbbed as I whimpered softly. I don’t wish to go back to my mom, I choose to remain here with Mr. Samuel. We both live serenely with the two maids granny assigned to work here. Now, I wear the best dresses, eat only what I feel like, have fun with Mr. Samuel and the girls. We talk, we play games, crack jokes. I must say this is the kind of life I’ve been yearning for, except for the fact that I’m still not allowed to do anything in the kitchen neither the house chores. However, the life I’ve always wanted is not obtained till I go to college. My only dream is to become a lawyer, I never dreamt of an arranged marriage before. But if I should say no to granny, I would be an ingrate, even Mr. Samuel would be so discontented…
I felt a brisk stroke on my leg, causing my eyes to flung open. When did I fall asleep? She had her usual broad smile on her face as she stares down at me with pure affection. “Granny” my voice turned out bleak, so I manage to clear my throat while I prop myself up. “How are you doing, dear?” She asked in her motherly tone like. I bounced my head twice, “I’m good, how are you too? You didn’t tell us you’ll be coming around today” She moved closer to me on the bed and asked, “Do you really want to go to college?” my lips curled up in anxiety. Why is she asking that, all of a sudden, has she and Mr. Samuel discussed it? I lowered my head, my mood was already in a contradiction. How would she feel if I say yes, and if I should say no, then my fantasy won’t be coming true. She tenderly held my hand then I lifted my head, “You’ll go to college” She announced, my eyes protruded. “What?” She chuckled out softly, then says, “Isn’t that what you’ve always wanted?” Tears pour down from my eyes as I heaved myself up and went to embrace her. “Thank you so much granny, you’re an angel, you’re indeed a Godsent. I pray may God continue to bless and reward you for good” I babbled in her chest, I could feel her smiling as she strokes my hair. “It’s okay dear” She says as she pulled away from the hug. “The good news is that I already arranged everything, so you’re resuming tomorrow” She proclaimed, and I could feel the massive joy that leaped in my heart. I jumped on my feet and went straight on my knees, “Granny…” my voice throbbed with emotions. “No Amelia, please stand up and sit” She hauled me up, I sat beside her and hugged her tightly again. I just couldn’t control the happiness. “But you have to promise one thing, Amelia” I slowly pulled out and stared into her eyes, she was not smiling anymore. I gulped down, “Promise you what, granny?” I pronounced in a low voice. “You wouldn’t fall in love with some guy in the college, except for my grandson” She teased and we both cracked up.
My heart couldn’t contain the happiness in my heart as I stare around my new environment in awe. Everywhere looks beautiful. A&M University is rated among the top universities in the whole Texas, after I learnt from her yesterday that this was where I’m coming, I’ve been trying to persuade her, I mean their fees is far too high, but she wouldn’t compel. So, I had to agree, who wouldn’t agree, though? Right now, I’m searching for the faculty of law, though I have a map with me, but I guess this school is so great for a newbie like me. I darted my eyes around, walking like a homeless pigeon. I really don’t know which of the direction to follow, I’m confused. Funny enough, not even a single person in sight but me. Suddenly, I heard a deep paces moving toward my way. I quickly spun around to behold a boy, no, it was a man. He got to where I was standing, his sturdy body was crouching above me. Oh no, he is so huge. He narrowed his eyes at me, “Do you want me to throw you out of my way?” He growled, menacingly. I blinked my eyes rapidly before taking a few steps off. He then strode away, I didn’t think twice before jogging after him, “Hey, Mr. please hold on, I need your help” He didn’t stop, but kept on with his pace. “I’ve been searching for the faculty of law, but I can’t seem to locate it, could you please help me?” I requested, panting softly. He didn’t reply me again, I brushed the strands of my hair away from my face and yelled, “are you deaf?!” He halted his steps abruptly, and I almost bumped into his chest. “What did you just say?” He questioned, gruffly. I breathe out deeply then scoffed, “Don’t even try to intimidate me right now, I was asking you a question, if you cannot show me the direction then the least you could do is to provide a response” I blurted out, his brows folded as he check me from bottom to up.
After gazing at my face for a long time, he turned around and walked away, without saying a word to me. “Hey!” I shouted, he didn’t stop, then I watched his back till he was out of sight. Gosh! Why do I have to encounter with such a dunderhead on my first day of resumption?
