HER scent lingered in the air and he did not know, nor did he care, how long he sat there inhaling it. What was wrong with him? He shook his head furiously and alerted his security to bring the next applicant. He was disappointed to find it was a man. He had never pictured a man as his assistant, but he was not discriminating against his own gender. Allen was just used to working with women.
He didn’t even bother to go through his file because he knew he simply couldn’t hire him. Even the way he dressed appalled him; his shirt was dirty and his shoes brought in nothing but dirt and mud. Allen’s nose scrunched with disdain. He asked the applicant the exact same questions he had asked Anna. He was a lot more professional than Anna, if he were to be honest, but his mind had already been made up. Allen’s interview with him didn’t last more than two minutes, and he was thrilled at that.
He sighed with relief when the man finally left his office. A part of him felt bad that Anna’s scent was gone and replaced with the filthy man’s. Allen took out the air freshener from his drawer and sprayed random spots in his office. Even though the scent was better, it still wasn’t Anna’s.
God, why was he obsessed with the perfume of a woman he had just met?
He informed security to bring in the next applicant. He waited for her to arrive. It was taking too long. He opened her file and went through it. A frown pulled at his lips when he realized there was no photo of this applicant.
“Sofia Perez…” Allen read quietly to himself. The resume was really scanty; there was barely any information in it.
That’s when the door to his office opened. He looked up to meet the eyes of his last applicant, and he prayed to God above that he was dreaming.
“Jesus Christ.”
The woman standing in a skin-tight black dress smiled seductively at the CEO. She swayed her round hips teasingly as she strutted towards him. “Missed me?” She asked, and Allen was on his feet in a flash. He backed away from the familiar woman, but she was not giving him that opportunity.
“What are you doing here? How did you get past security?” Allen demanded, his anger building at the realization that his mentally deranged ex was standing right in front of him.
She pouted her blood-red lips and tilted her head to the side, “Come on, baby. I can’t believe you had security to keep me away. You know I would never hurt you.” She said it as though she were speaking to a child.
Allen balled his fists and his jaw clenched. He was going to fire each and every member of his security team. He needed to hire better ones because he had specifically instructed them to never, under any circumstances, let this mad woman anywhere near my company.
“Get out of here, Evelyn.” Allen said through clenched teeth, and Evelyn twirled some of her golden curls in her manicured fingers.
“But I miss you, baby.”
“It’s been a year,” Allen deadpanned.
“And I haven’t forgotten about you ever since,” she stated, and Allen sighed with annoyance. His anger for the men on guard grew every second he was forced to breathe the same air as his ex.
“I don’t want to see you, Evelyn. Just leave, move on and stop bothering me,” Allen said, with annoyance in his tone. He strolled towards his desk, but she blocked his path.
“I am sorry I pressured you into marrying me. I understand if you are not ready, and you can take your time if you want, but please-”
“It’s not just that, Evelyn. I can’t stand you. You are self-centered and careless. You never cared about me. You don’t care about anyone but yourself and your career.” Allen spat, and Evelyn appeared to be on the verge of breaking into tears. She was exactly the type of woman she was. She was a model, but Allen always considered her an actress. She was not only dramatic, but she was also a talented liar.
“I was new to the fashion industry back then, and I didn’t want anything to mess that up. You should have been supportive instead of ending things! ” She defended, and it was clear as day she hadn’t listened to a word Allen had said.
“Get out of my office, Evelyn.”
“I know you miss me, Allen. I can see the misery in your eyes, and I am sorry if I ever hurt you, just give me another chance.” she pleaded, coming even closer to him. She came to a stop right in front of him. Slowly, she intertwined her fingers with his and looked up at him suggestively. The lust in her eyes was clear as she whispered, “I miss having you between my legs. I know you miss those nights we spent entangled beneath the sheets.”
Allen had heard enough.
Without warning, he grabbed Evelyn’s wrist harshly and dragged her out of his office. He threw the door to his office open and flung her out carelessly. She stumbled and nearly fell on her face, but was able to get her feet back. She looked at Allen with bewilderment and horror, “How dare you lay your hands on me in such a manner?”
He did not bother to give her a response. His dark eyes met those of his security guards, and they gulped. Allen pointed a finger at them before redirecting it to Evelyn, “Get her out of here. and when you do, don’t bother coming back because you are fired!”
Allen did not miss the way the blood drained from their faces before turning on his heel and slamming the door to his office shut. He inhaled deeply, trying desperately to calm his boiling blood. His cellphone rang, and he picked it up. Apparently, he had a few more interviews to conduct. He sighed tiredly and the rest of the day went by in a flash. None of the applicants had caught his eyes like Anna.
He sighed with relief when the last one left and quickly went searching for Anna’s resume. Once he found it, he checked the time on his watch. Thankfully, it was still work hours. He sent her an email stating she had gotten the job, and he hated the way he smiled when she sent a smiley emoji.
