Chapter 27: Refusal

Book:The Warlord Is Back Published:2024-5-1

Shortly after, Robin drove Porsche back home. On the way, he couldn’t help wondering what Nina had used the borrowed 100, 000 dollars for.
He decided to ask Nina personally. However, he wouldn’t tell Elise for the time being. If Elise knew Nina had borrowed 100, 000 dollars from the usury and owed the usurer over 600, 000 dollars, Nina would be doomed.
Back at Houry’s Villa, Robin found Nina had arrived home. Seeing him, Nina glared at him to remind him not to expose what had happened earlier. Robin nodded at her in response.
After dinner, when Nina was about to return to her bedroom and brushed past Robin, he whispered, “Why did you owe them so much money? 600, 000 is a lot of money.”
Nina’s expression changed dramatically.
“Follow me.”
Nina asked Robin to follow her into the backyard. Frowning, she asked, “Did you know everything?”
“Ehn.”
“OK. Don’t tell anyone. Once you did, I would hate you for the rest of my life. I would make a fuss, and my sister wouldn’t be with you. You know how much she dotes on me.”
Nina pointed at Robin with a warning glare and left without telling him where she had spent the money.
The money meant nothing to Robin, no matter whether it was 100, 000, 600, 000, or 600 million dollars. Besides, Robin had made extra money earlier. However, he was worried about her as Nina was his sister-in-law.
The following day.
The board of directors’ general meeting was held. Elise looked spirited, wearing a delicate suit, emanating a unique temperament.
Holding the signed contract with self-confidence, she said, “Robin, go with me.”
“No problem.”
Robin didn’t refuse. Since the proposal ceremony, Elise started to accept him. He could feel it was because of their daughter.
It would only take some time for Elise to fall in love with him. He knew she had been hurt deeply by the incident seven years ago.
After arriving on the top floor, Elise pushed the door of the conference room open and entered. Gordon sat in the host’s seat with his eyes closed, his hands on his walking stick. David stood beside him.
They still let Elise sit in the corner.
“I heard you were sick yesterday, Grandpa. Are you feeling better now?” Elise asked Gordon with concern.
Gordon was absent from the Robin-Sophia Group’s opening ceremony.
“Grandpa didn’t go to the ceremony because he went to pick up my sister and brother-in-law,” David explained.
Suddenly, two people entered the conference room. The woman had curly hair, wearing a red dress, looking enchanting.
“Snowy Houry?”
Elise frowned at her.
Snowy Houry was David’s elder sister and Elise’s cousin. However, they never got along since childhood.
“Oops! Elise, you’re back? You also brought your homeless husband here. Why did you bring a beggar to Lands Corporation?”
Snowy darted at Robin in disdain.
“This is my fiance, Hank Lope. He’s 27 but has become a captain of Fort Western. Compared to your husband, he should be a hundred times better.”
Snowy clung to the man next to her. He was 5’9″, standing upright, and wearing a suit. He looked like a handsome gentleman.
Snowy was indeed complacent. Since childhood, Elise won against her in every aspect. Elise was the campus belle when she studied at the University of Stillwater. Before turning 20, Elise had already founded Lands Corporation. Therefore, Snowy longed to win against Elise.
Finally, she won. At least her fiance was a captain, and Robin was just good for nothing.
She believed others could also tell it.
“Congratulations!” Elise uttered stiffly.
She had to admit to being defeated in this aspect.
“Grandpa, it’s the general meeting of the board today. Let’s talk shop. I’ve gained the Robin-Sophia Group’s first project. According to your promise, I can return to be the chairwoman of the board. Please keep your word.”
Elise put the contract on the table.
“I will definitely keep my word,” Gordon slowly opened his eyes and uttered.
Elise was delighted. However, he added, “But I didn’t promise the person who could first gain this project to be the chairman. Snowy came back with Hank. With Hank’s identity, they could have also obtained this contract. Besides, Hank still serves in the military. I’m sure he’ll do a better job than you.”
“Elise, for Lands Corporation’s interest, you should leave the opportunity to Snowy and David.”
Gordon drawled affirmatively, giving Elise no chance to change his mind.
“Leave it to them?”
Elise was taken aback.
“Right. I’ve called Mr. Jordan of the Robin-Sophia Group. Later, we’ll sign a new contract. Mr. Houry was right. If we took care of the project, we would create more profits for Lands Corporation,” Hank echoed.
He had roughly figured out what had happened. Since he was Snowy’s fiance, he definitely had taken Snowy’s side.
“But I…”
Elise exhaled in disbelief, staring at Gordon. “Grandpa, why are you doing this to me? I’m also your biological granddaughter?”
“What do you mean? I’ve made the decisions for our company’s sake. You worked hard to gain the project. I’ll add extra 100 dollars to your monthly salary to thank you. Now, dismiss!”
Gordon paced the floor with the walking stick and dismissed the meeting.
“I didn’t expect Master Gordon to be so wise to reject Elise Houry. He even offered her extra 100 dollars in her monthly salary. What can 100 dollars do?”
“100 dollars! I’m impressed. TSK. TSK…”
“Master Gordon was indeed brilliant. I could tell he had never wanted to let Elise become the chairwoman again. As we know, he prefers his grandson more than granddaughters.”
The directors talked ironically while leaving the conference room. Their words paled Elise, who clenched her fists tightly.
She had been working hard to gain the project, but her effort was in vain.
Gordon had the final say and eliminated her contributions.
Right then, Snowy approached Elise with Hank. Narrowing her gaze, she suggested, “Elise, we’ll go to sign the new contract this afternoon. Shall we have lunch together? I heard there was a French restaurant nearby the company.”
She wanted to show off to Elise and humiliate her.
Elise didn’t have the mood. Shaking her head, she refused, “No…”
Suddenly, Robin stood next to her and gripped her hand. Nodding at Snowy, he agreed, “OK. Thanks. We haven’t had French cuisine for a while.”
