Chapter 43: A Fatal Blow

Book:Love Like Arsenic Published:2024-5-1

When I finally found a chance and implored Quan Shaoze to let me see my brother, he turned me down without even thinking about it.
He left me no time to say anything more before he walked into his study and slammed the door.
Looking at the closed door, I suddenly felt myself slipping into the meltdown mode.
“If I keep begging him today, will he lose his temper?” I wondered.
I didn’t dare to probe his attitude, so I had to suppress my anger and grief before turning to leave with a heavy heart.
The grief in my heart increased with each step I took.
I persuaded myself to be patient and discuss with him about it tomorrow.
After managing to calm myself down, I pinned all my hope on tomorrow, though I knew the chances of him granting my request were slim.
One day was as long as I could wait.
The next day, Quan Shaoze refused me again with a poker face.
As if he was a little impatient about my persistence, he frowned slightly and shot me a cold glare before heading for his company.
I was still locked up by him in his villa.
This almost drove me crazy. I was so angry that I couldn’t help shivering.
I would go to the hospital to see my brother regardless of the consequences!
After making up my mind, I got changed and put up a light make-up before walking to Quan Shaoze’s personal doctor, who had been helping me with my health recently.
I was sure he knew which hospital my brother was in, so I put it straight and pleaded him to tell me the hospital address.
However, like Quan Shaoze, he made it clear that it was impossible.
Looking at his serious, resolute look, I was overtaken by a blast of despair and a sense of helplessness, which almost made me collapse.
Shivering all over at the overwhelming grief, I burst into tears.
After taking a few deep breathes, I finally held my tears back before I knelt in front of the doctor and begged him to tell me the hospital address.
To my shame, my tears welled up again.
I could do anything to see my brother. I begged the doctor, leaving my last bit of self-esteem behind.
The old man was so shocked that he immediately reached out and was about to help me up, but I refused to rise to my feet. Seeing the determination in my eyes, he finally gave in with a sigh.
As Quan Shaoze wasn’t at the villa, after getting the address from the doctor, I got rid of the servants on the pretext of using the restroom and successfully ran out from the back door.
I arrived at the hospital a while later. After providing my brother’s name and his health conditions, the receptionist found his records soon and told me that he was in room 504, the fourth ward on the left of the fifth floor.
There were so many people crowded in front of the lift, so I had to wait a few meters away from it. Burning with anxiety, I decided to take the stairs to the fifth floor.
At the thought that I was going to see my brother at once, I felt my heart pounding with joy for the first time in these days.
However, when I had just reached the fourth floor, I overheard the conversation between two doctors by accident, which suddenly froze me on the spot.
“The patient in ward 504 has no vital signs. Now you can inform his family to make arrangements for the funeral.”
They passed me while talking. After being seized in trance for a few seconds, I suddenly rushed down the stairs and stopped them, questioning what they were talking about.
As soon as they confirmed that I didn’t mishear it and told me the patient’s name, my brain immediately went blank.
My head buzzed and I couldn’t hear anything except for what the doctors said echoing out in my mind.
“My brother is dead?”
“Dead!?”
“No! That’s impossible!”
