CHAPTER FIFTY-FOUR.
Adele on the other hand had no idea things were heating up on Jamal’s side and were about to cross over to her side as well. She went to work everyday, did her work diligently, had a good time with her colleagues and did not fail to put Grace in her place every single time she tried to overdo things or speak rudely to her.
It was needless to say, but Grace hated her to her bones, but Adele cared less.
That afternoon, she went over to the documentary to get a pack of A4 sheets that they would be using in the office and on her way back, she tripped on the staircase and fell, rolling down back to the floor she came from and that resulted in her fainting. The people who witnessed that happened got alarmed.
“Adele!” One of the workers shouted in shock as he rushed over to her still body. Others joined him and when they noticed that she was unconscious, they carried her to the healthcare unit of the conglomerate.
Sean, who noticed the commotion asked what was going on and the moment he was told the person who just had the accident was Adele, he did not hesitate to phone Jamal to tell him about it.
The moment Jamal heard the news, he fled his office. He went over to the health care unit where Adele had been taken to the emergency ward.
Because he did not want anyone getting suspicious, he ordered that the entire part of the hospital be blocked so no one can get in or go out. It was just him , Adele and the doctors working on her.
“Mr. King!” One of the doctor’s called in shock when he saw him pacing about in the corridor.
“Doctor! What happened to her?” He asked panicking and the doctor, who was dumbfounded, was short of words to say.
He was so confused at that moment to see their boss getting worked up over a common employee.
“Answer me!” He scolded and the doctor shook in fright as he took a step backwards.
“She… She…” he stammered in fear. “She has been taken to the emergency ward and the other doctors and nurses are working on her.” The doctor replied in fear and his soul walked out of his body when Jamal inched closer to him, frowning like a betrayed Mafia Lord.
“If anything bad happens to that lady, I will end your life and that of every other person in that emergency ward. So if I were you, I’d do all I can to make her wake up sound. Go and tell the others.”
The terrified man quickly scampered away into the emergency ward and Jamal kept pacing about, praying in his heart.
When Sean told him about the accident, he almost lost his mind over the phone. He had to calm himself down as normal as he walked all the way to the health unit just so no one would suspect anything fishy.
“Why the hell did she take the take the stairs in the first place when there is a fucking elevator!” He cursed angrily. “Why is she so stubborn?”
And that was how he kept pacing about and cursing for the next thirty minutes till the door to the emergency room opened up and two doctors walked out.
“Mr. King.” The doctor who had spoken to him previously called as he approached the furious looking CEO.
“Yes, Doctor Kane. How is she?” He asked, concerned and the doctor’s smile broadened.
“Miss Mackenzie is doing just fine. She went unconscious because she hit a bad spot, but luckily, there was no damage to her brain or spine. She has no broken bones either. Her bruises have been treated as well. All she needs is proper rest and in less than no time, she will be fine again.”
“Oh… thank you very much, doctor.” Jamal thanked the doctor and let out a sigh of relief.
He didn’t know what he was going to do if anything serious had happened to her.
“So, can I see her?”
“Yes, you can. Please come with me.” Said the doctor as he left the way to Adele’s ward.
The doctor was still very confused as to what was going on. The lady he had just attended to was no one he knew from the Dominick family and it was known that Mr. King had no wife. He was baffled at the fact that his big boss was so worked up over a girl who seemed to be an ordinary employee like him in the company.
He finally concluded that there was something fishy going on.
When they got into the ward, they met Adele sitting upright on the hospital bed with a bag of drip attached to a cannula on her left hand.
Jamal’s heart beat accelerated when he saw the gloomy look on her face and the dark circles under her eye.
“Adele!” He called in a worried tone as he walked further in the room.
“Jamal.” Adele called out as well and the two doctors exchanged confused looks.
They were on a first name basis and that could only mean that there was indeed something going on between them.
“Are you alright?’
“Jamal, what the hell are you doing here?” Adele whispered harshly as she looked from the doctors to Jamal who was now frowning m.
“What do you mean by what I am doing here?” He asked, annoyed. “Sean told me what happened and I couldn’t just stay in my office and do nothing!” Jamal whispered back and Adele rolled her eyes hard.
“That’s why you decided to come here and risk exposing our status? Look at how shocked the doctors are. They must be wondering why the big boss got worked up over a mere employee! There are going to start spreading rumours and you know that’s something I don’t want!” She whispered again and that’s when Jamal’s mind clicked.
He bit his lips hard as he gave Adele a guilty look.
“I didn’t even think of that.” He whispered back to her.
The two doctors standing by the door were even more dumbfounded as they watched Adele and Jamal whisper harshly to each other.
That was the first time they were seeing their big boss acting so casually. That only went a long way to confirm the fact that he was indeed close with the girl.
Jamal, who realised his mistake and wanted to remedy it, cleared his throat as he turned to face the doctor.
“Doctor Kane.” He called quietly.
“Yes, Mr. King!” Doctor answered firmly, taking a rigid posture.
“I need you to summon everyone who was in the emergency with you this instant.” He ordered and the Doctor quickly bowed his head in agreement.
“Yes Sir, I will do that right away!” He said and left the office.
“What do you plan to do?” Adele whispered the question to him and he turned to look at her, smiling.
“You will know soon.” Was all he said and Adele rolled her eyes.
She didn’t want to push it because she knew she would not answer anyway.
Soon, Doctor Kane and three other girls, who seemed to be the nurses, walked in and joined the other doctor at the door. Now, there were two doctors and three nurses.
“Here we are, Mr. King.” The doctor announced and Jamal nodded his head. He turned on his chair to face them. He crossed his left leg over the right and his arms on his chest, giving them all very intense looks.
“First, I want to thank you all for your hard work. Thank you for making sure Miss Mackenzie is fine again. You will be greatly rewarded for that.”
“Thank you Mr. King.” Doctor Kane answered on their behalf.
“You are welcome. And for the second, it’s a threat. I can see on your faces that you all are shocked to see me here, getting worked up about Miss Mackenzie. I want that to end between us. No word of me coming here to see her or of me being acquainted with her has to spread. If it does, you all will bear the consequences and you know what that is.”
“Mr. King. We promise not to let anything out. We swear on our lives not to do so. Please!” Doctor Kane pleaded while the others just nodded and Jamal smiled.
“I’m counting on you to keep your promise. You can leave now and make sure to check on her from time to time.”
“Yes sir!” They all answered and left. Now, it was just Jamal and Adele left in the ward, so he turned to face her again.
“You are such a bully, Jamal!”
“Look who is running her mouth right now! I only did that because of you. If it was all left to me, I would have told them you are my wife and given them the go ahead to spread the good news. Don’t act like you aren’t a part of this. If I’m a bully, it’s because of you!” Jamal explained fiercely.
“Hey! Don’t put the blame on me, if you hadn’t shown up here and acted like a lost soul, we wouldn’t be in this position!” Adele fired back.
“And if you weren’t stubborn such a stubborn fellow, you would have taken the elevator, not the stairs and all of this would not have happened! However we want to look at this, the blame goes to you, not me!” He flatly denied and Adele’s eyes opened wide in shock.
“Hey!” Adele scolded him. “How dare you argue with a sick person? You are supposed to take all the blame and pet me instead!” She cried stubbornly and Jamal’s heart melted.
He paused and looked at her like he was lost.
“Pet you?” He asked, almost inaudibly.
“You know what? Just leave! You must have a pile of work waiting for you upstairs. Go back to your office and get on with your work, I’ll go home once I’m done taking this bag of drip.”
“It’s so easy for you to say it all the time isn’t it? “Just leave!”” Jamal repeated her words and chuckled, tears shimmering in his eyes. “Well, not today, love. I will stay with you till the drip is done, and I will take you home.”
“I don’t want you to stay here and I don’t want you to take me home!” She retorted and another argument was born.
All they ever did was fight.
