CHAPTER FORTY-SEVEN.
Adele arrived at the conglomerate at exactly eight am. The moment she got out of the car, the valet showed up and she gave her car keys to him. She looked up at the mighty skyscraper standing before her and she didn’t know whether to frown or smile.
Jamal was definitely doing well for himself, but he was ruining her life in every possible way.
She stepped into the lobby and was awed by how quiet and organized the place was. There were men dressed in black at every corner of the lobby. They were surely security personnels. She thanked her stars for having dressed properly that morning. Everyone looked glamorous and elegant.
“Adele Mackenzie.” She heard a female voice call her name and she immediately froze on her tracks and looked around, totally confused. Her heart was racing in her chest. “Behind you.” The voice signaled. Adele turned around and her gaze fell on a well dressed woman, probably in her early forties who was staring at her with a blank expression.
“Oh… hello.” Adele greeted politely, with a bright smile.
“You are right on time. Come with me.” The woman, who did not have the decency to return her greeting, ordered and Adele quietly followed her. She led the way to the elevator which took them to the tenth floor of the building.
Adele could still not believe Jamal owned such a magnificent place and had hundreds of people employed. He was indeed a King. The entire place was very busy with people walking helter-skelter, probably running errands and Adele noticed they stopped and greeted the lady that she was following closely.
She seemed to be a big deal around there.
The stern looking woman took Adele into her office which Adele admired very much. It was really spacious and neatly arranged.
“You can have a seat so we can commence with the interview.” Said the woman as she walked over to take a seat on her office chair.
“Interview?” Adele asked dumbfounded. She had no idea she was going to be interviewed and she did not prepare herself for it.
“I believe you heard me clearly.”
“But… but… I wasn’t told I was going to be interviewed.” Adele firmly protested
The woman, who seemed to be pissed off by her guts, took a seat and placed both hands on her table. She intertwined her fingers, giving Adele a serious look.
“Let me get this straight. You were asked to bring your documents to Dominick Co to apply for a job and you didn’t expect to be interviewed?” The woman asked, clearly annoyed.
“Well, the secretary whom I suppose was you who called to fill me in on what I was supposed to come with did not mention an interview.” She argued and the woman let out a quiet igh.
“Well then, my bad. But now that you are here, let’s get on with this, shall we?” She asks and Adele bit her lips hard.
She hated the woman already.
She thought of leaving the place, but she remembered that she had nowhere else to go, so she quietly took the seat opposite the woman and settled in.
“Good. So, are you ready?” The woman asked and Adele fought her urge to roll her eyes.
“Fuck you” she wanted totell her, but she swallowed the words and quietly nodded her head and handed over her CV to the woman.
The woman looked at it for a while, flipping through pages and failing to give remarks. She had a blank countenance and Adele couldn’t tell if she was disappointed with her documents or not.
When she was done, she placed the CV on the table and looked up at Adele once more.
“So, it says you have over two years of working experience as a senior editor.”
“That’s true.” Adele agreed with a nod.
“So tell me, when was Dominick Co. Founded and by whom?” The woman asked and Adele’s eyes shot wide open in shock.
“Well…” she stammered. “I know it was found by Mr. Dominick Richardson, but I don’t know when it was founded.” She answers curtly and the woman shook her head and scoffed, clearly dissatisfied with Adele’s response. Adele cared less.
“How many floors does this building have?” She fired another question.
“Excuse me, what?” Adele asked, stunned.
“You heard me, Miss Mackenzie.”
“Is it even proper to ask questions like this?” Adele was irritated.
“If you are interested in working in this very prestigious conglomerate, then you should know every nuke and cranny of it. You had to do your research.” The woman blabbered and Adele gritted her teeth in anger.
She wanted to tell the very rude woman off and make her understand that that conglomerate was the last place she wanted to be in and that she was only there because she had no choice.
“I have no idea how many floors are in this building.” She answered between her teeth and the woman smiled in satisfaction. She seemed to be enjoying what she was doing to Adele.
“Let’s ride on then. What is the name of the current CEO of the conglomerate, how old is he? And when did he start working here with his father?” Sha asked and this time around, Adele smiled.
That one was easy.
“His name is Jamal King Dominick, he is twenty nine years old and he began working under his father at the age of eighteen. That’s was when he first got into college.” She replied fluently and the woman chuckled.
“Of course you’d know that one. Every young girl in the country who desires him knows these details. You must be one of those girls swooning over him.” Adele did not say a word, she just relaxed herself on the chair and stared daggers at the woman whose smile soon faded.
“Let’s move on to the next question. How many branches has Dominick Co and in how many countries, state the countries as well.”
“I don’t know shit about this conglomerate’s branches and trust me I don’t really care.” She blasted and the woman was taken aback.
“You are one of those spoiled brats aren’t you? Your father must be a very rich man who has pulled some strings to get you into this conglomerate. You have no qualification at all, but here you are, applying to be a senior editor in our highly esteemed publishing agency. Wow! Just wow!”
The woman whined and Adele got really pissed off.
“I need you to call your boss right now.”
“What?” The woman asked, shocked. Adele nodded with a raised brow.
“I believe you heard me right, call your boss as in call Mr. Jamal King and tell him Adele Mackenzie is here to see him. Now!” Adele ordered and the woman went mute. After giving her a hard glare, she finally picked up her phone and called Jamal’s secretary.
“Hello Christine, one Miss Adele Mackenzie would like to speak with Mr. King, please put him through.” The woman spoke over the phone, her gaze not leaving Adele.
Adele folded her arms and rested her back on the back rest of the chair, smiling at the woman who was looking at her like she had lost her mind.
“He said to bring her to his office immediately.” The secretary on the other end of the phone reported and hung up. The woman placed the phone on the table and looked at Adele, totally mortified.
Only the most important guests were ever invited into Jamal’s office. She couldn’t help but wonder who Adele was at that moment.
“Come with me.” She ordered lifelessly as she led the way out of her office.
*********”**********************************
The moment Adele stepped into the office, Jamal, who had been waiting impatiently by the transparent glass wall turned to face her. He smiled and shoved both hands in his trouser pockets. He was happy to see her.
Adele on the other hand did not want to be anywhere close to him so she stopped on her tracks and gave him a hard glare.
“May we be excused, Grace?” He asked the confused woman standing beside Adele and she quickly nodded her head.
“Of course, Mr. King.” She replied and rushed out of the office.
“Adele.” Jamal called the moment the door closed.
“You Schelling son of a bitch!” Adele screamed as she took long strides over to him. When she was close, she began hitting his entire body with her arms and crying.
“This was all your plan wasn’t it? You intentionally asked me to come here unprepared so I would be humiliated by your secretary! What did I ever do to deserve all this?” She cried as she kept hitting him.
Jamal, who had no idea what was going on, managed to hold her still and looked at her drenched face.
“What do you mean by they humiliated you?”
“I had no idea I was going to get interviewed so I didn’t prepare. The woman who brought me in here asked me questions I couldn’t provide answers to and she mocked me. This was all your plan wasn’t it?” She asked, screaming at the top of her lungs.
“Hussshhh.” Jamal hushed her as he drew her into his big arms and hugged her tight until she was calm again.
He was mad.
He was furious.
He didn’t ask Grace to interview Adele. He only instructed her to take Adele’s CV and introduce her to the other workers, but she decided to take the law into her hands and do things she was not supposed to do.
When Adele was calm again, he pulled her out of his embrace and walked over to his table where dialed a number on the fixed phone.
“Grace, I need you to report to my office with the rest of the human and resource team immediately!” He commanded fiercely and banged the phone on the table.
He was going to have them all fired for humiliating his wife.
