CHAPTER THIRTY-NINE.
Adele’s work at the publishing agency was no different from what she used to do back at her first job site. She had her office and was in charge of editing and reviewing articles before they were published to the media.
She loved her job and her new colleagues. They warmly welcomed her and most of them fell in love with her rich British accent. Sometimes, they asked her questions just so she could talk to them so they could hear her beautiful accent.
She loved everything about the workplace and looked forward to helping them grow. Even her pay and benefits that came along with it were good.
In less than no time, she was going to be able to get herself a car. Jamal once sent a car over for her, but she sent the driver back with the car, saying she didn’t need anything from him and she was serious. She had no plans of ever receiving anything from him!
That evening, she was frying pancakes to have for dinner when her doorbell rang. She quickly turned off the fire beneath the frying pan and went to open the door, hoping it wasn’t Jamal because she wasn’t ready to fight with him that evening.
When she got to the door, she stood before it and let out a heavy sigh. If it was Jamal, then the evening was going to be a hot one. She didn’t like having Jamal around and she could very well ignore the door, but for some odd reason, she found it very difficult to ignore Jamal’s knock or call.
She stretched her hand forward and opened the door. All her senses of defence were on high alert and ready to blast him, but to her greatest shock, when she opened the door, the person she saw wasn’t Jamal, but Grandma Devon.
She instantly closed her mouth and swallowed the words which were about to pour out from it. Very unpleasant words.
“Grandma!” She called in complete shock and Grandma Devon frowned at her.
“Adele, did you really have to shut me out of your life as well? Did I in any way make your life miserable?” Grandma asked in a serious voice and Adele bit her lips in guilt as she stepped away from the door, making way for grandma to walk into her living room.
“Grandma. Adele called as she closed the door behind her and turned to look at Grandma Devon who still wasn’t smiling at her. “Grandma, I’m sorry. I was so stressed out and confused. I just needed to get far away from Jamal and that house for a while. I totally forgot.” She tried to explain feeling very bad for what she had done.
Grandma was the only one who had always taken her side, but when the worst came to the worst, she had totally forgotten about her and that was bad.
“I’m sorry grandma, please don’t stay mad at me.” She pouted and rushed over to where her grandma was standing and slicked her hands around her arm, resting her head on her left shoulder. “Jamal put me in a very tight spot grandma, I couldn’t think of anything else.”
She cried as she kept shaking her grandmother’s hand. That was something she was fun to do whenever she offended her grandmother.
“Adele, please don’t cut my arm off. It’s okay, do you honestly think that I can stay mad at you?” Grandma asked and she squealed in excitement as she literally dragged her over to the sitting area for them to sit down.
She was happy that her grandma had come to see her, but she was also low-key disappointed that it wasn’t Jamal. She wanted it to be him.
“How have you been?” Grandma asked, looking at Adele and she just shrugged her shoulders.
“I’m okay grandma. I’m doing my best. I got a job at DHL Publishing firm as a Senior editor.”
“Wow! That’s amazing. Congratulations.”
“Thank you grandma.”
“So, how is it going with you and Jamal?” Grandma asked and Adele’s head dropped down.
Nothing was going well between them and she did not want anything to go well.
“Things are not going well between us, grandma. The only thing we do is yell at each other whenever we meet. It’s exhausting.” Adele lamented.
“Things are seriously messed up between you two and it’s all Jamal’s fault. What can I do?”
“There’s nothing for you to do Grandma.”
“Adele.” Grandma called as she turned to look at Adele with a soft look. She knew Jamal had greatly hurt and offended Adele and that Adele had every right to be mad at him, but she wasn’t going to sit back and watch them go separate ways without trying to help the situation.
“Yes grandma.” Adele replied, looking at her
“What Jamal did to you was unforgivable. You two were married, but there was never a day he treated you right and he made you lose your unborn child. I would be furious and I would hate him just as much as you do right now. You have every right to feel that way. I totally understand you.” Said grandma as she took Adele’s left hand in hers.
Adele looked at her, with tears welling in her eyes. She wanted to tell her that was not all what Jamal had done to her. That Jamal did not only make her lose their unborn child, but he rendered her barren, but she decided not to let it out.
Things were already messy and complicated, she did want them to cause any more commotion.
“I’m not trying to take his side and trust me when I tell you that I am very mad at Jamal as well. He knows that himself, but darling, I want you to think things through before making a decision. Do you honestly think that filing for a divorce is the best way to sort out this issue?” Grandma asked and Adele stayed quite as she looked at her intensely, but lost in thought.
She would be lying if she said she did not miss Jamal. They had been married for almost a year and she had grown used to having him around even though he was distant. She missed him and all the good times they used to have together once in a while, but that was not enough reason for her to want him back.
Jamal hurt her in every way and she never wanted to go back to him because she knew he would never change.
“Grandma.” She called after a heavy sigh. “I understand how you feel about this entire situation. I know it hurts you to see Jamal and I fighting, but this cannot be avoided. Jamal has done so many awful things to me, but I decided to keep my cool, but making me lose our unborn child was just going too far. I’m sorry to say this grandma, but I’m never going to forgive Jamal for that and I’m never going to stop sending him divorce papers. That’s how much I hate him. That’s how much I want to be away from him. I don’t want to be part of his life anymore.” She explained firmly and Grandma Devon could feel the seriousness in her words. She wanted to push it, but she stopped herself and just nodded her head.
“I totally understand you.” She said smiling, even though her heart was filled with pain and disappointment.
She didn’t want them to be apart.
“Grandma, please don’t be mad at me. I know you are the one who proposed this marriage, but I’m sure you can see for yourself that it’s causing us nothing but pain. The best we can do is go our separate ways so we don’t end up killing each other.” Adele further lamented and Grandma Devon brought her hand to her lips and kissed them.
‘I am not and to you, honey. Like I said before, I totally understand and if this divorce is what will make you happy, then don’t give up.” She encouraged and Adele crashed into her arms, engulfing her in a bone crushing hug.
“Thank you very much grandma.” She thanked with a wide smile, but deep down, her heart was in turmoil.
Grandma just said if getting divorce is what was going to make her happy, then she shouldn’t give up.
Yes, Jamal hurt her and she hated him. She wanted to be away from him to be able to heal psychologically. What she had never really thought of was if she wanted to be away from him forever.
Just a while ago, she felt disappointed when she opened the door and did not see Jamal. She wanted him to be the one.
She was hell bent on divorcing him and moving on with her life, but the big question was; will the divorce bring her the peace and happiness she soothed?
