CHAPTER THIRTY-SEVEN.
Adele had her last hospital appointment at the hospital that morning. The doctor told her she was totally healed and could go on with her physical activities. She was very happy to get the news. She was already sick and tired of coming to that hospital especially as Jamal was the one responsible for paying her medical bills. After her check up sessions, they never asked her for any money, the total bills were always forwarded to Jamal who would pay without any hesitation.
As she exited the hospital lobby, her cell phone rang in her bag and she quickly fished it out to see who it was. A smile flashed on her face when she saw Linda’s name on the caller ID and she instantly answered the call.
“Hello girl.” She greeted as age pressed the phone over her ear.
“Adele, hello, hope you are doing alright.” Linda’s joyous voice sounded over the phone, making her smile even more.
“I’m doing just fine and you?”
“I’m alright. I just called to inform you that Wendy and I will be going out to relax today since it’s Saturday. If you don’t mind, you can join us.”
“Uh…ummm…” Adele stammered. She wanted to turn down the offer because she’d rather stay at home and watch movies all day, but on a second thought, she swallowed her words of denial. She had been doing that for the past month and needed a change of routine. “Yeah!” She said joyfully. “Yes of course, I would love to join you girls as long as none of you is putting on anything fancy cuz I’m from the hospital right now and I’m just simply dressed, I don’t think I wanna change my clothes.” She explained and Linda laughed hard over the phone.
“We aren’t gonna dress fancy, Adele. Come over to my flat so we can have something to eat before leaving.”
“I will be there in a jiffy.”
“Okay then, Chao.”
“Chao.” Then the line went dead. She exited the call logs section and went over to her contact list to search for an Uber driver’s number to call so he could come and pick her up.
She hadn’t saved up enough money to buy herself a car yet.
Just as she was about to dial the number, a black Bugatti parked before her and she didn’t need to think twice before she knew it was Jamal’s car.
The backseat window louvre wound down. She rolled her eyes hard when she saw Jamal comfortably seated in the back seat with a pair of sunglasses on. His thick black hair was perfectly coiffed as always and he had on his usual poker face.
“Get in.” He ordered, but Adele acted like she had heard the opposite. She began walking away, but to her greatest dismay, the car began to follow her.
When she had had enough, she stopped on her tracks and the car came to halt as well.
“What do you want from me?” She asked in a hushed but strong voice through the window.
“You’ll know when you get in.” Just then, one guard stepped out from the front seat and bowed respectfully before her.
“Good morning Mrs. King.” The guard greeted and opened the back seat door for her to get in.
Mrs. King.
The guardsy words rang in her ear again and she felt her intestines hurt like they were being sliced into pieces by an engine saw. She hated the fact that the guard had just addressed her by that name.
“Good morning Jeff.” She responded with a smile, despite the anger that was boiling in her heart.
She turned again towards Jamal and gave him one hard glare before stepping into the car. The guard then closed the door and got into the passenger seat in front and the driver drove off.
“Adele.” Jamal called calmly, but Adele did not respond. She kept looking straight ahead. She did not want to be in his presence. She did not want to talk to him because she was extremely mad at him.
She had sent divorce papers to his office over ten times since the last incident, but he had not signed any. He always delivered them back to her house in the same envelope either in ashes or in pieces and with a note which stated that he was never going to sign the next letter she would send.
She wanted to take him to court, but she knew that would be a total waste of time, so sending the papare over and over again was her only way out. She hoped that one-day he would get fed up and sign the damn papers and set her free.
“Adele, I’m talking to you.”
“What do you want me to say to you?” Asked Adele rudely as she turned to look at him. Jamal paused for a bit and leaned backwards to look at the woman seated by his side to make sure it was his wife.
He had never known that very fierce side of Adele.
“I just want us to talk.”
“Well I don’t want to talk to you, how difficult is that to understand?”
“It is not difficult at all to understand, but it is to accept.” He explained and she scoffed while shaking her head.
As she looked outside at the houses that sped by as the car moved, she wished she could just open the door and jump out caring less about the consequences because that was way better, that would hurt less than having a conversation with Jamal, the murderer of his child.
“Why do you keep wasting your efforts sending me those papers when you know I’ll never sign them? Or do you just enjoy taunting me?”
“Jamal I don’t have time to taunt you and I will keep sending those papers until the day you decide to sign them!” She firmly stated as she looked Jamal straight in the eyes.
“That day is never going to come, Adele, so just know you’ll keep receiving trash at your doorstep everyday you send a letter to my office.” He calmly stated with his eyes focused on the road.
He had taken off his sunglasses and Adele could now see his entire face.
He looked just as handsome and breathtaking as always.
But at that moment, he wasn’t taking Adele’s breath in a romantic way but in a deadly way. She was suffocating in his presence and she wished someone would save her from her current predicament.
“I’m not going to my apartment.” She notified once she saw the driver taking the street that led to the building where her apartment was located.
“Where are you going?”
“That’s none of your business, you can leave me here, I’ll find my way.”
“Adele, if you don’t tell me where you are headed this instant, I might as well just take you back home.” He threatened.
Adele gave him a sharp look and he nodded his head. Her breath hitched and her body instantly heated up. The Dominick mansion was the last place she wanted to be right now.
“My friends and I…”
“You friends?” Jamal interrupted as he gave her a surprised look. “I didn’t know you had any friends.”
“It’s not like you knew anything about me, did you?” She asked fiercely, her words stinging Jamal like a honey bee. He cleared his throat and said nothing.
1-0
Adele felt accomplished.
“As I was saying, my friends and I are going out later today. I’m going to meet them right now at one’s flat.”
“Okay.” He said in a quiet voice. “Give the address to the driver so he can drive us there.”
Adele wanted to protest, but she knew that would be a total waste of time, so she typed the address on her phone and handed it to the driver.
“Jamal, how did you even know you’d find me at the hospital at this time?”
“You might not know this, but I know about your hospital appointments. I know about the time and what you discussed with the doctor, I also know today was your last appointment with the doctor.”
“That is so wrong!” Adele protested. “You have no right to know about things like that!”
“I think I do, love. I am your husband, remember!”
“Son to be ex-husband!”
“That’s until then. Right now, I am still your husband and I am obliged to know everything that happens with you.”
“Fuck you Jamal! Fuck you!” She screamed in the car and both the driver and the guard seating in front exchanged confused glances. Neither of them dared to utter a word or turn to see what was going on between their boss and his wife.
“Adele, all this screaming won’t change anything.”
“Stop the car! That’s the building!” Adele ordered when she noticed that they were about to drive past her destination. Once the car came to a halt, she struggled to open the door, but it was locked.
“Jamal!” She called between her teeth as she turned to look at him because she knew he was the one who had locked it. “Open up this door, now!” She commanded.
“Have fun with your friends”
“I don’t think that can happen anymore. You’ve already ruined my day by making you see your face!” She spat out fiercely and Jamal was frustrated, but he didn’t want to show it.
“Stop sending me divorce papers , Adele. I won’t sign them. I’ll keep sending you ashes and pieces of the papers everytime you send me one. This marriage is sealed never to be broken. I am never going to let you leave me. I’m never giving you a divorce. Never! Let that sink.” He stated firmly and the moment Adele heard the doors unlock, she stepped out of the car and slammed the door hard behind her.
She hated Jamal for saying all those things to her.
“Do you both think I should let her go?” Jamal asked his guard and driver and they were both stunned to the core. The driver gave him a surprised look through the rear mirror while his guard turned to look at him with a bewildered look plastered on his face.
“Excuse me Sir?” He asked just to be sure he heard right.
“Do you think I should sign the divorce papers?”
“No! Of course not. Fight to get her back!” The guard firmly suggested and Jamal smiled with a gentle nod.
“Fight to get her back. I’m going to do just that.”
