Chapter 29: Comply in Public but Oppose in Private

Book:A Farewell to Mr. Luo Published:2024-5-1

In the corridor of the hospital, Zhong Hao was followed by a group of doctors and nurses, carrying out their daily rounds. Everywhere they went, there were compliments and greetings: “Hello, Dr. Zhong”, “Dr. Zhong, thanks for your hard work”.
Zhong Hao nodded and smiled politely, but at the bottom of his eyes there were condescension and contempt, as if he was superior to them. In recent years, he had been thriving in the hospital, and rumors had it that Luo Chejue was about to nominate him as director of the Luo’s hospital, giving him full reign over it.
He felt complacent inside. Whoever could be the director at his age would have a bright future. Only a wave of his hand would make those attractive nurses compete to be at his service.
Zhong Hao’s complacent look disappeared immediately when he saw Lin Yu coming up towards him. This woman was the only person who didn’t know what was good for her! “Hum, wait till I become the director and teach her a good lesson!”
His kept his smile: “Dr. Lin.”
Lin Yu only nodded: “Mr. Luo is asking for you.” And then she left.
Zhong Hao gritted his teeth, but he didn’t dare to delay and rushed to the office directly.
Pushing open the door, he saw Luo Chejue swing around in his swivel chair and look at him. The superior and imposing manner immediately overwhelmed Zhong Hao. He closed the door and said respectfully: “Mr. Luo, you asked for me?” Deep down, he was thrilled. Is he here to announce the promotion of Zhong?
Before he straightened up, he heard Luo Chejue’s casual tone: “so you want to be the president?”
Zhong Hao frowned subconsciously. How come it was not like what he had thought? However, he still tried to curry favour with Luo: “I will be extremely grateful for your help, Mr. Luo.” In recent years, Luo Chejue had been promoting him directly and indirectly, so he also needed to take his stand.
Luo Chejue snorted. Zhong Hao raised his head but could read Luo’s mind from his face.
“You’ve indeed done a great job… especially four years ago. I’ve been very satisfied with you.”
A simple sentence had caused Zhong Hao an emotional turmoil. The first half of what he’d said excited him but the mention of four years ago made his heart skip a beat before he finally felt relieved upon hearing the second half.
He almost thought what had happened four years ago was exposed.
“Do you know what I’m most satisfied with?” Luo Chejue leaned against the back of that chair, cross-legged, his hands clasped, emitting the aura of power.
Before Zhong Hao could respond, he continued: “I’m most satisfied with the fact that a dog I’ve fed has been complying in public but opposing in private, and still been chewing the bones I’ve thrown him for all these years.”
Zhong Hao turned ghastly pale all of a sudden, overwhelmed by shock and fear!
He knew!
Luo Chejue was satisfied with his reaction: “three million in gambling debt. Do you think it can be covered by selling all of your organs?”
Now Zhong Hao didn’t even dare to think of getting away with it. He had complacently thought that he would be promoted to director of the hospital, so he started gambling four years ago and hadn’t been able to stop. It turned out that his addiction to gambling and rapid advances in his career had all been premeditated by Luo Chejue.
“Mr. Luo, please, please have mercy on me.”
Looking at Zhong Hao kneeling on the ground and kowtowing constantly, Luo Chejue was irritated, because his heart started aching again. All that he had been doing was reminding him that Xia Weiwei had died.
“Mercy? If it weren’t for that phone call, I wouldn’t have found out that I had been feeding a dog for Xia Zhengyan. Do you think he can save you now?”
Back then, Xia Zhengyan and Xia Mo bribed Zhong Hao to put on a show, aiming to make Xia Weiwei’s death stand to reason. Xia Zhengyan thought that Luo Chejue would not care if Xia Weiwei died or lived because of Xia Mo, so he’d made that phone call, so that Xia Weiwei would give up hope. But only Zhong Hao knew that Luo Chejue’s never intended to force Xia Weiwei to do the blood transfusion. Luo Chejue’s words were: “Call the nearest hospital for help. I’ll send someone to deal with it. You just need to take good care of Xia Weiwei.”
Zhong Hao hadn’t expected Luo Chejue’s instruction, and he had already accepted the bribery from Father Xia. However, he didn’t want to offend Luo Chejue. So he decided to take her blood, except that he only crippled Xia Weiwei instead of taking her life. He had thought that he’d managed to please both sides and thrive, but now the karma had finally caught up with him.
Luo Chejue asked his people to drag Zhong Hao out. He stood by the window, subconsciously touching the wedding ring on his right hand.
Back then, after having accidentally learned about the shares, he had been keeping an eye on the Xia Zhengyan and Xia Mo, keeping track of their plans and schemes. However, he hadn’t expected that Xia Zhengyan would want Xia Weiwei dead. Luo Chejue wanted to use Xia Mo relax their vigilance before he could get evidence against them and set everything right. But because he was also bearing a grudge against Xia Weiwei, he was indifferent to her.
He kept his eyes half-closed, twitch his thin lips, and the air was faintly flowing with his low, dream-like mumbling, “Weiwei”.
