Chapter 18: A Headstone for Her Son

It had been three days, and Xia Weiwei hadn’t said a single word. When she was awake, she would sit motionlessly in her wheelchair like a statue, her eyes staring ahead blearily.
Lin Yu had been invited by Yan Shaoxuan to talk with her, trying to bring her around, which ended in vain.
“Miss Xia, may I speak with you?”
Xia Weiwei didn’t respond.
Lin Yu stared at her, whose bleary eyes looked as if they were covered with a layer of dust, and sighed pitifully.
There’d been a riot going on outside! The Luo’s and the Yan’s had started competing against one another, and all the enterprises in the market had somehow been dragged into the muddle, causing chaos, and the public opinion against Xia Weiwei had been increasingly uglier, which had almost been reduced to the point of condemnation.
Yan Shaoxuan pushed open the door and inquired with his gaze. Lin Yu shook her head.
Xia Weiwei had completely closed herself off. If it went on like this…
“Weiwei, it’s a fine day today. Shall I take you out for a walk?”
Yan Shaoxuan combed her hair: “where do you want to go?”
Out of his expectation, Xia Weiwei responded: “the…cemetery”. She spit out the words like a jamming cassette, fuzzy and almost unintelligible.
Yan Shaoxuan was surprised and delighted at her response, but after hearing these two words, he felt his heart falter again.
When they arrived at the cemetery, Yan Shaoxuan motioned for the several bodyguards and cars to stay outside, and he pushed Xia Weiwei in.
He knew that Weiwei was here to see her mother, but was quite worried if she would take it too hard.
They were silent along the way until they got to the grave of Xia Weiwei’s mother. Xia Weiwei looked at the picture of her mother, reaching out to touch it.
“Shaoxuan, could you please set up a headstone for me?”
“Weiwei, what are you talking about?”
“I want to set up one for my baby so that he could be keep my mom company.”
Hearing this, Yan Shaoxuan’s gripped heart was slowly released.
“Sure.”
It was not difficult for Yan Shaoxuan to buy a graveyard and set up a headstone in a short time, but Xia Weiwei insisted on carving the inscription on her own.
Xia Weiwei was carving stroke by stroke, with drops of tears rolling down and falling into the grooves she had carved.
Her fingers had already begun to bleed. However, she was still engraving each stroke arduously without a word, but her determination had made everything quite clear.
“My baby, I’m sorry. Mom hasn’t been able to protect you.”
“My child, I’m sorry. Mom was so useless that she couldn’t avenge you.”
“My baby, I’m sorry. It’s all mom’s fault. I shouldn’t have fallen in love with your father and brought you into this world, but leaving you no chance of ever opening your eyes to take a glance at it.”
“My baby, I’m sorry. Mom couldn’t even see who you looked like.”
“My baby, I’m sorry. Mom…has missed you so much!”
Sorry… I’m terribly sorry…
Tears welled up in the grooves on the headstone, as if they could wash away all her pain.
She was weeping!
Yan Shaoxuan stood quietly behind her, trying to share her grief.
The inscription of the headstone read:
The tomb of our beloved son, Luo Jingnian
Father: Luo Chejue
Mother: Xia Weiwei
Jingnian… She had once envisioned being by her child’s side as he grew up.
Her son had a father and a mother, so he wouldn’t be a homeless ghost. As long as this headstone was there, it would always remind Luo Chejue that he once had a son! No matter how many children he would have in the future, it would never be possible to erase the existence of her son!
“Shaoxuan, could you please leave me alone for a while?”
Knowing that Yan Shaoxuan was now the only one in the world who really cared about her, she added: “I won’t do stupid things.”
The sound of footsteps behind her was fading away.
After a while, in the large cemetery, there was only Xia Weiwei’s intermittent voice.
“Mom, I’ve come to see you. This is Jingnian, my child.”
“Just like you, mom, I can’t walk anymore.”
“Mom, can you believe that dad and Xia Mo want me dead? They are both my immediate relatives. I don’t know…I don’t know why…Mom, why have you left me all your shares?… And Jue, I’ve loved him so much…But mom… I’m exhausted…I could no longer tell what’s true and what’s false…I don’t know how to live on like this…I miss you so much…”
Her voice was trailing off.
Xia Weiwei rested her head on the headstone, and it felt like she was back in her mother’s arms. She could almost feel the gentle hands caressing her head, trying to comfort her.
And at that moment, Xia Weiwei made a decision secretly.
