I felt a tap on my shoulder and opened my eyes to see Mrs. Kathrine staring at me
“How are you feeling?” She asked
“Fine…sorry I slept off”
“Ohh come on it’s okay” She smiles
“Are we there yet?”
“We will soon be there, you need to get ready, immediately the bus stop, we will come down and run off without turning back”
“Oh…is this place still Mexico?”
“Of course but I guess we are far from the prison due to the distance we’ve ridden”
“Ohh….”
“Get ready we will be jumping down soon
Minutes later the bus stopped, and I turned to look at Mrs. Kathrine
“It’s now……ready…”
“Yes…..” I nodded my head
“It’s now…..” She blinked at me, she opened the door and turned toward me
“Give me your hand she ordered”
I gave my hand, I was ready to do this, I want to be free from this person I cant a low Mrs. Kathrine’s hard work to be in vain.
“Let’s do this….” I smiled at her and without much thinking, she held my hand tightly
“Now…..!”
We jumped down from the bus, though I felt a sting below my tummy but I cared less
“Run…..!” She blinked at me and without much thinking, we took to our heels, the goal is to run without looking back, and right now we’re running like our life depended on it
I was surprised at how agile Mrs. Katherine is irrespective of her age. We kept on running not minding the stares and look people kept giving us, I was still in my prison uniform and might get caught
We have run so far when we suddenly stopped to catch our breath, we are now in a quiet lonely part,
We sat down under a tree to rest, our breath were erratic, I look at Mrs. Kathrine who does not seem tired,
“We made it…” I smiled
“Yes we did, now your baby can have a good life” She smiled back, I felt grateful, I held onto her hand and look at her
“Thank you so much, Mrs. Kathrine, I couldn’t have done this without you”
“It’s okay, I know you’re innocent I can’t just watch you go through that pain”
“I’m grateful….”
“You wait here, let me go and get some clothes for you in the store you need to change from this uniform”
I look around the place and suddenly felt scared but considering how far I’ve come with Mrs. Kathrine, I know I could trust her
“Alright I’m waiting here”
“You don’t have to fear, I’m with you on this, I can’t leave you this last minute”
“Okay….”
“Just wait here I’ll be back before you know it”
“I’m waiting” I smiled and watch her leave, I relaxed my head back on the tree and wonder what next after this, where we will go from here, I just want to wait for Mrs. Katherine to come back.
It’s been hours already and Mrs. Katherine is not yet back, I was starting to get worried,
Where could she be?
Has she left me?
Did she abandon me or what?
I was getting scared, this place is lonely and I have no one to go to. Everywhere is getting dark I kept on straining my head to see if I could sight her but yet, it all seems like she suddenly disappeared without a clue
I look around the whole place and I know its dangerous sleeping here, I might get attacked by wild animals or something, I stood up ready to go to where I don’t even know
I was about to start leaving when I heard approaching footsteps, I look up to see Mrs. Katherine
I couldn’t wait, I ran toward her and engulf her in a right hug
“Sorry for coming late…” She whispered patting my back, we started like that for some seconds before I pulled away
I look at her hand and saw her holding a shopping bag
“I was worried, did anything happen?”
“No…. I went to my house downtown and decided to clean it before coming to get you, I also cook some food for you”
I look at Mrs. Kathrine wondering why she’s so nice to me
“Why are you nice to me, I’ve done nothing to deserve this kindness from you”
“Come on, you’re like a daughter to me, I will do anything for you, consider me as the mom you see for now”
“Thank you so much, Mrs. Kathrine”
“It’s nothing come on, change into this let’s leave this place, it’s getting late”
“Okay….” I said and took the nylon from her, I opened the bag and was surprised to see a beautiful-looking gown
“This is beautiful it must have cost a lot” I pouted
“Ohhh come on it’s nothing, just put it on let’s go”
I pulled off the prison uniform and threw it into the bush,
I wore the gown and damn it fits me so perfectly and my little baby bump is already showing
“You look gorgeous”
“Thank you…” I blush, I was still smiling when suddenly a thought hit me
“Mrs. Katherine”
“Yes dear”
“I’m sorry to ask but where did you get the money to buy such an expensive dress”
“Ohhh come on, I earn money while working in the prison”
“Ohhh….”
“Yeah so come on we have to hurry up, it’s late already”
“Okay let’s go”
She leads the way she I followed behind, we walk for some minutes before we could sight an Uber, just a few days ago I was worried and never had the hope of leaving the prison, but here I am out of the prison looking forward to a brighter future with my child
Mrs. Kathrime flagged down a taxi and we entered, I look out through the window as the fresh air hit my skin giving me a cool sensation
“It feels so good to be free,” I thought closing my eyes and inhaling the breath of fresh air
The taxi stopped in front of a bungalow and stepped down, Mrs. Kathrine paid him
“Is this your house?” I ask walking with her inside the house
“I use to live here with my family before the accident”
“Ohhh I’m sorry”
“It’s nothing” She smiled and twist the door open, we entered and I was shocked to see the whole place sparkling clean, it didn’t look like a house that was left for a long time
“Come on have a seat”
I sat down looking around the whole place, the house might seem small but it’s clean and accommodating
“All you have to do is rest, I will work and make sure we live fine”
“No.. no…you don’t have to, I can work trust me, tomorrow I will go in search of a job”
“But you’re pregnant”
“I’m not a liability Mrs. Katherine, I want to work I have dreams, I can’t just sit around and watch you do everything, I want to help out too”
“Alright fine, but you must promise to always be careful”
“Sure I will”
“Alright, you must know to change your name, since we ran away, we don’t want to get caught so in your workplace you’ll change your name and inside here you’ll still be Marrisa”
“Alright I understand your point”
“Come on let’s show you to your room, you’ll freshen up and come down to eat”
“Thank you……” I smile and feeling happy from now on, I will focus on the dream I have while coming here
