Chapter 56

She could tell how late it was. Who could it be at this ungodly hour, banging on her door? Who’s there? Maybe a housekeeper?
There was another knock, this time louder and somewhat agitated.
“Wh…. Who’s it?” Even as she asked, her voice trembled.
The man answered, “It’s the King’s guard,”
and Ella got out of bed cautiously. She got to the door but didn’t knock or do anything else. “Is…. Is there a problem?”
She fumbled for words as she leaned in for a better look.
“You are needed in the King’s private quarters. Now,” and after some hesitation, she opened the door.
A security guard, indeed.
But the King has no need to summon her at this moment.
Surely he doesn’t want to have sexual relations with her.
The soldier shook his head and began walking away, saying, “Come on,” and Ella had little option but to follow.
They proceeded along the pitch-black corridor.
The flames from lamposts on each side of the hail made it so that the way wasn’t entirely black. Though it couldn’t be compared to the sun’s intensity.
Still feeling lightheaded, Ella stepped behind the massive guard with her right hand clutching the top of her dress.
They arrived to the King’s private quarters, and the door was opened for her. She walked in cautiously and saw the King at his massive writing table.
She’s already anxious, and this simply made it worse.
Did the King really want to have sex with her?
She bowed before him, her hand still on her breast, and said,
“Greetings, My King.”
Spenser set down his pen to glance at her.
“Ella.”
“Well, I need you to make me some tea.” Ella’s eyes lit up as he responded,
“I need something to put me to sleep.”
Oh…. Was it the real reason he called for her? Thankfully, her thoughts weren’t correct. But…. she’d have to go into the kitchen if she wanted to make tea. Could she make it there at this hour?
“One of my guards would accompany you to ensure your safety, so don’t worry. “Spenser murmured, seemingly reading her mind, and Ella gave a little grin in response.
“King, I appreciate your kindness. She bowed, then turned around and walked out the door.
“Guard!” Before Ella could leave the room, Spenser yelled for someone to come in and someone did.
“My King…”
Send an emissary to the kitchen with the Queen and come back with her. The guard bowed respectfully as he departed with Ella after he issued the order.
When they departed, Spenser went back to work .
“Urgh!” He banged his fist severely on the table, fighting desperately not to drop to his knees.
“My King! Are you all right?” That’s what the doorman on patrol wanted to know.
Spenser hissed at him, clearly not wanting him to see him in this state.
Forcing himself to endure the excruciating discomfort, he gripped the table with such ferocity. The moon was completely full. Spenser could feel the dreadful impact approaching, as usual.
Oh! His worst nemesis has always been the moon, which he considers to be a foolish illusion. When he thinks back on the things it causes him to do and how horribly it affects him, he shudders. He would have been lucky to make it through that.
This was the last time he would ever have to wear chains. If they didn’t restrain him before his wolf took over, the results may have been disastrous.
Certainly he wouldn’t be restrained by chains in the palace. Every time Viscar and the Doctor transported him somewhere else, it was a remote cave where they tied him up.
More than once, his wolf had been too strong for the shackles, and they had come loose.
vanishing and wreaking havoc; occasionally unfortunate individuals.
He wanted this to stop; he wanted this awful curse to cease. How could he possible pull it off?
Ella appreciated the security guard’s presence. Without the light, she would have been too afraid to do her task. She wasted no time, what with the kitchen being completely deserted and silent, in preparing the tea.
She prepared the tea and, just as she had done the previous time, held it aloft as she prayed. In her second attempt, she executed it with much more fervor and confidence. The guard stood just outside the door, and she had her doubts that he could hear her.
After finishing up, she and the guard left the kitchen and made their way to the King’s quarters.
Even when Ella’s knocked on the door, King Spenser was at peace.
His voice was a bit hoarse, but he said, “Enter,” and soon enough Ella came in with the tea.
This was exactly what he had been looking for.
Ella bowed and murmured, “I’m done, My King,” before putting the book down on the table as Spenser instructed. On the other hand, there was something… There was a change in his expression that Ella could see from the moment she departed. He seemed…. dissatisfied.
Having abandoned her tea, she decided to depart since she saw no use in staying.
“M…. My King, may I go at this time?” She put on her most pleasant face and inquired. She didn’t understand his abrupt change in attitude.
Spenser sat back in his chair and took the tea cup off the table. “You may,” he said curtly. Ella nodded, then retreated. Spenser yelled her name just as she was going to unlock the door and walk in. Taking a moment, she turned around to gaze at him, and their icy blue eyes locked.
The two became silent, Ella’s pulse racing as she wondered what had gotten the King’s attention again. When they stayed in touch like way, she felt a lot of heat. Just when she was ready to lose it, Spenser spoke out.
Please accept my gratitude. He finally let the words out of his mouth. Though his voice wasn’t exactly comforting, it was nevertheless unexpected. Taking a deep breath in, Ella looked down at the ground. “You… She mumbled “You’re welcome, My King,” opened the door, and departed.
Afterwards, sKing Spenser, sound sleeping on the bed.
