Following her line of sight, Joe Wright walked in quickly and picked her up in a natural hug.
She waited on a bench in the hallway while Joe Wright walked Keira through her exam.
She had just closed her eyes when her phone suddenly vibrated.
A letter in the mail.
Alex Brown had been admitted to the hospital yesterday.
It was a short line, but it seemed to drop a stone on a calm lake, causing ripples.
The sender’s field was garbled, and she wondered who would have informed her of Alex Brown’ whereabouts.
Eric Chan, or Alex Brown himself?
Both seemed unlikely, and as she wondered, she replied to the email, trying to ask for more specifics, but unfortunately, no further response came.
As long as Alex Brown was safe, even if she couldn’t contact him, she had the courage to endure the loneliness and miss him.
Putting her phone away, she leaned back in her chair and imagined what Alex Brown was doing at the moment.
Soon after, the door to the exam room opened and Joe Wright came out with Keira in his arms, his expression still relaxed: “The doctor says it’s okay, so we’ll go home and recover in a few days.”
Emma Rosy was relieved to make sure Keira was okay, and raised her hand to the vending machine at the end of the hallway: “She hasn’t eaten this morning, I’ll get a carton of milk.”
Joe Wright agrees and waits in place.
“Daddy…” Keira speaks in a milky voice: “What were you doing? I didn’t see you when I woke up.”
Joe Wright showed a gentle smile, while fixing her hair, while answering, “I was taking Aunt Eva home, the one who took care of you last night, remember?”
Her mood instantly drops and Keira hangs her head, but her hands clutch Joe Wright’s jacket.
Of course she remembered, and her mother had told her that was why he couldn’t accompany them to the hospital.
But Auntie was an adult, so why was she stealing Daddy from her?
Shrinking into Joe Wright’s arms, she whispered in protest, “I don’t like Auntie, so ignore her, okay? I’ll be good from now on and never make you mad again.”
The way she looks at the moment is like the years when she didn’t have her biological parents, when Joe Wright was all she had.
Surprised that she and Eva Taylor had only met once, how could such a sense of rejection arise, Joe Wright asked blankly.
“Because… because I don’t want to lose another dad.” Keira flattened her mouth as if she would burst into tears in the next moment.
Emma Rosy, who had returned from buying milk, happened to hear this and turned blue.
“Keira, don’t talk nonsense!” She took a few steps to Joe Wright, gave her daughter a scolding look, and then explained, “You can’t take children’s words seriously, don’t take them to heart.”
Keira was already dizzy and uncomfortable because of her fever. Her real father had gone abroad, and early in the morning she learned that Joe’s father had been snatched away. She felt sorry for her mother and had been forcibly holding back her sadness, and finally waited for the opportunity to pout at Joe’s father, but who knew that she would be lectured again.
A moment, all the aggression and fear are surging to the heart, she cried: “I did not lie, mom only lie! Joe dad and aunt together, will not want me, I have no dad…….”
Seeing her daughter’s face is full of tears, Emma Rosy heartache and guilt, but can not help but be angry.
It was her fault that she couldn’t give Keira a proper family, and she blames herself for it all the time. But now that Alex Brown is out of the country for treatment, Joe Wright can’t be there for them forever.
Eva Taylor is a good girl, and Joe Wright has done so much for her to meet his match, how can she let Keira ruin it?
“Keira Wright!” she yelled, lecturing angrily, “I’ve told you many times that Papa Joe has a life of his own and can’t be around you forever.”
“Emma, stop it!”
Joe Wright interrupted with a frown, seeing Keira in his arms, firmly covering her ears, crying, her face red, her emotions close to collapse, he hurriedly stroked her back and walked a short distance away to comfort her.
Emma Rosy stood still, taking in the various glances from people passing by, eyes already moist, but biting her lips tightly, refusing to shed a tear.
Keira was so emotional that Joe Wright had to take her away first, and Emma Rosy walked alone in the hospital garden, frustrated.
Keira is her life, and hurting Keira is like stabbing her in the heart, but she has no choice.
It was late in the evening when Emma Rosy arrived home.
Master Wright was in the living room watching the news, Keira should be resting in her room, Joe Wright came downstairs from his work, and when he saw her, his expression was subtle, as if he wanted to say something but didn’t know how.
“Let’s eat, I’ll go get Keira .”
Emma Rosy bypassed him and went upstairs.
When she got home Keira cried so much that her eyelids were still puffy when she was carried into the dining room, Emma Rosy put her on a nearby chair, but she darted over to Joe Wright and buried her head, refusing to look at her.
“Let Joe take care of Keira, you should take a break and eat.” Master Wright was afraid she would feel bad.
People who have never been parents will never understand what it’s like to be a parent, just like Joe Wright, who has raised Keira for three years and become her nominal father, but what Emma Rosy is feeling right now, he can’t understand it all.
The good thing is that Master Wright understands.
Emma Rosy’s nose is sore and she tries to calm down for a moment before handing Keira the plate in front of her, which contains the fish she has finished picking out.
Keira was still sick, and the maid had made steamed anchovies according to Keira’s preference. Joe Wright had tried for half a day, but had not been able to handle a piece of fish, while Emma Rosy was doing this in silence.
But Keira looked at it and didn’t reach for it.
“You’re still good, I’m probably too old and my eyes are blurry.” Joe Wright deliberately joked to adjust the atmosphere, and then took the plate.
Emma Rosy nodded and answered naturally: “Since you know you’re old, you should market yourself quickly so that Grandpa won’t have to worry about you.”
Keira had finally stopped crying, but why did she bring it up again?
Joe Wright looked at her with shock and confusion.
Master Wright, however, understood Emma Rosy’s meaning, and slowly agreed: “Emma is right, the house is too cold, and more people can come in to liven it up.”
He had no choice but to respond in a perfunctory manner, and spent the rest of the day eating quietly, not daring to start a conversation again.
After the meal, Emma Rosy took a reluctant Keira to the bathroom to wash her hands, Joe Wright guarded the door with anxiety, saw Keira wash her hands and fled to the bedroom, finally could not suppress curiosity.
“She’s in a bad mood, so why are you gambling with her?”
Emma Rosy threw the paper towel into the trash can and looked up to the second floor: “I didn’t gamble.”
No matter how childish she was, she wasn’t going to get into a fight with a three-year-old, not to mention that it was her own daughter. She just wants to physically teach Keira that everything in life cannot be as it should be, and to put it more cruelly, most of the time in life has to be spent in a bad way, crying and screaming will not solve the problem, and running away is even more useless.
Joe Wright naturally understands these principles.
“But Keira is still too young, so it’s okay to take your time and educate her later, there’s no rush.
Alex Brown has just left, the little one’s fever has not completely subsided, such a time to educate her, indeed too cold, but only at this time education, she will be enough to understand.
