“It’s because of her that I’m so helpless. It’s because of her I thrashed this whole place, it’s because of her that…. I just.. can’t think straight anymore. ”
“Well, I’m sure that whatever reason Miranda had for dumping you, it was a pretty good one.”
“What???” He hadn’t expected those words from her, he’s always known his sister to be so shrapmouthed, but still, he hadn’t expected her to say such words to hurt him more, especially when seeing he’s in this state.
“How dere you, Sandy?”
“How dare I what? Speak the truth…? How dare I try to tell you how unfair you’ve been to Miranda? How dare I try to tell you the same things I’ve been trying to tell you since? Huh, brother…?”
He didn’t answer, because his mouth was left hanging upon hearing the things she said, anger disappeared from his eyes and was replaced with bewilderment. What the hell was she talking about? What did she mean by him being unfair to Miranda?
As if reading his mind, she continued. “Miranda wanted you Walden, she liked you, and she desperately wanted this union to work between the both of you!!! But only reason she is now married to someone else instead of you is because of you, Walden! You are the one to blame for all of this, not her!”
Finally finding some words to say, “what do you mean I’m the one to blame? She’s the one who left me for someone else, she’s the one who left me heartbroken. I’m the victim here, not her!”
“That’s what you think, but you’re the one who did it first, you’re the one who left her heartbroken for someone else first! She became the victim first!”
“Enough with your accusations Sandy, now you’ve gone too far! I never left Miranda for anyone and I never will!!!”
“Yes, you did, on every night, she’d tried to reach you, she came here as often as possible, wanting to see you, but you’d already given instructions to your guards not be disturbed by anyone. Most of the times when you were with Samara…”
“She’d come to my room most of the time, in tears, because the guards wouldn’t let her in… because she’d be hearing Samara making sex noises from outside YOUR bedroom.”
He’d always heard Miranda complaining about it, but he never thought how serious her feelings were, he never realized it, now until now, when he’s hearing it from a different mouth…
“Miranda would leave here in tears most if the time, knowing you didn’t love her, always assuring herself that it was all because of her people, thinking things might even be different when the both of you got married….”
Sandy had finished dressing his wounds now, but was still serving him the bitter medicine of truth.
“But then the wedding came, and you bailed on her on that day too, still because of the same reason, the same reason you’ve always neglected her… Because. Of. Samara.”
Hes never realized this, he’s never ever thought that his sister had the power to say such words to make him dumbfounded and speechless, he just remained there, his mouth agape while Sandy closed up the first aid box, and proceeded to take her leave…
“Because of all you did to her, because of how YOU treated her, Miranda has left you for someone that couldn’t have been a more better fit for her happiness, and I CANNOT but wish her so much more than she would have ever had with you…”
Carefully about to pass through the rubble as she spoke, “If you expect me to feel sorry for you because of this, better know now that’s the last thing I’d do.”
The door closed, as Sandy left him all alone to keep wallowing in his misery.
**********
It was evening, and Beta Renard had just returned from the fields, he wouldn’t waste a whole day of training especially after he didn’t later go on his intended journey earlier. But then, his mind had been totally occupied by someone else today; the lady he’d saved.
He’d carried her in his arms and brought her back here, though she was unconscious, one couldn’t miss the signs of stress and worry written all over her beautiful face. She was in such a pitiful state, so fragile, so tender, poor lady had appeared to be badly beaten up by the cruel outside world.
At least she was back to safety, he’s glad he saw her on time according to the healer, that was the only comfort he could give his heart, as he’d had so much concern for her.
Having returned and heard that she’d woken up, he urged himself to go and see her, she’d be doing much better now no doubt, but still, he wanted to go and see her, he wants to ensure she’s okay before his mind can rest.
He reached her chambers and knocked on her door, a minute passed before he heard her slow response from inside, allowing him to enter. Opening her door, he met her lying on her bed, about to go to bed before he came in.
“I’m…. Sorry for disturbing….” he quickly apologized.
“No, it’s fine. I haven’t slept yet.”
“Oh, well then you should, you were really weak when I saw you at the border this morning.”
“So, you were the one….? The one who saved me and brought me back here?”
“Yes, I was. I’d promised the alpha that I’d leave our terrain to go out and find you myself since he was so concerned about you, and I didn’t want him to risk his life.”
“So you went instead? You preferred to risk yours instead?”
He nodded, “yes. I’m a loyal servant, and it’s what I was sworn to do for this pack. My life means nothing if I cannot protect those I care about.”
“So who were you really protecting? Who was it you cared about?”
He began to fidget with his words, “I um… don’t understand what you’re asking, Miss… ”
“Who was it you really wanted to risk your life for? Was it me or alpha Damian?” She shot him an inquisitive glare, he felt like her eyes could penetrate deep into his face.
He couldn’t answer the question, he didn’t want her to get the wrong idea that he cared about the alpha more by choosing Damian and he also didn’t want her to think that he was interested in her in a different way by choosing her.
What to do? He asked his wolf.
Scram.
“I’m sorry um…. Miss….”
“Katrina.”
“Oh, I’m sorry miss Katrina… But I’d hate to interrupt your sleeping time by remaining here…. Thank you for allowing me to visit you…”
She let out a small grin as she watched him quickly hurry out of the room. She couldn’t help but chuckle at the man’s stupidity. Fool thinks he’ll ever have a chance with her, he doesn’t know that her heart belongs to no one but alpha Damian.
Only one person stands in the way of her and her true love, and she’s about remove that person out of their lives for good.
