Chapter 26: Having Dinner Together

May intentionally came to tell her about this. She had just returned to her room and was taking a shower, her hair still wet, when she heard the faint knocking. Opening the door, she found May standing there, looking furtive. Seeing her, May lowered her voice, “What’s wrong? What’s happened?”
“Alpha just returned, he looks very exhausted.”
Emma suppressed a smile, “Then let him rest, why not?”
“He won’t rest, he has been working continuously for a long time, and these days he hasn’t eaten anything. You should go and check on him.”
Emma thought to herself, “She really made a great effort to make me genuinely become friends with Patrick.”
“But Jennifer is still there.”
“The lady won’t be with him; even if she wanted to, alpha would refuse.”
Emma walked out and saw Dimitri and Jennifer talking on the stairs, “They really seem to have a bad relationship.”
“Yes. Nelson is the biggest problem between them; alpha is still not satisfied with Nelson. But the lady is very fond of Nelson, she would rather be with Nelson than her son.”
“Leaving her son? When did that happen?” Emma keenly grasped the point.
“Didn’t I tell you? At that time, the lady had not yet bonded with Nelson. In opposition to everyone who was against her bonding with Nelson, she left the castle without a word, scaring everyone. Many people from the clan were mobilized to find her, and finally, she was found in a small hotel with Nelson. The elders were furious; they wanted to immediately drive Nelson out of the Silver Moon Pack, but alpha disagreed. The lady’s mental state was unstable at the time, and he didn’t want to upset her.”
Emma thought, Nelson really is despicable for maliciously abducting the Luna of another pack.
“So in the end, Nelson successfully bonded with the lady, but alpha refused to be close to her anymore. He wouldn’t discuss anything with her; in a sense, alpha has been no different from an orphan for these few years.”
After saying that, May turned to look at Emma, “If I speak ill of Nelson like this, will you be upset? I shouldn’t be talking about him, but…” She sighed, “After he came to the Silver Moon Pack, he brought a lot of trouble to the pack. That’s a fact.”
Emma didn’t care at all if others discussed Nelson’s good or bad in front of her; to her, Nelson was always a stranger.
“That can only mean that he indeed is an annoying person and only brings trouble to others.”
May breathed a sigh of relief, “I was worried you would be offended.”
“I don’t like him either, it’s okay.”
Just as they were speaking, Patrick had already gone upstairs, and Jennifer had gone downstairs in the opposite direction. May quickly bumped into Emma’s shoulder and handed her a sandwich and milk from the kitchen, “There’s a sandwich in the bag made according to his dietary habits. Take it over, don’t let it slip.”
Emma chuckled and followed Patrick upstairs with the bag in hand.
Patrick didn’t know how to describe his recent state. The busyness had made his nerves sensitive; the sounds he heard were amplified several times more than usual, and the noise from outside would penetrate through the walls and windows into his ears, but he couldn’t stop.
“I’m very tired,” he admitted. Now with no one else around, he could speak the truth, without worrying if his mother would question him, and not caring if there would be different looks. “I know this is what an excellent alpha should do, constantly learning, constantly enriching oneself, solving problems. But I’m very tired.”
It wasn’t just physical; it was mental. He had no emotional support now, no inner drive. He was like a machine named Alpha Patrick, doing mechanically whatever others asked him to do.
The Moon Goddess’s gift was not appearing, and his mother’s constant urging for a partner made him doubt: Has the Moon Goddess abandoned me, refusing to give me a destined partner?
The accumulation of pheromones often made him tense and suspicious.
“I have no support from my family. My mother, these days, you can also understand, she lives in her own world, too busy to care about others, even me. I just hope Nelson can take care of her. I also have no partner, unable to receive the comfort of pheromones, and I have no one to confide in.”
The wind tousled their hair, and Emma didn’t interrupt. She quietly listened to this boy’s troubles; at this moment, she was willing to keep all his secrets and embrace all his vulnerabilities.
“But many times, I don’t know who I am. The loneliness overwhelms me. I am like a small boat sailing alone at sea, ready to be overturned by storms and waves at any moment. I have no friends, no lovers, notrusted people. My life is dull and monotonous. Apart from this body and my noble status, I can’t believe that anyone would love me.”
For some reason, Patrick felt inclined to trust Emma. She was calm and gentle, like an open sea, able to accept all his hardships.
And as Emma looked at this helpless alpha, his vulnerability made her empathize. She felt the intense pain almost engulfing her. “How can you have no friends? The Silver Moon Pack must have betas, and betas are the people alphas trust the most. Don’t you trust your beta?”
His beta, Patrick remembered, his own beta, his close friend. But they hadn’t spoken for a long time. The other was busy with other matters, and it seemed he was just hanging onto the title of an assistant. Even the reports were printed and sent to him as files.
“I don’t know. I do have my beta, but we haven’t met in a long time. We used to be best friends, but I don’t remember when we stopped having any communication, even through words or eye contact. Our mind link also stopped working, and I can’t read his mind. We are separated.”
This made Emma feel a pang of sorrow, “How did this happen? Losing the mind link must be very painful, right?”
“Yes,” Patrick said despondently, “My father didn’t see my wolf; he didn’t have the chance to establish a mind link with my wolf. But my beta could, and my wolf wasn’t stable; often I couldn’t make it come out. Later when our mind link broke, I never had the chance to awaken my wolf again. I don’t know if it disappeared or fell back into a slumber. I can feel my mother’s thoughts continuously, but I can’t establish a mind link with anyone else.”
Emma gently placed her hand on his back, “Don’t be disheartened, Patrick, everything will take time. You’re just going through a rough patch.”
Patrick slowly turned to look at her, “Is it just that?”
