“Alpha’s really angry.” Lucas pointed out as we each took a seat inside the car, him in the driver’s seat and I in the passenger’s. “He just wanted some privacy. It’s between them both so it’s not our business.”
“You think?” I rolled my eyes, my arms folding over my chest. After Kasan made us leave, we walked around outside for a while then Lucas brought me back all the way to the car so we could rest up a bit. I really wanted to stay but he was determined to give them privacy and I honestly didn’t want to fight with him over something like being too inquisitive. And annoyingly, I didn’t even get to grab my gun!
Anyway, it hasn’t been that long since we left there, but I’m feeling quite anxious. Kasan doesn’t have any chill, I doubt he’d ask Kenley any questions before ripping him to shreds and plus, the dark look in his eyes definitely meant death. I don’t think I’ve ever seen him that angry.
But they’re family, he’d go easy on him, won’t he?
I for one, don’t believe for a second that the dude back there was telling the truth. But I’m still open to be surprised. It’s not like I care much about Kenley anyway. He talks too much and even when he’s silent, he still manages to be annoying.
“Do you also think Kenley’s one of them?” I asked, face questioning as I looked over at Lucas.
He shrugged in response before turning in his seat and glancing back at me, a pensive look swallowing his face. “I can’t say anything because I only know as much as I’ve been told but back there… even though you defended him a bit, he still glared at you pretty hard. Aren’t you supposed to be grateful in that kind of situation?… especially when the Alpha appears so upset…”
“He did?” My eyebrows scrunched up. “I would’ve kept my mouth shut if I’d seen. That fucking prick!”
“Maybe he has some sort of severe brother complex? …so he’s working with them to get rid of you? I haven’t been here long but I know Alpha doesn’t treat him much differently from the others despite him being human and his blood relative, meanwhile he doesn’t let you do much if it puts you in danger and threatens anyone who comes near you. Does that make sense or am I thinking too hard?”
“So, you’re saying he’s jealous?” I couldn’t help but snicker. “That sounds plausible yet stupid. But you said it’s not our business, so I won’t think on it.”
“You’re right but if he’s really working with them to get rid of you, he’d become our enemy and we’d have no choice but to kill him.”
I frowned. “When did you get so comfortable with killing? You’re supposed to be as pure as a newborn baby.”
At that, an unexpected chuckle rumbled up his chest along with a small breakout of a smile on his lips. The smile made the side of his eyes crinkle and even though it wasn’t as bright as I’d have liked, his face looked a little less ‘dead’ than usual. Like a creep, I found myself liking it so much that it became contagious.
“I hoped I had stayed that way too.” He gave another chuckle, this one was a little over on the gloomy side as compared with the first. “I guess both you and I have the same wish then.” He ran his hand over the back of his neck, looking away.
My head tilted. For some reason, it doesn’t feel like we’re talking about the same thing and that disturbs me. What did he mean by that?
“You told me that time at the infirmary that you wanted to visit your parents?”
“Our parents.” I corrected. “But what does that have to do with anything?”
“I can take you there. Alpha didn’t give me the go ahead but I do know where they are being kept. If you want, we can visit for a bit.”
My eyes dropped to my lap, hesitating. It’s great that I’m getting the chance to visit them without Kasan behind me but I don’t want to go with Lucas either… in fact, I’d much prefer Kasan. Then again, I do want mom and dad to finally meet him after all these years and catch up a bit.
“It looks like Alpha sent a few wolves to follow us.” He glanced to his left, “I’ve noticed that their eyes have never left us. If we do go, they’ll be on our tail in case anything happens. What do you say?”
I followed his gaze and made eye contact with a few of the tens of wolves scattered over the area. They looked away the second they noticed me staring. Those guys do seem to be keeping an eye on us. I guess I could just let him take me there.
I should be getting used to Lucas by now anyway. He’ll only feel guilty if I continue keeping my distance.
“Let’s go then. But shouldn’t we let Kasan know we’re leaving for a sec?”
“He won’t mind since the current matter is pretty urgent. Plus, you have a lot of bodyguards.” His fingers reached for the car keys which was sitting on the seat next to him before stuffing it into the keyhole. “But why do you want to visit them anyway? There’s no doubt that they’re safe where they are.”
“I’m just checking up on them.” I shrugged. That was half true but whatever. “I haven’t seen them in ages and besides, you all could bond or something. They’ll be happy to see you.”
He nodded but didn’t show a shred of excitement. Does he want to go or not? I mean, he could at least feign some excitement for my sake.

I shifted uncomfortably as I laid across the back seat, my eyes closed and my hands clasped on my chest.
We had been driving for a while to the point where I fear that I was being kidnapped, which was ridiculous since Kasan’s men were still on our tail. But seriously why does it have to be so far away?! I’ve been fighting sleep for fucking ages!
Not too long ago, we even entered the town where people moved around like bees. What was really irritating though, was the fact that their chattering was loud enough to make it feel as if their mouths were like an inch away from my ear. I had to roll up the windows and lay across the seat to avoid the stares the people had been sending us while still trying to tune them out. It’s too bad, this car isn’t tinted.
“Are we there yet? We’ve been driving for ages. Are you sure you know where they are?”
I sat up in my seat and quickly rolled down the windows. We were out of town and now in some kind of private driveway, similar to the one that leads up to Kasan’s house.
“We’re close.” Lucas said, “It’s just up ahead, we’ll be there in less than three minutes.”
Nodding, I rolled down the window and stuck my head just for the fun of it and smiled slightly as the wind travelled through my hair and whipped against my skin. I looked around and basically, there were just lines of well-trimmed trees running along either side. Nonetheless, the place looked pretty good. I expect the house to be another mansion like Kasan’s.
“I should get a secluded place like this later on, of course with Kasan’s money. His house is practically crawling with guys, so we need our own space, don’t you think?”
He shook his head immediately, like the very second I asked the question. “I like it there… with others like me.”
I frowned. If he had given it a thought, I would have felt a little less offended, but the immediate rejection hit me pretty damn hard.
“But what abo-”
My words were cut short when a strong wind slapped against my face, and along with it came a sudden weird scent. It was faint and I could hardly pick up on what it was, so I ended taking a deep breath more than thrice until I finally figured it out.
Smoke…
“Why do I smell smoke?!”
