not so bad

Sarah pressed her back against the wall and stuck her head out to peep over the banister. When her eyes didn’t catch any sight of Damon Kalesto, she hurried down and tiptoed into the kitchen.
Why was she moving around like ninja? Well there was only one reason why she desperately needed to do what she was doing… She needed to stay out of Damon’s sight. What she did yesterday and what she said, was totally not something that would’ve happened had she been sober. She was an embarrassment to her own self. Which was why she had been hiding out in Trixie and Haguy’s room ever since she woke up.
And she would’ve been completely out of Damon’s sight had one of her so-called friends brought her a bottle of water to quench her thirst. They traitorously refused to go downstairs, since apparently they too were in hiding because they thought Damon would punish them for getting her drunk. That was utterly ridiculous though. Damon was ruthless and all, but who would punish women because of something so little?
All that aside, she was in deep shit! When she passed by Damon’s room, he was nowhere to be seen. Neither had she seen him anywhere downstairs. Maybe he was hiding and waiting for the right moment to pounce. Or maybe he was sharpening the butcher knife he’d use to peel off her skin.
Sarah cursed under her breath at the thought. She shouldn’t have said those stupid things about him being unattractive and emotionless… nor should she have made that stupid deal with him. What was she thinking? Well she wasn’t thinking… that was the problem. Alcohol was definitely not for her. Rubbing the space between her eyes, Sarah opened the fridge and took out a small bottle of water. She twisted off the cap and began drinking it whilst she turned around and walked out of the kitchen. But just as she was passing the living room and was ready to rush up the stairs, the clearing of a throat drew her full attention. She stiffened, her feet coming to a stop on the soft mat beneath it.
She turned her head slowly, her eyes dreading the figure she would see. When her eyes spotted him, it was just like she predicted… the embarrassment was all there and if she could, she would’ve just dug a hole then disappear right then. Damon was seated on one of the sofas around the small table in the middle of the living room and was sipping slowly from a glass that contained what looked to be liquor. His legs were crossed, his black hair was flowing freely and his hazel eyes were looking straight at her. “It’s good to finally see you sober, Sarah. Take a seat.”
Sarah wanted to stand in place, she really wanted to, but the way he said his words, prevented her from disobeying him. And after a few deep breaths, Sarah turned her feet in his direction and walked towards the sofa before slowly taking a seat. “M-Morning.” She said quietly, her eyes glued to her lap where she was fiddling with her fingers.
“I never said you could sit on the sofa.” Damon pointed out, resting his chin on his fist and his elbow on the sofa.
Sarah’s eyes widened and she quickly shuffled out of the sofa and unto her feet. “Sorry. You s-said I should t-take a seat so I thought th-”
“I meant on my lap.”
Her jaw slackened and the rest of her words died on her tongue.
“You made a promise yesterday so why do you look so surprised? I’m sure you remember it all since you kept avoiding me all morning.”
Sarah looked away. “I w-wasn’t avoiding y-you.”
Damon nodded though it was obvious that he didn’t agree with her one bit. “You avoided me, you just stuttered, you refused to sit on my lap, and you looked away from me… You’ve done everything you promised to stop doing.” He stated, uncrossing his legs and leaning forward. “You shouldn’t have agreed to it, if you weren’t gonna stand by it, Sarah.”
Sarah began twiddling her fingers once again, her eyes hesitantly travelling back over to him. It was quite sad that Damon brought up their stupid deal, but it was fortunate that he wasn’t angry, well he didn’t seem angry in her opinion. “I get everything else b-but what does r-refusing to sit on y-your lap have to do w-with anything? Besides I d-didn’t refuse.”
“Then why are you standing over there and not sitting here?” He gestured to his lap with his eyes when she didn’t make any move to step forward. “Come on, we don’t have all day.”
Sarah’s hesitance was quite great this time around, but she sucked it up and took baby steps over to him nonetheless. There wasn’t anything wrong with sitting in his lap if she was to be completely honest. They were mates after all. Isn’t this what mates normally do? Run around holding hands and kissing every chance they got. But Damon was the Alpha King, Alpha of all Alphas… so their relationship was bound to be different, maybe not a good different either. Damon was as emotionless as anyone could ever be… while she was scared of any and everything. Sitting in his lap would probably be one of the few things that made them actually seem like mates. So rather than declining, Sarah made a bold decision that she would probably regret soon.
When she neared him, Damon reclined in his seat and stretched out both his arms against the back of the sofa. She almost gave in to the urge to roll her eyes at him. Turning around, she slowly lowered herself unto his lap… and as usual, her face was as red as a tomato.
“See?” Damon said, “Wasn’t so hard, was it?” He rose his brow. “Try not to get so flustered anymore and don’t stutter every time you talk. You can just talk to me like you do with Trixie and Haguy. I won’t bite.”
Sarah shifted on his lap as she struggled to ignore the feel of his body against hers as well as his warm breath that was hitting her skin… and not to forget whatever the hell he was saying. It all made her head spin… in a good way.
When his hands grabbed her hips abruptly and he grunted, Sarah gulped. “You shouldn’t move around if you don’t want what comes afterwards.” He warned and she was left in a dumb state for a while until she finally got what he was saying. Her eyes widened and her body went completely still untop of him.
“What about you!?” Sarah said accusingly, quickly trying to change the subject. “You’re still a-as emotionless as a-always. That wasn’t t-the deal!”
“Things take time.” He reminded grimly, “Have you eaten?” Damon tried to use the same tactic on her by changing the subject but Sarah quickly caught on.
“Try smiling… like a really big smile.” She suggested, holding in the urge to laugh when she saw the expression that grew on his face. His whole face had drained of colour. She knew all too well that he hated smiling and that was the very reason why she suggested it. If he wanted her to do things that she doesn’t normally do, then he had to do the same as well. That makes it fair. “I sat in y-your lap, so now y-you have to smile. O-Or can’t you do something a-as simple as that?”
Damon clenched his jaw. He was against it completely a few seconds ago, but the challenge in her tone was enough to get him riled up. He could do anything if he wanted to. So how dare she underestimate his capabilities?!
“Fine.” He wasn’t sure if he was thinking straight, but one thing led to another and he inched his lips upwards, one side after another. He didn’t know what he was doing, he just knew that his lips were supposed to spread across his face. And that’s exactly what he did, but he wasn’t sure if he had done it right. The feeling was too awkward.
But when Sarah turned around and her eyes bulged out of their sockets, he knew for sure that he; Damon Kalesto had smiled for such a stupid reason. Day by day, he was doing more and more humane things. If it was back then, he wouldn’t have smiled even if the moon goddess herself asked him to. But now, he was smiling because his mate requested it. He wasn’t sure what kind of lame Alpha King he was becoming…
But smiling? It wasn’t so bad.
Mate? That unexpectedly wasn’t so bad either.
