Chapter 29 The Last Straw

Book:The Awakening Published:2024-5-1

“This is the last straw, Hayden. I have ignored everything else you did to me, but not this. I can’t believe you just tried to kill Derek, and for what?” Silver fumed.
“I don’t owe you any explanation. It’s your damn fault anyway.” Hayden said and turned to leave but Silver pulled him back.
“DON’T YOU DARE WALK OUT ON ME! You won’t blame me for your misdeeds and then walk away just like that. And you will tell me right now why you almost killed him because I’m sure it’s for a really stupid reason.” Silver said to a scowling Hayden.
“Stupid? You’ve been spending all your time with him. I banned him from going into your room, but of course you must always find a way to defy me so you went to his room instead.” Hayden growled.
“Have you seriously been spying on me? Is that how low you’ve gone? A whole Alpha of the Dark moon pack, pathetic.” Silver growled.
“What’s pathetic is you trying so hard to get into another male’s bed!” he yelled.
Everyone else silently watched their shouting match.
“Trying?” Silver asked with a chuckle.
“If I wanted Derek, I would have him in my bed without even lifting a finger. I only need to say the word. The same goes for other males in your pack, I’m sure you’ve seen the way they look at me.”
“So that’s what you want? To be jumping from one bed to the other like a …”
“Don’t you dare complete that statement, Hayden. I will not add insults to the list of things I tolerate from you.” Silver warned with a glare and he closed his mouth.
“And excuse me for spending time with someone that actually likes my company. What have you done since I got here? You ignored me, and avoided me like I had a contagious disease you were afraid of getting. If it were up to you, we wouldn’t even breathe the same air. Even if I decide to have a new male in my bed every night, IT’S NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS! You have no right to question my actions. After all, I’m just your guest.” She made the last statement with a mocking tone to ridicule him, and he growled in response.
They glared at each other silently for several minutes, then Hayden sighed.
“I’m sorry.”
“Sorry? Shove your sorry where the sun doesn’t shine, asshole. I’m out of here.” She whirled and wanted to stomp off, but her way was blocked by one of the warriors.
“You’ve been very disrespectful to our Alpha.” The male said.
“And how is that any of your concern?” Silver asked the male with a scowl on her face.
“Apologise to him.” The male said and Silver laughed.
“Over my dead, rotting, corpse will I apologise because you said so. Your Alpha has been disrespectful to me, where’s my apology? A proper apology, not the half-hearted nonsense he did a while ago.”
“Why should he apologise to you? I don’t care who you are outside our pack, but you’re nothing here, just a bed warmer.”
A growl came from behind Silver as the male made that statement.
“Don’t insult her.” Hayden said through gritted teeth as he walked closer.
“Oh please, let him speak. He is saying what they all think, it’s not something new. Whose fault is it that everyone here thinks they can talk to me like I’m a hired maid you bought to service yourself? It’s definitely not mine.” She said to Hayden.
“I know what having a mate feels like, Hayden. That is what makes this stupid bond we have even more aggravatin, g because it doesn’t compare to my previous experience at all. Am I not supposed to be happier? My wolf is confused. She, like other animals, doesn’t care for the trivialities of the human half. So she can’t understand what’s happening, and why she’s being treated badly. I miss my mate so badly, and so does she.”
“I’m y…”
“Don’t even say it, Hayden.” Silver said when Hayden was about to say that he was her mate.
“Don’t say it because you don’t believe it. If you really believed it, you wouldn’t act this way no matter what. I don’t know what silly reason you tell yourself that makes you think it’s okay to do all you’ve been doing, but to me, your actions are inexcusable.”
“You don’t understand.” Hayden sighed and tried to hold her hand but she stepped away.
“I don’t need to. The time for that has passed. I would have been willing to listen, to try and understand whatever it is you say I can’t understand. But you were never willing to talk, or even try at least to explain. I regret leaving my cell. At least there, I didn’t have to deal with all this drama. My life was simpler there.” Silver said and turned away from him.
As Hayden watched her walk away, he realised just how stupid he had been. He felt so bad that she preferred being locked in a cell to being around him. And it was all his fault. His wolf was angry with him too. The animal couldn’t just understand why he was being kept away from his mate.
He ran his hands through his hair and then turned to Mara.
“Gather everyone at the square, I have an announcement to make.”
“Yes Alpha.”

As Mara walked away to do as Hayden had said, Carl followed her.
“Do you think she’s his mate?” Mara asked.
“We lost our Luna. It’s not possible.”
“It happens sometimes, second chance mates. It makes sense. Haven’t you seen the way he looks at her? And she’s the only one who has ever been able to calm his wolf when he’s near feral.”
“It’s not possible, Mara. Maybe he likes her, but she can’t be his mate.”
