Stella Grace was worried throughout the dinner. She sneaked glances at Jasper Milton as they ate.
He was very self-conscious, slowly enjoying his food. He glanced up at Stella, looking her straight in the eyes.
Stella felt a little guilty and looked away.
He plopped a piece of steak onto Stella’s plate.
“Eat more, you’re too thin. It won’t be easy for you to get pregnant if you’re underweight,” Jasper said in a serious tone.
Stella blushed.
Pregnant?
What was going through his mind?
Eli looked suspiciously at Jasper, then at Stella, then back at Jasper.
He was still looking at Stella as if he only had eyes for her.
He lost his memory and found her again. Was that love?
“Chief, do you like Stella?” Eli asked bluntly.
Stella nervously held her fork tight and lowered her head, pretending not to care about his answer.
Just when she thought he wasn’t going to answer, he did. “Yes.”
Stella’s hands shook.
Eli held her hand and looked at Jasper. “What if your parents do not agree with this? Your family is influential but Stella has nothing to back her up.”
“With my current status, I have full control over my marriage. No one will interfere.” Jasper promised.
Eli smiled and looked at Stella.
Stella looked downcast, she was not happy at all.
“When are you going to marry Stella then? You lost your memory, but Stella didn’t. Both of you were thinking about this before. You have to be responsible for her.”
“Eli,” Stella interrupted. “I don’t need anyone be responsible for me.”
Eli immediately shut her mouth when she saw Stella was getting angry.
“I will,” Jasper promised.
Stella gave a faint smile, but her eyes were inscrutable. “Do you think I can’t support myself, or do you think I can’t find a boyfriend? I don’t need you to be responsible for me. I can still live a good life. I can also find a man who loves me. I am not a weakling who needs anyone to help me.”
Jasper’s eyes dimmed. “Who else do you want to look for?” he asked venomously.
Eli saw Jasper was about to blow his top, so she quickly said, “Stella didn’t mean that she was going to look for someone else. She meant that if you don’t want her anymore, she can still find herself a boyfriend.”
“Did I say I don’t want you?” Jasper stared straight at Stella.
“I don’t need you,” Stella replied.
“You don’t want me, do you?” Jasper slammed his fork on the table and left Eli’s place.
Eli watched him go and turned to Stella. She was anxious. “What are you doing? Everything was fine before this, wasn’t it? Jasper might be a mean person, but he always keeps his promise. He will definitely take care of you if he promises you to. Stella, I think you’re at fault.”
“Eli, I know what I’m doing,” Stella said rationally.
“You’ll drive him away if you do this.” Eli rushed to the window and saw Jasper smoking under the street lamp. “Stella, he hasn’t left yet. It’s still not too late.”
“If a person can be easily driven away, do you think the relationship will last long? Forget about it. I’ll wash the dishes.” Stella went to the kitchen with the dishes in her hand.
Stella’s phone rang.
It was Greg Miles. She answered the phone. “Yes?”
“Have you had dinner?” Greg asked.
“I already ate, I’m washing the dishes now. Why?” Stella was puzzled.
“Let’s have supper together? Lobster is in season now, I’ll treat you to lobsters. Ha ha.”
Stella was a little impatient. “Tell me, what happened? Get straight to the point.”
Greg frowned and whispered, “My case has been put on hold by someone and that person asked me to ask you out.”
Stella was confused. “Who is it?”
“Your ex-husband.” Greg felt sorry.
Stella was startled.
Frederick Addington took Greg’s phone. “Stella.”
“After so many years, you haven’t changed at all. You still like threatening people to make things go your way,” Stella sneered sarcastically.
“I just want to see you but I was afraid that you wouldn’t come. Anyway, I may have good news for you,” Frederick said softly.
“If I don’t come, will you interfere in Greg’s case?” Stella asked coldly.
“I didn’t mean to interfere in anything. I just want to see you.”
“Then don’t disturb him. It’s late now. I’ll treat you to lunch at noon tomorrow,” Stella said.
She knew Frederick well, he would not give up until he got what he wanted. They were bound to meet, it was just a matter of time.
She was tired and frustrated today. She might look fine but her heart was heavy, as though there was a pile of stones pressing on it.
“Okay, see you tomorrow. I’ll pick you up at the research center. Good night,” Frederick said softly.
Stella hung up, kept the plates in the cabinet, and turned around.
Eli stood at the door and looked at her. “I’m going to tell you my opinion. Frederick is the prodigal son come home. He hasn’t had any scandals or even a relationship over the past three years. He was waiting for you to come back.
Jasper is a high-rank official. He’s dull, stoic and he lost his memory. If he didn’t, he might be a good choice since his parents can’t stop him now.”
Stella lowered her head.
She remembered what Benjamin Levis told her about Frederick. What a coincidence, she could ask him about that tomorrow.
“Let nature take its course. Things are ever-changing. We can never be prepared for anything. Let’s just take things easy,” Stella smiled.
“Stella, I think you’ve changed. You used to be very stubborn and liked to hold on to what you had. You’re looking at things at a broader scope now.” Eli couldn’t help but admire her.
“Well, I am still stubborn but sometimes it just takes a toll on me. So, I would rather let go.” Stella shrugged. “I have to go now. It’s late.”
Eli hugged Stella and said, “You can move in with me. Don’t you think it’s expensive to stay at a hotel?”
Stella pointed at Eli ‘s nose and said, “You stay at the military base six days a week. I will be left here alone. There are many people at the hotel and it is close to my workplace too. I have no problem staying in a hotel with my salary now.”
“Okay, I’ll sleepover in your room on my day off.”
“Okay,” Stella said with a smile.
When she walked down the stairs and someone grabbed her arm.
Jasper pulled her away.
She thought he had left.
“What are you doing?” Stella questioned.
“You’ll know when we get there.” He shoved her into the car, frowned, and quickly started the car…
