70. Forced to Confess

Book:BROKEN : Satanic Verses Published:2024-5-1

“This is impossible! This is impossible!” Dev flips hands and looks at her face. The changes she experienced became something more sinister than the terror she was facing.
Her heart was beating wildly. The incident beyond reason became a big question that lingered in the skull. Dev is silent, transfixed, and neutralizes her frozen brain. She doesn’t care about the dangers that threaten her anymore.
The sound of pounding on the door rang in her ears, several times during her indifference. Her limbs just gave a response when a low screech sounded. Dev immediately hides as a silhouette of someone’s body is seen from the slightly open doorway.
“Devada!” The male voice in the gloom was Elios.
On the right side of the cupboard, there is Dev’s heartbeat which is getting more and more out of tune with Elios’ furious steps. In hiding, she could see a mix of shock and worry spread across Elios’ face.
“Devada!” Elios shouted as he checked all corners of the room. Dev took the opportunity to quickly get out of the chaotic room.
Crack!
“Shit!” She cursed in her heart. She forgot that all the things scattered on the floor would make a sound if stepped on. Thanks to that Elios’ attention was diverted.
“Devada!” called Elios as he gently swung his shoe in the direction where Dev was silent.
At that time, the gust of wind had not subsided. The glass window still hit the wall. Dev takes the initiative to create a diversion with her magical powers.
The focal point was directed at the flower vase that had rolled over completely behind Elios. Within seconds, the vase flew swiftly into the window pane and shattered both of them. A deafening sound made Elios turn around.
“Who?” Elios seemed to be getting closer to it, but all he saw was the twisting of the curtains pulled apart and the glass windows that were no longer intact.
Elios’ busyness is used by Dev to go using her ability to move places quickly. Unfortunately, her actions left an imprint that the young latina could feel.
“Like something’s wrong. I have to check,” said Elios.
On the monitor screen, Elios was transfixed. It shows Dev who is experiencing a strange event. The video suddenly falters and reappears showing the scene of Elios entering the room. That’s when the recording stops.
“I installed expensive CCTV. What makes it look like a broken recorder?” He cupped his five fingers to his mouth for a moment, then got up from the chair.
On the other place, Dev is still running to hide herself. Tracing these artistic spaces is like a thief. Crossing the book room, the corner of her eye accidentally saw Nania sitting dumbfounded.
Dev moves fast. However, the girl had high sensitivity. So, it’s not easy to make a diversion. Nania is not an ordinary woman with all her natural weaknesses. She is a girl who has supernatural powers. Just like her.
“Stop!” Dev is deafening knowing Nania is trying to catch up.
“Tsk! Where is this?” Dev just realized that she was trapped in a cold dark room.
While she couldn’t find a way out, Nania’s steps brought them closer. Something exploded in Dev’s chest as Nania got closer. Circumstances demand Dev to surrender.
“Who are you? What are you doing here?”
“Hey!”
Because Dev doesn’t answer, Nania’s curiosity is crushed even more. Slowly tiptoeing, Nania looked closer and grabbed Dev’s shoulder. Her eyes traced all parts of Dev’s body.
“Are you Devada?” She asked knowing she recognized Dev’s clothes.
“Or Elfara?” Nania continued which instantly made Dev’s eyes widen and it looks like the girl discovered something strange that Dev was hiding.
“Y–”
“Nania!” A voice from outside called out to her. The girl who likes to wear thick robes, swallowed back the words she wanted to say.
“Nania, where are you? Hurry up to the first floor, big trouble is happening!” It was Elios’ voice from the speakers installed in corridor two.
With a heavy, Nania immediately left the cold room. Luckily, it turned out to be on Dev’s side. Part of her body that was shaped like a monster gradually recovered to its normal state. She immediately went out to find another way.
In Elios’ office, Nania seemed to be walking tensely towards Elios who was busy with his cellphone screen. The girl waited with a long sigh.
“Nania!”
“Yes, what is up?”
“Something happened to Devada.” Elios explained.
“What do you mean?”
“I found the girl not in the bedroom. Look at this!” Nania was surprised to see how messy the room Dev occupied was on the CCTV footage shown by Elios.
“That kid is always causing trouble!”
“Wait! I saw someone wearing clothes like Elfara’s in the cold room. From her posture, I doubted it was really Elfara.”
“Is she wearing a turtleneck and jeans?” Elios asked.
“Yes but ….”
“There’s no mistaking it, she must be Devada!”
“Devada? Could it be?”
“Why do you doubt it?”
“Elios, I saw the unnatural part of her hand.”
“It means?” Elios furrowed his brows.
“Like a beast with sharp claws.” Elios smiled lopsidedly. It made Nania’s expression look offended.
“Nania, stop imagining! You know, we’re in a really serious position.”
“Since when did I like to joke around? I know, ever since you got to know Elfara, we’re no longer friends like we used to be, but, that doesn’t mean I’m being dreamer!”
“Don’t bring other people into every problem, Nania!”
“Listen! I’ll make sure Devada is okay. I don’t care about you!” Nania sulked.
“Don’t act like a child, Nania!”
“Nania! Nania!” Elios’ exclamation was ignored even though the young man continued to walk behind Nania.
“Nania, de–” Elios’ words hung as their pace stopped. The two figures who were fighting with each other were fixated on what was in front of them.
“What happened?” Dev’s voice makes them look at each other.
“What happened?” Dev repeats her question.
“Devada? Are you all right?” asked Nania. The look in her eyes constantly circled Dev’s entire body.
“I’m well.” Dev’s reply suddenly made Nania turn her gaze back to Elios.
“You’re hurt! What happened to you?” Elios suddenly spoke. He approaches Dev and looks at her with concern.
“I’m fine. Just a little injury. I walked carelessly.”
“Don’t hide anything from me, Deva! You are in my house. I have a responsibility for your safety. I saw everything.”
“Seeing what, Elios?”
“Come on!” Reflexively, Elios took Dev’s hand.
Followed by Nania, the young man takes them to the room where Dev rests. Until there, they were silent a thousand languages. A while ago, Dev had cleaned up all the mess there. Regarding the broken glass interior, she managed to fix it with magic.
“This is unbelievable!” Elios said while smiling a disbelieving smile.
Elios looked back at the recording connected to his cell phone. The tape can’t be engineered. Two different facts confused Elios’ head.
“Where have you been, Dev?” Nania, who had been listening for a long time, finally asked a question.
“Looking for you!” Dev replies origin. She realized that Nania was not that easy to be fooled.
“Elios, we already know, Devada is fine. Get some rest. I’ll take care of it.” Honestly, there are a lot of question marks that need to be answered immediately. However, after looking at the clock on his cellphone, he agreed to Nania’s request.
“Okay. Nania, you should rest too. I’ll leave Devada to you. Call me no matter what.” Nania rolled her eyes. There were some words she didn’t like.
“Hmm!” She said curtly before Elios actually got off his feet.
Seeing the way Nania looks at Dev, she knows her position is not safe. Nania’s deer eyes then looked more closely at all corners of the room, then the girl dropped the weight on the edge of the bed.
“Dev, you want to say it yourself, or I’ll find out.” Nania gives a choice which makes Dev’s forehead crease.
“Erm!”
“You don’t have to go to the trouble of making excuses. Maybe you can trick Elios, but not me. By the way, you’re lacking in talent at repairing broken things.” Dev glanced at the flower vase that Nania had just grabbed from the nightstand. One press with the index finger, the item made of glass splits and scatters on the floor. Dev just stares at the blue flakes with a straight face.
