The night had passed. The hospital had restored normal order when it was dawn.
Marina drank too much coffee, and it hurt her stomach. Her face contorted in pain. Ryder insisted on sending her home to rest.
“You’re the only one left in the White family. You have to take care of yourself.”
Ryder looked at his watch. It was eight in the morning.
The hospital that Shawn was in was the closest to the car accident but not the best in City J.
“Shawn can’t be moved with his current situation. So, we have to find a way to purchase a batch of advanced equipment.”
Norton rubbed his hair that looked like a bird’s nest and yawned as he came out from the ward.
“Dr. Paker, how’s my brother?”
Marina knew little about Norton’s capabilities, but according to the book, Norton was a big shot in medical science.
“He’s still alive.”
Norton said mysteriously and touched the stubble on his chin. Ryder shot him a warning look. Norton said in injured tones, “Don’t worry, he will survive.”
“Men are all like this, choosing the women over their friends. There are so many women in the world, but I am Ryder’s only good friend. Shouldn’t I be more important than this woman?” Norton thought.
Norton turned around awkwardly, not wanting to see the lovey-dovey couple.
Marina didn’t care about the tone in Norton’s voice. She didn’t need to be comforted right now. Instead, the words of Norton made her feel at ease.
“It’s too late to purchase and transport the equipment. Why don’t we borrow a set from Mr. William’s private hospital?”
Ryder could handle all these trivial matters alone, so he asked Kenny to take Marina home. Marina could come back after she took a good rest.
Shawn was in a coma. There was nothing they could do there.
“I can go home myself. I’ll just take a taxi.”
It had already passed the peak morning hours in City J. Marina estimated the time and went downstairs.
However, Marina didn’t go home but went to the Duncan’s house.
Last night, Marina promised to video call her daughter, but she broke her promise.
To comfort Nicole, Marina bought a lot of delicate pastries and candies, as well as several toys.
“Mommy, you bad!”
Nicole saw Marina and her eyes turned red immediately. She waited all night to video chat with Marina.
Nicole thought Marina did not want her anymore and left her to Noemi.
“It’s mommy’s fault. So Mommy comes to apologize. Nicole, can you please forgive me?”
Marina shook the stuff in her hand and carefully admitted her mistake.
“Mommy, why didn’t you video call me last night? Don’t you like Nicole anymore?”
Nicole pouted. She had eaten a lot of vegetables. Jane also praised her for being a good child.
“That’s because your uncle is sick. Mommy went to the hospital to take care of him.”
Marina didn’t lie. She was anxious and couldn’t care about anything else at the time, so she forgot the promise she had made with her daughter.
“Is uncle better?”
As an understanding child, Nicole immediately forgave Marina and started to worry about her uncle Shawn; she liked her uncle.
“He is better now. That’s why Mommy came to see you.”
Marina kissed Nicole. Nicole blushed and said she would be good and that Marina needed not to worry about her.
“Don’t worry, leave Nicole to me.”
Marina told Jane that Marina needed to borrow medical instruments from the Duncans. Jane pulled Marina to the living room and asked the maid to serve the herb tea.
“You look like hell. Even your lips are pale.”
Jane was a bit worried. She also had a hard time back then, but she had managed to make it through. Now, Jane had her children and her days were great. She wouldn’t ask for anything else.
Families were important, but people had to take care of themselves first.
“Can I ask the maid to cook something for me?”
Marina blushed. She had not eaten breakfast yet, and she was so hungry that she couldn’t even carry on a conversation.
“I don’t know what you like, so I had let the maid prepare all sorts of meals.”
Jane could tell that Marina was hungry. She asked Marina to rest for a while and eat later.
The food was quite good. Jane chose the pasta and did not touch the steak.
“You have the same taste as me. I don’t really like steaks. I always feel they are too greasy and not enough to feed the appetite.”
After the meal, Jane insisted on letting Marina rest in the guest room. Marina refused. She had a problem sleeping in a strange place.
“Alright. We are the same on this, again!”
Jane and Marina had many similar habits. Jane would have suspected that Marina was her long-lost sister if Jane didn’t know any better.
After leaving the Duncan’s house, Marina went straight to the mall. She didn’t bring many clothes. Marina only planned to stay in City J for a few days, but now she had no idea when she would return.
After choosing a few comfortable pajamas, Marina turned her head and bumped into a man.
“Sorry, sorry.”
Marina bowed her head to apologize and was about to leave, but the man grabbed her wrist.
Marina looked up and was immediately stunned.
The man in front of Marina was extremely handsome. There was a glimmer of a smile in his eyes, but it was rather a cold smile than a warm smile.
The man’s face was similar to Ryder’s, but Ryder always seemed cold, and the person in front of Marina was not.
“What? An acquaintance, again? No way. This is City J, not Jin City.
The man is wearing a handmade suit. He doesn’t look like he needs money.” Marina thought to himself.
“I haven’t seen you for a few years. Don’t you recognize me, Marina?”
The man smiled, but the smile didn’t touch his eyes. “Or do you want me to call you Mrs. Langdon or aunt?”
Aunt?
It was a bolt out of the blue to Marina. She froze for a moment before something came up to her.
The original plot in the book did mention the details. It only said that the female lead made a mistake and slept with Ryder. She got married to Ryder because of Nicole, but the female lead’s original target was the son of Ryder’s elder brother, Mark Langdon!
“Oh my god, this man was rarely mentioned in the book. I remembered he was sick and passed away. Why is he…” Marina thought.
“You remember me now? I thought you would pretend you don’t know me.”
Mark kept a decent smile. His smile made some women stop and look at him. Some brave girls blushed and wanted to strike up a conversation with Mark, thinking he was a celebrity.
“Why are you in City J?”
Marina said dryly. Mark would indeed be the first on the list of people Marina would like to sleep with.
Although Ryder and Mark were uncle and nephew, they were similar in age.
A man in his thirties was the most charming.
“What? You want to know?”
Mark lowered his head, and a mocking smile hovered on his lips.
In Mark’s previous life, he died for some unknown reason. After his death, his resentment lingered for a long time and thus wandered for many years.
Mark realized that the woman in front of him, Marina, originally wanted to plot against him but was caught by Ryder. Ryder and Marina could not get along with each other. Ryder was quite ruthless. He destroyed the White family because of Marina and made her die miserably on a deserted island.
