Mara’s POV
“Stop the car!!…stop the car!!” I yelled at the driver to stop the car when we were close to our destination.
“I don’t understand what you want, young girl.
First you asked me to drive fast and now you are asking me to stop when we aren’t where you want to be yet” the driver was frustrated and he kept on driving.
“If you don’t stop this car right now…I will raise an alarm and people will think you are kidnaping me so it’s better if you stop the car now!!” I shouted at the driver and he brought the car to a halt at once.
It was so fast that my head collided with the driver’s seat.
“I asked you to stop the car.. I didn’t ask you to k*ll us” I brought out my phone and dragged my bag
out of the car.
“Charlotte…. mom you have to come done now” they followed suit in confusion.
Please pick your phone Keren…I know I am late but please just pick up.
“You weren’t able to meet up my time…I am sorry, I have to leave, ” Keren said the moment she picked up the phone.
“There is a yellow taxi behind your car please look back…I am here and I will do anything you want” I was shaken.
She must have seen me through the car mirror because she stopped her car not like it was moving though she was caught up in the traffic.
“I can’t come down so you have to get in now” she instructed over the phone and I was about to walk towards her.
“Where do you think you are going? You haven’t paid me my money” the driver stopped me in my tracks.
I brought out some dollar notes from my pocket and handed them over to him. Normally I wait to take my change but this was too big of an issue for me to wait…I couldn’t even think properly.
I managed to cross the road and ran towards her car with my mum and sister.
“We are approaching a checkpoint…your mother has to drive the car” Keren spoke the moment we were seated.
“My mum…but my mum doesn’t know how to drive” I tried to protest but she gave me a stern look. I understood how Keren was a person of few words, she would rather tell you a full story with her eyes than a half one with her lips.
“Okay…mum take the wheel” I instructed my mum and thankfully Keren did the rest…she was able to instruct my mum on what to do.
Everything was going fine until we finally arrived at the checkpoint.
“Good day officer” my mum was panicking.
“If your mum doesn’t calm down…she is going to expose me and if anything happens trust me we are all going down” Keren whispered to me in some kind of threat.
“Are they your daughters?” The officer asked.
“Yes” my mum responded in quite a haste.
“Vacation?” The officer asked again.
“Huh?” My mum looked very confused.
“Mum, he is asking about our vacation,” Keren suddenly said.
“Yes…we are going for a short vacation…they insisted on going to meet their grandma” my mother stuttered.
Oh God please let this office believe everything she is saying even with her shaking.
“You may go” the officer instructed my mom to drive off.
When we were far enough, Keren took the wheel.
“Kiss this country goodbye because it might be a while before we come back here again” Keren smiles.
”but why?” I asked.
“Everything will be clear later Mara ” Keren said and I could only stare at my mum and sister who stared back at me.
A few months later
“Mum we don’t have to leave” Lakshmi was crying to her mom who had made them pack all their things.
“Lakshmi please don’t argue with me…your father is waiting for us in the car” her mother was getting angry with her.
“Mom but I really don’t want to go…I want to stay here and finish my school,” Lakshmi pleaded with her mother.
“If school is the issue then your father and I will send you to one of the best universities just not anyone in this country okay…we wouldn’t want to miss our flight so just be quick” her mother instructed and dashed out of the house with a few of her things.
She looked at Scott who only stared back at her with his luggage.
Lakshmi didn’t get a chance say goodbye to her friend Mia.
Would she ever be able to see her again?
“Hurry up!!” her mother yelled and snapped her out of her thoughts at the same time.
Lakshmi’s dad was finally found innocent after so many trials in court.
Emily’s dad was responsible for the whole thing…he had somehow managed to set her dad up making it look like he was into drugs meanwhile he was the drug Lord himself.
He didn’t have any honest means of income and he knew he would soon be caught so he pinned the blame on Lakshmi’s dad and tried to run away but he was apprehended, only then was Lakshmi’s dad released.
After going through so much from Scott going missing to him losing his senses and then her husband gets arrested for drug trafficking. She just couldn’t handle it…it was just too much for her.
She wanted to take her family back to her home country India, she was in search of peace but Lakshmi just didn’t want to go.
“Dad please explain things to mum” Lakshmi pleaded with her father as she kept on tugging his shirt and distracting him.
“STOP IT!!!… just stop it okay Lakshmi this is for your best interest not just yours but everyone else’s as well.
You have become so spoilt that you don’t listen to your parents. We are leaving the country whether you like it or not” her mother silenced her at once.
“Lakshmi we just have to do what she says. Moving would be tough but it might just be what we need” Scott tried his best to calm her down when he noticed that she was frowning.
Frowning was an understatement…she was holding back her tears. She looked like she would burst any moment.
