“Thief! Thief! Someone catch that little brat! She is a thief!” A fair, tall and slender lady with ebony hair kept on screaming for help as she ran after a teenage girl who kept on running without looking back.
The girl was running so fast it was quite difficult for any one to see her face, one would only get a glimpse and that would be all. Caleb also got a glimpse of the girl as she ran past him like the wind, his jaw nearly dropped to the floor.
He couldn’t believe what he had just seen, was his eyes deceiving him or what?.
Meanwhile, the girl had ran so far that she had managed to lose the lady in the crowd, the girl was breathing so heavily and she finally stopped to check if the money she had seen the lady put in her purse was still intact.
“Nice job, you have managed to catch a goldfish today” a lady startled the girl with her voice. She was so frightened that she dropped the purse along with the money. The lady smirked and bent down to pick up the money and the purse.
She gathered the money and gave it to the girl without taking even a single dime out of it. The girl was too scared to even take the money. She just looked at the lady who was so damn hot.
She was putting on a black and red plaid blazer set with a short skirt and her leather knee high heels just complimented her outfit.
“You don’t have to worry darling, in this case I am on your side” the lady was soft spoken and she was still holding the purse.
Some policemen had overheard the other lady’s cry for help and they were running towards where the girl was. The lady in plaid quickly got the girl in her car while the officer ran past her.
She got into the car with the girl who wanted to make her way out but she couldn’t.
“Are you trying to kidnap me? Let me just advice you not to because there is no ransom” the teenage girl asked the lady and at the same time discouraged her.
The lady just smiled and touched the girl’s chin.
“Of course I don’t want to kidnap you. Look I have a deal for you but first what is your name?” The lady seemed to be very curious about this teenage girl.
“My name is none of your business and I dont want anything to do with you now please open the damn car so I can get outta here” the girl lacked any atom of respect towards the lady and that only made her happier as the smile on her face just refused to fade.
“Are you a child trafficker?” The teenage girl asked again when she noticed that her behavior wasn’t infuriating the lady even in the slightest.
“I am not a child trafficker but you are right about something. I am a trafficker but I don’t deal with children” the lady rested her hand on the driving wheel.
“I’m Keren and you?” This strange lady was offering a handshake to the teenage girl who paused for a moment before accepting the handshake.
“I’m Mara” she finally responded.
“Nice to meet you Mara” Keren was very pleased.
“I cannot say the same when I am trapped in your car against my will especially after you just introduced yourself as a trafficker ” Mara raised an eyebrow and looked out the window.
“What do you want from me?” Mara was very fierce and she just wanted this Keren lady to go straight to the point.
“I like your attitude and like you, I also love to hit the nail on the head. Here is the thing” Keren was beginning to make sense to Mara finally.
“I’m listening” Mara finally looked at her.
“I deal with other things, smuggling them in and out of the country and I would need your help to do that” Keren was blunt.
“Okay so what are these other things that you deal on?” Mara had begun to pick interest.
“You don’t have to know what they are. All I want you to do is help me deliver them in places that are within the country and I will pay you. Five hundred dollar per hour” Keren knew that she had gotten Mara’s attention.
“But what if the thing you are asking me to do is illegal? What happens if I get caught then?” Mara knew that this wasn’t just an ordinary delivery.
“Common, where is the bravery I saw in you earlier when you had carefully monitored that lady before you finally made a move and was able to snatch her purse and get away with it.
You are a very smart girl, I can really use somebody like you and besides you do not have to worry yourself about a thing. If anything happens then I will take the fall.” Keren was motivating and at the same time convincing Mara to work for her.
“Here is my phone number, you can call me when you get to your house by then you must have thought about it and I will give you a location we can meet up later where you will pick up the package” Keren handed Mara a piece of paper.
“Ma’am, if you are so smart then you should know that I cannot afford a phone so how then will I call you when I don’t have a phone?” Mara couldn’t care less if the lady was bothered by her rude attitude or not.
“You know you don’t always have to be so rude. You will meet me here by 3pm tomorrow before then I would have arranged for a phone call for you, it is very important” Keren instructed her and Mara nodded her head in agreement before Karen finally opened the door for Mara to go.
Mara’s POV
I went back to the slum which I, my mother and sister addressed as our home. Each time I would return to this horrible place I will feel disgusted and felt like I didn’t deserve this, I always felt like I deserved something better.
“You are back so early?” My mum welcomed me as I dropped my school bag at the entrance of the house so I could pull my shoes off. My mum didn’t know that I didn’t even go to school in the first place.
My mum never wanted me to attend a public school, I don’t know how she managed to do it but she got me enrolled into a private school.
“Yes mum” I went over to kiss my little sister on her forehead. Ever since my father died, things haven’t been the same for us. Even if we weren’t living our best lives back then when he was alive, it is still better than the hell we found ourselves in.
“I hope you learnt a lot? Because your sister and I are counting on you” My mum kept on asking me and it took all the strength in me to hold back my tears.
I was fighting the urge to cry because I couldn’t get myself to confess to my mum that I had been chased from school for over two weeks now and I had been looking for ways to earn some money to pay my school fees.
I had never stolen before. I was just left with no other choice than to do it.
