Jax drops Emily’s luggage by the bedside and sits beside her, he notices how red and swollen her eyes are. He feels concerned about what could be going on with her.
“Emily, are you okay?” Jax asks her.
She shakes her head and wipes her eyes, “Louis rejected me.”
Jax gasps, “Why?”
Emily explains everything to him. What hurts her most is the fact that Louis had reassured her that he would choose her as his Luna, he made a promise that he didn’t keep. She had to watch as another woman came in and took her place.
“How could Louis be so stupid enough to choose a total stranger over you? He has breached the Alpha’s code, I am going to pay him a tribulation…”
Emily holds Jax back, “Please don’t. I have already had enough trouble for this week, I don’t need any more drama with him or anyone else.”
She stood up and moved to the window, a comforting smile on her face. A lot of emotions are surging through her, but she has to keep it strong and avoid overthinking herself. She has made up her mind to forget about Louis and his heartbreaking words to her, she has to forget the fake promise she had stupidly hung onto and it got her hurt. She has grasped to his every word and memory so much that she did not see the blow coming. Looking at Jax, she flashes him a reassuring smile so he’ll understand that she has moved on.
“I will be fine, Jax. All I have to do is focus on working myself out and doing things that will make me happy, Louis is a sad past and I have learnt to acknowledge the outcome of things.
“If you say so, Em. If you need anything else, just know that I’m always here for you,” Jax assures me.
He gets up and leaves her to her thoughts, she lies on the bed while fighting hard not to think about Louis or what he might be doing now. Unstoppable tears stream down her face, she wipes them with the back of her hand.
Unpacking her bags, she brings out some of her throwback pictures with Louis. More tears spill down her cheeks when she comes across the picture when she was engaged, her happy smile then with no idea how things will end up. Her stomach growls and Emily rubs her belly, she has to eat no matter how sad she is feeling right now.
Coming out of her room, she sees a dark figure that she has been looking forward to seeing.
“Conrad!” she yells with excitement.
Conrad turns with a smile on his face, surprised to see Emily coming out of her room soon – although he has longed to see her face and even have an audience with her.
“Emily! What brings you out here?”Conrad asks.
Her stomach grumbles loudly, automatically replying to his question. Conrad chuckles and leads her to the kitchen.
“The servants have retired because there is no more work to be done,” Conrad says.
Emily’s mouth drops open, “How am I going to eat now? I can’t cook.”
Conrad chuckles again, he pulls out a pan and lights up the cylinder.
“I’ll have to cook for you, but I will be open for special cooking classes that is if you are interested,” He grins and sets to work while Emily stands at the door.
She watches as his muscles reflect naturally, and his forehead becomes sticky. I shake whatever crazy thought that is about to creep into my mind, Conrad is Jax’s beta and best friend too.
Soon after, he serves her a hot meal of meat casserole and places it on the table where she is sitting. Emily takes a bit and her eyes widen more.
“It’s delicious, Conrad. I must admit that I’m going to apply for one of your specials,” She praises him,
He sits and watches her as she enjoys her meal with a smile on her face. Although he is tempted to grab her face and kiss her lips, Conrad sighs and looks away from her, the charming aura she emits makes him feel butterflies in his stomach. Conrad knows that he is in love with Emily, he has always been but never dared to speak up to her.
“If I may ask, what brought you back here? ” Conrad raises a question.
Emily sighs. Revisiting her closed past is something she is not willing to do, even though Conrad is Jax’s beta and his best friend. It has not come to the extent for her to feel secure around him and open up. She waves off a smile, covering up the pain that stung her heart.
“I just feel like taking a break here, that’s all.”
“I thought you were engaged to Louis, soon to be his Luna. Is he aware that you are here?” Conrad asks, he has noticed her swollen eyes and is thinking that Louis might be somehow connected to it.
“Yes, he’s aware,” she replies hurriedly and pretends to focus on finishing her meal.
Conrad senses that Emily is not willing to open up to him, and he does not want to force her to say anything if she does not want to. He smiles back at her and excuses himself to leave. He picks up his rifle, ready to hunt for another game.
A sudden anger surges through him, something must have transpired between Louis and Emily. Whatever it is must have hurt her a lot, he is not the type to poke his nose into other people’s business but since Emily is his friend, he is willing to do anything to get to the bottom of the matter.
An antelope comes into sight. Fortunately, it is not with a child. Conrad places his riffle in position to shoot when a female voice cuts him off.
“Don’t shoot yet, you’ll miss your target.”
Conrad turns around, and his eyes meet the teenage girl he saw at the training ground earlier today.
“What are you doing here?”
“Your prey is still alert around her surroundings,” she replies instead.
Conrad says nothing more than to turn around and focus on his game.
“It is less concerned now, you can go ahead and shoot it down.”
Conrad shoots the antelope down instantly, his game falls flat to the ground. He turns his head to thank the girl only to find out that she is gone.
