Chapter Ninety
“Sir, is there anything you’d want me to do about the mail?” Austin was asking Alex.
“No, forget it. I’ll handle it.”
“Alright, Sir.”
“Austin, you can do something for me. How about you check out where that came from and keep me updated on the person?”
“Yes Sir. I’ll do just that.”
Alex knew if he wanted to see Fiona, he’d have to do it at the right time. He needed someone out there so he’d show up at the right time when it would be easier for him to explain all that happened and quickly.
He has not been himself since the mail, it was better to live without hearing from her.
But now that she reached out, especially since she was carrying their child, it’s not something you just get over. It requires responsibility, it was like everything he touched reminded him of it and her. All the memories he had put to rest were back, hunting him.
“Sir, Miss William is here to see you. I told her you were unavailable, but she insisted on seeing you,” Austin, frustrated, was saying to Alex.
“I don’t know any Miss William and certainly don’t want to. Whatever she wants, it’s not today. Give her some excuse, I’m in a meeting or something or anything. Austin, it’s one of the things I pay you to do. Anything on Fiona?”
“My informant has told me she does seem pregnant and lives with her friends. She also seems to have a man who might just be her boyfriend. They work together.”
“Fiona has a man?”
“That I’m not sure of, Sir. I’m being told he’s always around her.”
“Find out, Austin, find out.”
“It is done,”
“One more thing Austin, let’s keep the main thing between us heh. Until I sort this out.”
“It will remain between us, Sir. Excuse me,” Austin has worked with Alex for a long time and has never seen his boss so unsure and nervous or anything.
His boss must like this Fiona, if only his boss would talk to him sometimes and not just see him as an employee, maybe he could help him.
“I didn’t order this,” visibly pissed at the waiter Alex wondered why waiters never take their job seriously.
“Oh, a beautiful young lady over there did, Sir.”
Alex had turned to check out who it was, no doubt the waiter was right but why buy him a drink?
And how did she know his favorite drink? Ah don’t think, she must have asked the waiter.
He muttered a thank you cos she was sitting 2 tables away and she’d sent him a kiss-in-the-air as a response. The lady sure knew how to flirt.
Today, Alex woke up with an urge to write to Fiona, to try to explain what happened, maybe get her to understand and forgive him.
He begins to write:
“I was your Peter Pan; you were my Wendy. You’d come to me and take me to places I’ve never been.
New heights, new ecstasies. New sounds coming out of your lips. New arches your body would make. We were wild and raw with abandon.
Time stood still when we were together. But I wouldn’t stay. I just liked those fleeting moments.
I never grew up. I was just a lost boy who couldn’t be tied down to anyone or anything. So, I left you to the wind, kissed you goodbye, and smiled.
You made a beautiful mistake. But you taught me what I needed. And you moved on with Captain Hook, as I am still stuck in tree houses.”
And then it hit him, what he was doing wouldn’t change. He knew Fiona too well to just “waltz” back into her life as if nothing happened.
She’s moved on, someone better perhaps someone who wouldn’t leave. She deserved it, she deserved to be happy, she deserved the best, she didn’t deserve what he did to her, and he certainly knew he was no good for her.
Coming back would ruin everything, maybe he should wait until their child is born. Who knows, that might soften her.
But he would wait and see what fate had in store for him. For now, he would watch from a distance.
“Sir, we have found out more about this Ernest lady,” said Austin in Alex’s office.
“Please, go on. I’m all ears.”
“Seems her friends are trying to get her married.”
“Really? Already?”
“Yes, Sir. And that is not all, it seems she is expecting twins.”
“Are you sure about this?
“My sources do not lie, Sir.”
“You can go, thank you.”
Alex was stupefied, here he was finding it difficult to get through a day, and what more? Twins? He didn’t know if he was to be excited or sad.
He wanted to be with her this very minute, hug her, tell her it was going to be okay, that they would get through this together, no matter what it cost.
He was willing to sacrifice anything, whatever it was to be close to her at this moment. That is what he should do, that is what is expected of a gentleman.
“Sir, there has not been much complaint mail from admirers. They seemed to have stopped coming,” Austin, looking worried, said to Alex.
“Well, Austin that is a good thing, is it not?”
“Maybe but you see, I asked someone to look at it and I have been told there is a woman out there claiming that you two are lovers and having been threatening other women to steer clear of you.”
“Austin, this is not the time to be bothered about such things. If anything, I should thank the lady in question. It has helped make your work easier, you don’t get to read silly emails anymore. The only thing I have asked you to do is keep an eye on that Fiona lady for me.”
“Whatever you say, Sir,” Austin excused himself.
“That woman must have guts doing that,” Alex said to himself wondering who that woman could be. He noticed it too, fewer and fewer women flocked around him.
“Austin, push all of my schedules for next week to this week,” Alex said to Austin.
“Alright, Sir. Is everything okay?”
“Yes. Actually, no. You know the mail from Fiona, we are leaving, to go find her. Round up everything here.”
“When do we leave, Sir?”
“I will let you know. Remember, this is just between us and should remain that way. I thought I should let you know and not take you by surprise. We just need to finish up the business here.”
“I will make sure of that.”
“Austin, do you think I am doing the right thing?”
“Erm Sir, if she is pregnant and she indeed carries your child, then it is the only right thing to do.”
