Chapter 129

“Sir, this is the file that needs to be signed. The rest, I’ve already sent as per your previous instructions.”
Darwin nodded and accepted the documents handed over by his secretary. He took a moment to read them and then proceeded to put his signature in several designated columns. He wasn’t sure how many documents he had already signed.
“Also, after this, please check if Leighton’s monthly documents have been responded to or not. I’m curious about the performance evaluation they will send.”
The secretary nodded in understanding. As she took the signed documents from Darwin, she responded to her boss.
“I’ll check right away, sir. I’ll inform you as soon as I have an update.”
Darwin nodded again and allowed his secretary to continue her work. Once she left, Darwin checked his watch, which was wrapped around his wrist. It was already past four in the afternoon. He thought about contacting Veronica, just to know her whereabouts. Whether she had already come home or was still busy with Luna.
However, when he tried to contact her, Veronica didn’t respond at all. She ignored three of his phone calls. This wasn’t typical behavior for Veronica. But Darwin didn’t sense anything strange or have any bad feelings about her well-being.
Continuing with his work for the remaining two hours, Darwin’s phone suddenly rang. He thought it might be Veronica returning his call. Without thinking much, Darwin answered the call.
“Yes, Luna, what’s up?” he asked calmly.
“Win, you need to go to the hospital right now,” Luna said on the other end with a tone of panic.
Darwin’s brow furrowed. He wondered why Luna was suddenly asking him to go to the hospital.
“To the hospital? What’s happened?”
“Veronica suddenly fell, and earlier she experienced bleeding. She’s at the hospital now. So, you need to come here right away!”
Darwin was shocked by Luna’s sudden call and the surprising news. Without further ado, he took immediate steps to join his wife at the mentioned hospital.
Fifteen minutes later, Darwin finally arrived at the hospital. He rushed to where Luna was anxiously pacing in front of the Emergency Room. At the same time, he noticed Kennedy’s presence. Perhaps Luna had contacted her and asked her to come to the hospital as well.
“Luna, where’s Veronica? How is she doing? Why did she end up in the hospital like this?”
Darwin bombarded Luna with numerous questions. Anyone would panic and worry upon hearing that their previously healthy wife was suddenly in the hospital, diagnosed with a serious condition.
“I’m not exactly sure how it all started. What I do know is that, just before we came home and while passing through the mall’s lobby, Veronica suddenly slipped. Initially, she seemed fine, but a few minutes later, there was a lot of bleeding. That’s why I rushed her to the hospital, fearing the worst.”
Darwin let out a heavy sigh, closing his eyes briefly with mixed emotions. The initial concern had now escalated, worried that something terrible might happen to his wife and their unborn child.
“I’m truly sorry, Win,” Luna said with regret in her voice. Her eyes welled up with tears due to overwhelming guilt, even though it wasn’t her fault that Veronica was in this situation. “I apologize for not being careful enough with your wife.”
“Darling, this isn’t your fault,” Kennedy, standing next to Luna, reassured her. She tried to calm Luna’s feelings of guilt and remorse. “This is a tragedy, and we have to face it with patience and composure. I believe Veronica is okay inside.”
“Yeah, Luna,” Darwin replied afterward. “Please pray for Veronica to be okay. We’ll wait for the next update from the doctor.”
Ten minutes later, the doctor who was treating Veronica finally came out of the room. Darwin hurried over to inquire about his wife’s current condition.
“How’s my wife, doc?” Darwin asked with deep concern. He hoped nothing bad had happened to his wife.
“With a heavy heart, I must inform you that the patient’s condition is weak and unstable right now. There has been significant bleeding, which can be considered serious,” the doctor replied.
“Serious bleeding?” Darwin was once again taken aback, feeling as if a heavy weight had just crashed onto his chest. “What should I do, doctor? Please do something for my wife.”
“I hope you can remain calm,” the doctor requested. “In a little while, the patient will be transferred to the delivery room. Whether we like it or not, your wife will have to undergo a cesarean section surgery immediately. The rupture of the amniotic sac requires the baby inside her to be delivered urgently to prevent further complications. And also…” The doctor paused deliberately, taking a slow breath as if carefully choosing the words to convey to Darwin.
“And what else, doc? Please don’t make me more anxious and panicked,” Darwin pleaded, his frustration becoming more evident. He was growing increasingly afraid that something terrible might happen to Veronica.
“Please find a friend or relative with the same blood type as your wife’s, who is willing to donate blood at any time. Just as a precaution, in case the hospital’s blood supply is insufficient due to the severe bleeding your wife is experiencing.”
Darwin’s peripheral vision grew blurry. The anxiety that had been building up inside him was now overwhelming, causing his entire body to suddenly feel weak. He realized all too well that Veronica’s condition was currently far from good.
“I will do exactly as the doctor instructed. And please, doctor, whatever happens, I beg you to save my wife, no matter what.”
The doctor nodded, attempting to reassure the anxious and panicked Darwin.
“Don’t worry, sir. We will all do our best to provide assistance and medical care. Let’s all pray that the patient’s condition improves and returns to normal.”
The doctor then excused himself and, along with the nursing team, was seen taking Veronica out of the emergency room to transfer her to the delivery room.
Darwin immediately followed the doctor’s earlier instructions. He urgently contacted Randy to come to the hospital as he remembered that Veronica and his cousin had the same blood type.
Similarly, Kennedy also lent her assistance. She immediately called Bimo, her assistant, asking for his help in donating blood in case Veronica needed a significant amount.
“You need to stay calm, Win. I’m sure Veronica will be fine. We’re all praying that nothing bad happens to your wife and your baby.”
Kennedy gently rubbed Darwin’s back, providing support to ensure that her cousin didn’t fall apart in the face of the current situation. She believed that Darwin could navigate through all of this with a clear head and rational thinking.
“Thank you so much for your prayers, Ken. I truly wish for the best for my wife and our future child.”
“They will be fine. Now, you should contact your parents and my parents to inform them about what’s happening to Veronica. They deserve to know what’s going on with her right now.”
Darwin agreed and promptly contacted both sets of parents to share the news of what had happened to his wife.
