The plane that Vivian was on finally landed smoothly at Soekarno-Hatta Airport. After spending some time in Singapore accompanying her aunt for medical treatment, today Vivian was returning to Indonesia. There was one important thing that she felt she needed to take care of immediately.
As she exited the airport, Vivian first glanced at the watch on her wrist. Currently, in Jakarta, it was already four o’clock in the afternoon.
Not wanting to get stuck in rush hour traffic, Vivian hurriedly looked for a taxi. As soon as she found a vehicle to ride in, she immediately asked the driver to take her to a place that she needed to visit right away.
Luckily, the streets were still very empty. It took about forty minutes for the taxi she was in to enter a high-end residential complex in South Jakarta and stop at one of the houses she was heading to.
“Excuse me, is Mr. Darwin or Mrs. Veronica here?” Vivian asked the security guard on duty. Currently, she was visiting one of her former lover’s luxurious homes.
“Miss Vivian…” the security guard addressed her once he realized who the visitor was. Since she had been brought to Darwin’s house quite frequently in the past, some of the staff were familiar with Vivian, who had been Darwin’s girlfriend for several years.
“Mr. Darwin or Mrs. Veronica haven’t arrived home yet. Maybe they’ll be here shortly,” the security guard replied.
Vivian glanced at her wristwatch again, nodding as she realized that this was the time when Darwin usually left the office. Instead of her visit being in vain, she decided to wait for a while.
“In that case, can I wait inside? There’s something important I need to discuss with Mr. Darwin or Mrs. Veronica.”
The security guard appeared to ponder for a moment. Seeing the pleading expression on Vivian’s face, he eventually allowed her to enter.
“Please wait inside, Miss Vivian. Let me take you to the living room.”
Vivian nodded in agreement. After being invited into the house and seated in the living room, she chose to wait patiently for the homeowners to arrive.
Vivian had a reason for being at Darwin’s residence. Her visit to Indonesia today was specifically to meet her former boyfriend and his wife.
Fifteen minutes later, the sound of a car entering the driveway could be heard. Vivian was sure that it was the person she had been waiting for.
And indeed, within a minute, the man she had dated for several years walked in first, followed by Veronica. When Darwin turned towards her, he wore an expression of surprise. Vivian was certain that the fair-skinned man didn’t expect her to show up like this.
“Vivian…” Darwin greeted her with a puzzled expression.
Vivian promptly stood up, nodded politely to Darwin and Veronica, and responded to his previous remark, “I’m sorry if I’m interrupting your time.”
Darwin paused for a moment, scanning her with a discerning gaze, observing Vivian from head to toe. Shortly thereafter, a question arose in his mind: why had Vivian come to see him and why was she so daring as to come directly to his house? Was his former girlfriend back in Indonesia to cause trouble?
“Why are you suddenly here? What business do you have?” Darwin wondered, then gently pulled Veronica’s arm, inviting his wife to sit beside him.
Vivian displayed a thin smile on her face. She looked at Darwin and Veronica in turn, then responded to the question that had been posed to her just now, “Actually, I came to Indonesia to take care of something. But before I do that, I decided to stop by your house first because I need to meet Veronica in person.”
Darwin’s eyebrows furrowed suddenly. Of course, he was puzzled and curious about why Vivian wanted to meet his wife so urgently. Was there something important that she wanted to convey? Various assumptions began to emerge in his mind.
It could be that Vivian had something important to discuss with Veronica. It could also be that Vivian’s arrival this evening might become a challenge for the marriage Darwin was trying to rebuild with Veronica.
“Meet Veronica? For what purpose?” Darwin asked, growing even more puzzled.
Meanwhile, Veronica, who was sitting beside Darwin, reached out and tightly held his wrist. She turned her head, then shook it, signaling her husband to stay calm and not get emotional.
“Why, Vivian? Is there something you want to tell me?” Veronica finally spoke up, looking intently at Vivian.
“First of all, I want to apologize for what happened the other day. Maybe my meeting with Darwin caused some problems. But honestly, I didn’t have any ulterior motives. It’s just that I’ve been used to confiding and sharing even the smallest things with him, and now I don’t have anyone. That’s what made me anxious and confused, so I felt compelled to meet Darwin.”
Veronica nodded in understanding. She also felt a sense of pity for the woman in front of her. If she and Darwin hadn’t been arranged to marry, Vivian might have been the one standing by Darwin’s side. Undeniably, Veronica’s presence had disrupted the relationship they had built.
However, given that they were already officially married, Veronica was determined to fight for her marriage and draw Darwin’s attention back to their sacred marital vows.
“I’m truly sorry as well for not explaining yesterday. I had to rush to take Aunt Laura for treatment in Singapore,” the woman continued, providing a detailed explanation.
Veronica nodded again, trying to understand Vivian’s current situation. After all, everything had already happened, and her relationship with Darwin had improved significantly.
“It’s okay,” Veronica replied. “I’ve forgiven you. Despite the misunderstanding that occurred, Darwin and I are much better now. And you don’t need to feel uncomfortable anymore.”
Vivian smiled, casting her gaze back and forth between Veronica and Darwin. She let out a soft sigh and continued to speak.
“I also came here to say thank you.”
“Thank you?” Darwin repeated with a puzzled tone. “Thank you for what?”
“Thank you for the help you provided to Aunt Laura,” Vivian explained.
“Don’t mention it,” Veronica replied with a smile. “I just gave what you and your aunt rightfully deserved.”
Darwin, who was still puzzled by the conversation between Veronica and Vivian, looked even more bewildered. His previous curiosity hadn’t subsided, and now it grew stronger due to the discussion between his wife and his former girlfriend.
“What does this mean? What’s really going on?” he asked.
Vivian smiled and proceeded to explain, “As you know, the other day I decided to accompany Aunt Laura for medical treatment in Singapore after her accident. After all the examinations, surgery, and care, I found out that Veronica, your wife, had covered all the expenses. Everything, from the hospital costs to Aunt Laura’s full recovery, was taken care of by your wife.”
“Huh?”
“Yes, Win,” Vivian said again. “Initially, I was worried that the money I had wouldn’t be enough to cover all of Aunt Laura’s medical expenses. But when I went to handle the paperwork, the hospital informed me that all the costs had already been covered by your wife.”
Darwin was once again stunned. He had received yet another unexpected revelation. From this, Darwin could draw the conclusion that besides being able to ruin anyone she didn’t like, his wife was also capable of performing unexpected acts of kindness.
Meanwhile, Veronica just smiled. She responded to Vivian’s gratitude in a relaxed and calm manner.
“I hope you’re not offended by the help I provided. Honestly, I didn’t have any ulterior motives other than sincerely wanting to help.”
“Once again, thank you, Veronica. I don’t know how to repay your kindness and Darwin’s,” Vivian expressed her gratitude.
Veronica shook her head. The smile on her lips didn’t fade at all as she spoke again.
“Don’t worry about it. You don’t need to think about it too much. You don’t even have to feel obligated or troubled to find a way to repay it. I’m not asking for any compensation for the money I spent. Consider this as help from a friend.”
Darwin looked at Veronica with admiration. He never imagined that his wife could be so kind and generous, especially to a woman who had once hurt her.
“So, besides meeting Veronica, why did you suddenly come back to Indonesia?” Darwin asked.
“I came to collect some belongings and important documents from Aunt Laura’s house that I need to take to Singapore. And I also need to handle some permits and other matters,” Vivian explained.
“Are you and Aunt Laura planning to return to Indonesia?” Darwin inquired.
Vivian shook her head. It seemed that her decision to settle in Singapore was final and couldn’t be changed.
“It looks like we’ll be staying there for a while. Besides, I just got a good job in Singapore, and the contract is quite substantial,” Vivian shared.
Darwin nodded in understanding. He felt somewhat relieved that Vivian could start a new and decent life in Singapore.
“I’ll pray for you and Aunt Laura to be well there,” Darwin sincerely said.
“Thank you both again. I hope that after today’s explanation, there won’t be any more misunderstandings between the three of us.” Then Vivian directed her gaze specifically at Veronica, intending to have a serious conversation with his former lover’s wife. “And Veronica, once again, I apologize for everything that happened between us. I realize I was selfish for persisting in a relationship with Darwin, even though he was legally married to you. I hope you can find it in your heart to forgive my past mistakes. And thank you very much for the help and kindness you’ve shown to me and Aunt Laura.”
“You’re welcome,” Veronica replied. “I hope you understand that everything I’ve done was to protect my marriage. I also apologize if it seemed like I was trying to take Darwin away from you. I was only defending what was rightfully mine.”
Vivian nodded. With nothing more to discuss, she chose to say her goodbyes. She hoped that she could truly move on and find happiness in her new life.
Although it was initially difficult to forget Darwin so easily, she believed that the sincerity she had chosen would bring about good things in the future.
Darwin also did the same, offering his prayers for Vivian to find a better man than him. He hoped that his former lover would find happiness in her new life out there.
