Before truly enjoying her holiday and departure to South Korea with Darwin, Veronica appeared busy wrapping up remaining tasks. Since morning, the woman had been engrossed at her work desk.
From checking several important files, compiling signed deadline reports, to sorting out documents that had been approved and ready to be sent.
Sean, aware of Veronica’s busyness in her office, took the initiative to help. After lunchtime, he deliberately went down to the cafeteria to buy drinks and a cake for Veronica to snack on while finishing her work.
“Have the drink first. I also got you a red velvet slice to enjoy while going through the documents,” Sean offered, handing Veronica a bottled tea and a small box of red velvet cake he had bought.
Veronica looked up and simultaneously broke into a smile. She simply accepted the warm gesture Sean extended to her.
“You’re going through so much trouble. If you keep offering me food like this, I’ll end up eating instead of working.”
“It’s because if you get stressed working on deadlines, your stomach issues might act up. It’ll be even more troublesome since when it flares up, you might have difficulty eating for a week, right?”
This time, Veronica nodded while savoring the red velvet cake she held in her hand.
“Seems like you know me well,” Veronica remarked while taking another bite of the cake.
“Inside and out, Ve,” Sean responded while tidying up the documents. “There’s not a single thing about you that I’ve forgotten up to this point. Everything is neatly stored in my memory.”
“Exaggerating,” Veronica chuckled and then laughed freely.
“Anyway…” Sean continued when he was seated and had finished helping organize the documents. “Do you have any plans for the holiday tomorrow? I’m planning a small gathering and want to invite you, Deasy, and some of our colleagues to celebrate my birthday this year.”
Veronica blinked for a moment. Shortly after, her eyes widened in surprise.
“Oh my, God. Your birthday was just a few days ago?”
Sean nodded.
“Yes, Ve.”
“Wow, I’m so sorry. I completely forgot to give you my wishes.”
This time, Sean smiled. He understood completely how busy Veronica was to the point that she didn’t even offer the usual birthday wishes like in previous years.
Moreover, Sean was aware of how packed her schedule was and how much work needed to be done. Even he himself might have forgotten if it weren’t for Deasy’s reminder.
“It’s okay. I understand if you forgot. We’ve been really busy these past few days.”
“But instead of not saying anything, and since you’re here, let me wish you a belated birthday. May all the good wishes be granted. I hope all the dreams and aspirations that haven’t come true yet will be granted by the Lord.”
“Including the dream of marrying you?” Sean quickly added, causing Veronica to fall silent for a moment.
In fact, Veronica knew that Sean was above average in looks and physique. His career was also in a great place right now. He was considered stable. And even his age was quite appropriate for building a household. Veronica was also aware that many beautiful women had wanted to be his girlfriend or wife.
However, instead of seeking a new partner to replace her, for some reason, up to this point, Sean seemed content to be alone. He even openly declared that he was willing to wait as long as it took until he was separated from Darwin.
“Sean…” Veronica mumbled after a brief pause. “Why don’t you try finding another woman? I know you-”
“No, Ve,” Sean interrupted quickly. “You know who I love in this world, right? So, there’s no need to push me to change my heart. Besides, I’ve told you repeatedly, even for a decade, I’ll wait for you.”
“If it’s been a decade and I’m still not separated from Darwin, then what?” Veronica asked.
“Non-sense,” the man responded with a small laugh. “I know you don’t have any feelings for Darwin at all. And I’m confident that up to this moment, my place hasn’t been replaced in your heart.”
Veronica sighed deeply. She actually felt guilty for making Sean wait for her like this.
“I think we don’t need to discuss this further. I don’t want Darwin to suddenly show up and misunderstand.”
Sean agreed, understanding and respecting Veronica’s request.
“In that case, let’s go back to the original topic. How about my invitation, are you willing to come tomorrow?”
At that moment, Veronica smiled again. But shortly after, she shook her head.
“I’m really sorry, but I won’t be able to attend the party you’re hosting tomorrow.”
“Why? Do you have other plans?”
Veronica shook her head again. It seemed like she needed to explain to Sean the reason why she couldn’t attend his birthday party.
“Tonight, Darwin and I are leaving for South Korea.”
Sean was taken aback. A clear expression of curiosity was etched on his handsome face.
“South Korea? Are you and Darwin on a business trip or something?”
“It’s not related to work at all,” Veronica explained while shaking her head. “So, Darwin’s cousin invited us to South Korea for the holiday. That’s why I’m really sorry I won’t be able to attend your party tomorrow.”
Sean let out a long sigh. In his heart, he had really hoped Veronica would be able to make it to the event he had planned.
“From what I see, it seems like you’re starting to enjoy and feel comfortable with Darwin.”
Veronica chuckled and then let out a small laugh.
“Isn’t that how a husband and wife should be?”
“Don’t joke around, Veronica,” Sean murmured softly. Then in the next moment, his gaze shifted. “Or maybe, you’re starting-”
“Honey.”
Sean’s sentence was abruptly cut off as Darwin appeared at the door. He flashed a smile and continued, “Are you done with work? Shall we head home now?” he asked. Instead of entering the room, he chose to remain standing at the door.
Earlier, Darwin and Veronica had made plans to leave work early today. Besides wanting to bid farewell to Darius, they both decided to head to the airport early to avoid any rush.
“I’m done. Just wait a minute, I’ll tidy up my desk before we leave.”
“Take your time.”
While waiting, Darwin leaned against the doorframe, folding his arms in front of his chest. He observed Veronica, who was being assisted by Sean in organizing the scattered documents on her desk.
Once everything was in order, the woman with long hair quickly grabbed her sling bag from the buffet. Before approaching Darwin, she made sure to bid farewell to Sean.
“Thank you so much for your help, Mr. Sean. Enjoy your long weekend. I’ll take my leave now.”
“You’re welcome, Ms. Veronica. Enjoy your vacation too,” Sean replied politely before ushering Veronica to leave.
“We’ll head out first, Mr. Sean,” Darwin added warmly as Veronica stood by his side.
Then, without hesitation, he extended his hand, inviting his wife to hold it. They then walked lightly down the corridor, leaving Sean behind, still lost in thought outside Veronica’s room.
