The reporters rushed forward and the disorientating flashes continued to strobe onto Aubree. To Aubree, these flashes were like sharp knives slashing onto her!
Sidney sat in the car and his cold eyes looked out and onto her pale and terrified face.
That was someone he had adored for nine years…
And just like that…
He personally pushed her into the abyss…
“Uncle Sidney! Uncle Sidney… I beg you… please let me in…”
“I beg you…” Aubree cried as she yelled, begged, and continued to pound the window. She hoped that her Uncle Sidney would open the car door the very next second…
She hoped that her Uncle Sidney would save her…
Sidney looked on emotionlessly as he saw the reporters pushing and tugging Aubree, trying to get a frontal picture of her.
This was the path that he had chosen and he must not regret it.
“Uncle Sidney… why? Why?” Aubree saw and understood the coldness in Sidney’s eyes. She stopped begging and her heart sank.
Sidney had clearly seen her look of desperation and bewilderment but he remained emotionless. Sidney’s cold look slowly turned away and the car began to drive off.
“No…” Aubree followed behind the car, “Uncle Sidney… no…”
The car started to speed up and Aubree tripped and fell flat onto the ground!
“No… don’t…!” She was devastated and looked at Sidney’s car disappearing into the distance. Her scream was so loud that it touched the sky.
The scream ruthlessly pierced into Sidney’s heart and caused his stomach to churn! A cold tear rolled down from the corner of his eye. He lifted his hand and gently wiped it off.
In the Harris’ residence.
Riley’s mother was bored as she sat on the sofa. She was bored with the infomercials and was flipping the channels.
“Is Robert a perfect man or a conman? Is he a philanthropist or a wolf in sheep’s clothing? The mysterious character Sidney of the Hudson Group provided the evidence on the stage. Brought to you by TV station. On scene was Robert’s illegitimate daughter. Let’s have a look at how she looks like.”
On the television, the expression of the reporter was as if he had just found out a great secret and was eager to report to as many network channels as he could.
Mrs. Harris was not interested in these and changed the channel. But after changing several channels, each of them was reporting on the same news.
“Mom, why do you find this kind of news interesting?” Riley was holding onto Aubree’s handbag. She left it in his car yesterday. He tried to call Aubree but she didn’t answer and he was about to send it to her home.
Just as he was about to leave, Mrs. Harris called out to him. “Hey, wait …” Mrs. Harris was stunned as she stared at the television.
“What? I have something on!”
“Riley, come and have a look. Is the person on the television your friend, Aubree?” Mrs. Harris pointed to the television and increased the volume.
“Mom, you just saw her a few times, how would you remember…” Riley walked over and then his smile froze.
Aubree was laying on the ground and surrounded by a group of people. She was desperately trying to avoid the cameras. Riley’s expression darkened and immediately dashed out of the house.
“Are you trying to save the damsel in distress? Bring me!” Mrs. Harris tossed aside the chips, wore her shoes, and got into the car.
“Mom! Can you stay out of this? I’m not going there to play!” Riley looked helplessly at his nosy mother.
“Each sentence from you will delay you from saving that girl. Let’s go!” Mrs. Harris put on her seat belt with no intention to get out of the car.
Riley couldn’t wait for a second longer and drove quickly towards Aubree.
When he arrived at the scene. He saw that the people who gathered were far more than was reported just now. There were reporters and onlookers.
Robert had long escaped from that place, leaving Aubree alone on location.
Riley got out of the car and rushed towards the crowd. He removed his jacket and covered Aubree. He used his hand to cover Aubree’s face and brought her away from that danger zone.
He took her into his car and said, “Let’s get away from here.”
Aubree stared blankly and nodded. It was as if her heart had died and her face was expressionless.
“How pitiful…” Mrs. Harri ssaid compassionately. She couldn’t bear to see her in that pitiful state.
When they were home, Mrs. Harris instructed someone to clear out a guest room for Aubree. Riley wanted to keep Aubree company in the room but was glared at by his mother to leave the room.
In the room, Aubree sat weakly on the bed. Her hair was in a mess and covered her expressionless face. She was devastated, hopeless, speechless, and lost. Aubree never thought about the reason why Sidney adopted her. The moment when she realized the reason was the same moment that he pushed her into the abyss.
How could Uncle Sidney, who she loved and respected, be so cruel towards her?
They lived together for so many years and their memories were filled with joy and happiness. She had never doubted him and now it had resulted in this situation. Everyone can point at her and scold her for being the illegitimate child of a conman. Aubree didn’t care about the scolding and accusations but she cared about why Sidney treated her that way.
Aubree suddenly saw a fruit knife on the table. Her mind was blank and she felt totally numb. She picked up the knife and walked slowly to the bathroom. She turned on the shower and the cold water was like thousands of pins pricking on her body. She took the sharp knife and slashed her wrist and fresh blood began to flow with the water. The sudden pain reminded her that she was still alive. But from this moment on, she chose death.
“Mom, will anything happen to her with her in such a state?” Riley stood outside the door and was extremely worried.
“Let her cool down and we’ll have a look afterward.” Mrs. Harris was also worried but she felt that they should give Aubree some space at this moment.
“I heard from you that Sidney wasn’t this child’s uncle?” Mrs. Harris said when she remembered the reporter saying that those pieces of evidence were produced by Sidney.
“Yeah… that’s why I’m worried that something will happen. Aubree is very dependent on that Uncle Sidney.”
“How cruel he is to torment such a wonderful child. I wonder if she still has a home to go back to in the future.” Mrs. Harris shook her head several times.
Riley suddenly thought of something, “Mom, I still have something on!” He immediately went to his room and locked his door.
He took out his cell phone to make a call and anxiously wait for the other party to accept the call.
The call went through.
“Hendrix! Aubree is in trouble!” The first person who Riley wanted to inform was Hendrix. In these couple of years, he had shared all the information about Aubree with Hendrix. Hendrix normally asked Riley to organize their meetups at the bar or go to the race track.
The other side of the call was very noisy and Hendrix could not listen clearly, “What did you say?”
