Sophia’s POV
Kate stared at him in unabashed shock either from his quick entry or for his defence of me. I couldn’t tell which.
“Jerry, she-” Kate began to protest but Jerry didn’t let her finish, his tone gentle but firm.
“You are days from your delivery, you shouldn’t be doing anything strenuous,” Jerry said before turning to face me. “What are you doing here, Sophia?”
Kate’s lips parted no doubt to silence me before I could out her but I was already speaking.
“I just came here to inform your dear fiancee that if she wants to kill me, she’ll have to try a little harder,”
Ignoring the look of unadulterated shock on Jerry’s face I turned to look at Kate with a broad smile.
“Besides if you were so bothered about the secret of your child’s paternity coming to light maybe you shouldn’t have cheated on Jerry.”
Kate paled a visible tremor running through her and Jerry seemed to notice, his hold on her hand easing.
“What are you talking about, Sophia?” Jerry demanded.
Kate panicked trying to undermine me.
“Baby, don’t listen to her. She-”
“Is telling the truth?” I finished for Kate, a laugh leaving me involuntarily.
“You want to know what I’m talking about, Jerry? The baby Kate is carrying isn’t yours,”
Another rueful smile played across my lips as I looked from Jerry who was literally vibrating with anger and Kate who looked so shocked and pale that she blended right in with the whitewashed walls of the Baxter mansion.
“Both of you really deserve each other. Lying, cheating scumbags that you are. I really wish you both a happy married life in advance.”
With that I turned away from my past, my mission here was completed. I took a step then another away from them before turning back like I had forgotten to mention something.
“Oh and Kate, love?” I said, my voice dripping with sarcasm. “You might want to get your affairs together. The police will be doping by any moment now.”
Yeah, before coming here, I had given my testimony to the police. As well as a thorough account of what those men had said to me before trying to kill me.
They were going to arrest Kate the moment they got their warrant. I was just here to stir the pot before that happened.
Kate seemed to realise that and the rage in her eyes knew no bounds.
“You bitch-” She cursed charging at me no doubt intending to fight me, pregnancy or not, only for her to stop midstep to look down at her mostly damp dress.
Kate’s water just broke, she was about to enter labour.
I couldn’t hold in my laugh this time as I walked away.
Mr Prescott might not have had his revenge yet at least not on the scale he wanted to. But for me this was fine. For the first time since my divorce, I felt a sense of closure.
It was time for me to get back to my home and husband.
I was about to open the car door when I heard Jerry call out to me.
“Sophia!”
I paused turning to see Jerry pretty much running to come meet me. What the heck?
I was too startled to move and faster than I could blink, Jerry reached where I was and to my ultimate surprise, Jerry went on his knees, his hands folded in apology.
“I was wrong,” Jerry said, remorse evident in those baby blue eyes. “I shouldn’t have treated you the way I did.”
I was stunned. In the years I had known Jerry, this might be the first apology I had ever heard from him.
But Jerry wasn’t done yet.
“I was foolish, Sophia. I was immature. I blamed you for grandfather’s decision and I listened to the poison my mother and Kate poured down my ears,” Jerry reached for my hands as he concluded his apology. “I’m so damn sorry, Sophia.”
I stared at Jerry’s hands on mine. He was apologising. Taking the blame for his actions.
“Jerry,” I said meeting his gaze in response. “What is wrong with you?”
Jerry’s jaw dropped open in evident surprise and shock.
“What?” He asked.
Goodness, he didn’t even realize what he had just done.
“I didn’t come to your home with a shred of evidence but you believed my accusations over the words of the woman you were going to marry,” I said then I pointed at the Baxter Mansion behind him.
“Your fiancee is in labor right now but you are on your knees begging another woman you cheated on and humiliated to come back into your life.”
For a moment, I pitied Kate. This was the man she was prepared to kill to be with. What a waste of affection.
Jerry flushed at my words before he spoke.
“Sophia, you know that isn’t how it is-”
“Frankly, I don’t care how it is,” I said cutting him short. “For your apology, I accept it. However, you are no longer my concern, Jerry Baxter and I have no intention of ever getting back together with you.”
With that, I pulled out of Jerry’s grasp and reached for the door handle of the car but once more, Jerry moved fast catching my arm.
“Sophia,” Jerry said, his features more somber than I had ever seen them. “My brother isn’t as good as you want to believe.”
I looked at Jerry. This was the second time he was warning me about Mr Prescott and I was so done with it.
“I’ll see how good Reid is for myself. I don’t need your help to do that.”
With that, I slapped Jerry’s arm off me and got into the car instructing the driver to drive.
I was done with that chapter of my life.
