A Softie

Sophia’s POV
The doctor smeared the slightly cool gel around my lower abdomen before placing the probe on my belly which was only slightly distended like I’d had a very large meal.
As the doctor moved the probe, swishing blobs that further clarified appeared on the monitor and when she finally stopped moving the probe, I could see a blob that vaguely resembled the pictures of fetuses I had seen online and in TV dramas.
My heart seemed to expand in that second as I watched the monitor.
“Is that my baby?” I asked.
“Yes,” The doctor smiled. “Here you can see it’s heart,”
She moved the probe a bit as though to show me something else.
“And when you move here you can see- oh.” The doctor was saying only for her voice to cut off abruptly.
My grip on Mr Prescott’s hand tightened.
“What is it?” I asked, my growing fear evident in my voice. What did she see? Was there anything wrong with my baby?
The doctor focused the probe and I could barely believe my eyes even when she spoke.
“Congratulations, Mrs Prescott, you are having twins.”
“Twins?” I echoed, my eyes still glued to the monitor where I could see two blobs with strong heartbeats.
“Oh my God.” I exclaimed softly, tears wetting my cheeks for no reason in particular.
I turned to face Mr Prescott.
“Congratulations, Sophia.”
I let out a small laugh that might have been a cry then I hugged him and to my surprise, Mr Prescott hugged me back.
“Usually checkups for this stage of pregnancy are every four weeks but since you are having twins, you should drop in for consultation every two weeks. You can also call me whenever you have any questions or concerns.” Doctor Rayne said, handing me her card with a kind smile.
I took it returning her smile.
“Thank you.”
Next, she pulled out a couple of pamphlets handing one to Mr Prescott and another to me.
“Also we have some couple yoga exercises you might be interested in,” She said. “It holds twice a week and it can help you to keep in shape as well as build a stronger connection to your children. It’s not mandatory but you can definitely try it out.”
I looked at the pamphlet and the sudden realization that I had a lot to do to prepare for the arrival of my children hit me.
Mr Prescott seemed to notice I was feeling overwhelmed because he answered in my stead.
“Thank you, Doctor Rayne. We’ll talk about it and get back to you.”
She nodded.
“Of course, Mr Prescott.” Then she placed at me with that same kind smile. “I look forward to seeing you, Mrs Prescott.”
Immediately she left us, Mr Prescott faced me, that uncharacteristic look of concern on his face.
“How are you feeling?” He asked.
“I’m having twins,” I said with a small smile that wouldn’t stay on my face. “I didn’t know how I would take care of one but now I’m going to have two. I don’t think I can handle this.”
Mr Prescott cupped my cheek with his hand, his gray eyes serious and open.
“Look at me, Miss Evergreen. You are one of the strongest women I know, if anyone can do it, it’s you.”
“You need to stop saying things like that.” I said without hesitating.
Mr Prescott seemed confused. “Why?”
Because his words were only making impossible feelings grow inside me.
I shrugged.
“Because I might get used to you being a softie.” I said instead.
Mr Prescott’s hand slipped from my cheek, a small frown settling on his brow.
“I’m not a softie.” He clarified and the seriousness with which he said it made a laugh escape from my lips.
Mr Prescott watched me laugh expressionlessly then I noticed the sides of his lips twitch as though he was trying and failing to hold back a smile.
It wasn’t even a full smile but it made my heart race uncontrollably.
No, Sophia. You can’t do this.
I stopped laughing and cleared my throat.
“I need to change out of this.” I said indicating at the sheet still around my lower half.
Mr Prescott stood up so fast that his chair might have been on fire.
“I need to make a call.” He said then he was out of the room even faster than he had stood up making me stifle another laugh.
It only took me a few seconds to get the sheet off me and my dress back down but when I stepped out of the room, Mr Prescott wasn’t waiting outside.
Huh. He couldn’t have gone far. I opened my phone to give him a call but there was no reception.
Looking down at my phone I barely even noticed there was anyone in front of me until I bumped right into them.
“Sorry-” I began to apologise only to look up to see Jerry staring at me wide eyed.
“What are you doing here?” He asked.
Right this was the obstetric section of the hospital.
He must be here with Kate. What a coincidence.
“You don’t have any right to know anything about me.” I said trying to move past him but he moved with me blocking my way.
“Did you get my flowers?” He asked and I paused long enough to give him a glare.
“I threw them out,” I said evenly, trying and failing not to let my anger show. “Also don’t ever do that again. Have you forgotten I’m married to Reid?”
Jerry’s features hardened.
“You are really going to stay with him?”
I scoffed, unable to believe the audacity of this man.
“You are here for a checkup with your pregnant fiancee, I don’t think whether or not I decide to stay with my husband is your concern.”
Jerry gripped my ark hard and faster than I could blink, he pushed me up against the wall.
“Stop calling him your husband,” He growled in a low voice. “You were mine first.”
Really? This man was unbelievable and why the hell was this corridor desolate now?
“Oh don’t kid yourself. I was never yours,” I said in response to his claim. “Now let go of me or I will scream and your dear fiancee will catch you redhanded.”
Jerry’s baby blue eyes darkened with anger.
“I don’t care.”
Then he kissed me.
