Sophia’s Point of View
Kate’s eyes were wide as she took in the position Mr Prescott and I were in.
With Mr Prescott leaning over my chair, my hand on his forearm and our faces inches away from each other.
Mr Prescott straightened putting some space between us even though he didn’t take a step away from me.
A sigh of relief remained trapped in my chest as my heart began to steady once more. Thank goodness Kate had come when she had. She might just have stopped what could never be.
“Leave us.” Mr Prescott said gruffly, inclining his head and dismissing his flustered secretary who had obviously been trying to keep Kate at bay.
As Anne closed the door leaving the three of us alone in the office, Mr Prescott’s gaze moved to Kate.
“I don’t have an appointment with you, Kate.” He stated evenly.
He might have sounded cool and even conversational but the three of us knew what he really meant. It was a dismissal.
Kate’s smile tightened before she forced a laugh.
“Since when does family need appointments to see each other?”
I felt more than saw Mr Prescott stiffen at Kate’s words calling Jerry Mr Prescott’s brother. Instinctively I placed my hand over his that rested on the top of his desk.
The tension seemed to ease out of Mr Prescott at my touch and I didn’t know how to feel about that.
I glanced back at Kate and instantly knew from the glint in her eyes that she had caught the entire interaction.
Kate’s fake smile widened as she pulled out two envelopes.
“I came to personally drop off the wedding invite and Jerry wanted to say hello to his brother as well but he’s still getting the car-.”
Mr Prescott didn’t even look at the invites or even make a move to take them out of Kate’s hands before cutting her short.
“You should see yourself out now, Kate. My wife and I are otherwise occupied.”
A flush rose on Kate’s cheeks at Mr Prescott’s dismissal.
But as amusing as it would be to see her leave like this, I didn’t want her to think I needed Mr Prescott to fight my battles for me.
I tapped Mr Prescott’s hand lightly getting his attention.
“Dear, if you don’t mind,” I said, the word of endearment feeling almost weird as it came out. “I was hoping to speak to Kate alone.”
Mr Prescott’s gaze met mine and even though a single word didn’t leave his lips I knew he was checking to see if I was really fine with him leaving me alone with Kate.
Whatever he saw in my eyes must have convinced him because he nodded once.
“Alright then. I’ll be awaiting your summons.” He said with a teasing smile that made my stomach do flip flops especially when he leaned in and kissed my cheek.
When the door shut behind Mr Prescott, my cheek still tingled from the kiss despite the fact that I knew this was all an act.
How was I just realizing Mr Prescott and I had insane chemistry? If I had realized this earlier maybe I wouldn’t have signed that damn contract.
“You seem to be very comfortable with your new husband.” Kate said caustically, her eyes narrowing and her nose scrunching up with distaste.
I folded my arms quizzically in response.
“Is there any reason I shouldn’t be comfortable with my husband?”
Kate sputtered for a second as though she couldn’t believe I had dared to clap back at her. Then she recovered her momentum just as quickly.
“You are so shameless,” She retorted. “How can you just hop from one brother to the next?”
I scoffed loudly letting my gaze drop to her round protruding belly and linger there intently.
“I did it the same way you could get pregnant for my husband and reveal it at our wedding anniversary.”
Kate’s jaw dropped this time at my words and I calmly raised an eyebrow in response to that.
Surely she didn’t think she would just come to my husband’s company and talk down to me here. But knowing Kate, she could have actually thought that.
“How dare you try to judge me?! At least I am honest about who I am, you on the other hand pretend to be who you are not.” Kate retorted, at last, her face red with fury.
Seeing her so angry seemed to have the opposite effect on me.
I shrugged nonchalantly before responding dryly.
“Is that what you came all the way here to tell me, Kate?”
If glares could kill, I would have been six feet under from the intensity of Kate’s glare alone.
“I came here to remind you of your place,” She said finally and a small sick smile sat on her lips. “I know you are meeting Jerry secretly, but if you think I’ll let you come between my fiance and me, you have another thing coming.”
Meeting Jerry secretly? What was Kate talking about?
Oh. She must have found out about my meeting with Jerry at the hospital and misunderstood what had happened.
Misunderstood to the extent that she felt this meeting with me was necessary.
But Kate wasn’t nearly done yet. She moved closer to me, that smile still on her lips but daggers in her gaze and venom in her words.
“Men like Jerry will take sexual offers from women like you but that is all, Sophia. He will never keep you.”
