Sophia’s POV
One moment I was taunting Jerry.
Baiting him as he had done me, the next, he had pushed me flush against the wall, his body towering over mine, those baby blue eyes filled with so much anger that it was unreal.
“You don’t mean that.” Jerry said softly and it was almost a plea.
I didn’t want to analyze what emotion trembled in Jerry’s voice. No. It didn’t matter.
“But I do mean it,” I said, tipping my chin up so that he knew I wasn’t intimidated by this whole pushing me against the wall affair. “You can’t compare to my husband, Reid.”
Was I laying it on thick? Yes. Especially since I was on the verge of breaking things off with Reid Prescott and ending the damn contract. But seeing Jerry like this literally made my entire day.
Unchecked rage sparked in Jerry’s gaze and somehow I knew what he was about to do before he did it. Jerry Baxter slammed his mouth down on mine.
Or at least he would have if I hadn’t moved at the last moment so that the kiss landed on my cheek.
“Get your hands off my wife. Now.” Reid Prescott said walking into the room that very moment.
I went still in Jerry’s arms hoping that Reid Prescott wouldn’t misunderstand what was going on here.
But I shouldn’t have bothered because before Jerry even had the time to pull away from me and obey Mr Prescott’s instruction, he yanked Jerry off me.
Then grabbing on the lapels of Jerry’s suit, Mr Prescott pulled his hand back and delivered a mean left hook to Jerry’s face.
Jerry was so taken by surprise that he could only yelp as his nose gave way beneath Mr Prescott’s punch.
A gasp escaped me involuntarily. Well, that had escalated quickly. To my surprise, Mr Prescott was still drawing back his hand to give Jerry another punch.
But this time, I didn’t let it happen as I stood between both of them, my hands going out to hold Mr Prescott’s arm so the slap didn’t land.
“M- Reid, please stop.” I begged and it took a moment for Mr Prescott to drop his hand, his gaze focusing on me.
Then Mr Prescott let go of Jerry so that he staggered and almost dropped to the ground.
“Are you okay?” Mr Prescott asked and I could see the sincerity of his question belied in his eyes and I knew this wasn’t just fanservice because Jerry was here.
And somehow the knowledge of that made me feel… good.
I nodded once.
“Yeah, you don’t need to worry. I’m fine,” I let out a sigh from the wariness I felt deep within. “I just want to go home.”
To my surprise, Mr Prescott pulled me into a hug. Now this I knew was for the sake of Jerry. Over Reid Prescott’s shoulders, I could see Jerry watching this hug with eyes wide with surprise.
He didn’t want to believe the marriage between Reid Prescott and me was real.
Then Mr Prescott ended the hug and turned to look at Jerry, his hand on my waist almost possessively.
“Focus on your pregnant fiancee and forget about my wife, Baxter or you will be hearing from my lawyers.” Mr Prescott grunted then he escorted me out of Mom’s room.
As we reached the doorstep, Jerry called combatively.
“Sophia, you can’t trust him.”
Mr Prescott and I ignored him without even a backward glance.
Immediately we were inside Mr Prescott’s car, he flashed an almost playful smile, his eyebrow arching.
“So… you’ve wanted me from the moment you saw me?” He teased.
My mouth opened and shut and opened again as I flushed in embarrassment. Mr Prescott had heard that? I wanted the ground to open up and swallow me up for the next ten years.
I covered my face with my hands mumbling through my fingers.
“That never happened,” I groaned then realization hit me and I dropped my hands turning to face Mr Prescott. “Wait… you overheard that? Then why didn’t you come in sooner?”
Mr Prescott shrugged casually even if his words were anything but casual.
“I figured you could handle yourself without my interference. And you did.”
I felt warmed up by his compliment. Even I couldn’t believe I had stood up to Jerry like that without wavering.
“Thank you.” I said evenly and Mr Prescott smiled at me again.
This smile though was more solemn rather than the teasing one of before.
Then he asked me the question I had been dreading to answer.
“Have you come to a decision?”
About our contract. I knew even if he hadn’t finished his sentence.
I recalled Jerry’s words from earlier.
‘He’s just using you, you don’t know what Reid is like.’
I met the steady gray gaze of Mr Prescott.
“I want to trust you but I’m not sure if I can,” “I barely know you.”
“I will remedy it,” Mr Prescott said, taking my hands in his. “Just give me a chance.”
Sophia, you can’t trust him. Jerry’s last words echoed in my ears but I had no use for them staring into Reid Prescott’s gray eyes.
“I’ll give you a chance, Mr Prescott.”
